Geometry Wars - Galaxies

Post by redeyeguy_KIO »

Anyone here into the game? I own the Wii version, and I find it to be a very enjoyable game. I particularly like being able to see my scores posted on the online scoreboard, gives me a good reason to play more.

Too bad I don't own the DS version to unlock the final Galaxy, nor an extra Wiimote to experience the multiplayer modes. :(

I also like that the game includes Retro Evolved, which is also fun to play.

Excellent buy for $20 brand new!

have both wii and DS versions, both great.

Given i also have the XBLA gmaes too , i'd kill for a full hires version.

Yeah, nothing beats trying to rack up multipliers, plus using your best reflex and survival skills to keep the score going. Geometry Wars is definitely an endurance shmup.

I thought Retro Evolved 2 on XBLA is already HD? o_O

GW is so freaking trippy, though... I don't think it needs to be any better than it already is.

The Wii version is significantly better than the DS one IMO. I find the action slows to a crawl on some of the DS levels, and they actually become ridiculously easy as you can just sit in one spot and mow down the slowly spawning enemies.

I spent a lot of time with both versions though - great games and criminally overlooked.

That's an interesting bit of info. I was actually considering getting the DS version sometime (whenever I happen to buy a DS, lol) just to unlock Lameda; I heard it was an awesome Galaxy.

Are the multiplayer modes on the Wii version worth buying an extra Wiimote for? It sounds and looks tempting, but I'd rather ask someone else firsthand.

..and yeah, I noticed Geometry Wars isn't getting much love here. I guess everyone is here too much of a die-hard traditional shmup purist to bother with anything else. :(

I don't like the shitstorm of particle effects that's blocking your view all the time.
And the enemies more than often spawn directly in your way, making dodging those
bastards very hard. That's the reason why i don't enjoy the GWs.

I don't seem to find that to be the case; you can pretty much adjust and train your eyes to have very quick reflexes. And the particle effects blocking my view is bullshit x1000, I never had a problem with that EVER, lol.

Maybe it's another version of GW you're talking about, or you playing on a black and white TV, I dunno.. but at least from my gameplay experience, none of the things you mentioned seem to be an "issue" for me in Galaxies. I can deal with all that just fine, and simply call your complaints a sore rant more than anything else. :P

I was disappointed at the lack of GCN controller support, because with a PS adapter it would have been easy to get around the octagonal gating Nintendo favors.

GW:G's aiming is fully analog, but I'd have to abrade the Classic Controller's front panel to get any benefit.

I might do that, eventually; I know just the bit to use. But with my luck the compass points are real travel limits, and no good will come of this mod.

Hm, I find the Wiimote perfect for the game. I guess controller preference just depends on the individual.

Has ANYONE here tried the multiplayer modes? I am really wondering just how good they are.

IR-camera aiming with the Wii remote works very well. It is tiring, however.

For instance, that's the sole reason I won't be repurchasing Metroid Prime etc. when their Wiimade compilation is released.

Uh.. you serious, lol?

I used to work at a factory 5 days a week, 8 hours daily, stacking 52packs of beer 3 layers high. Coming home to play Wii after THAT is nothing, and probably more of a relief than anything else.

Maybe somebody needs excercise.

..just kidding, lol. I dunno, I just can't seem to imagine how playing with the Wiimote can tire someone out; I've played this game for hours on end without much problem. :?

Maybe you should use Wiimote more often, you'll probably gain some endurance for it after a while.

Excellent game - the Wii version can be picked up sealed for a fiver on Amazon.co.uk!!

I'm still torn between dual stick and the remote + nunchuk controls. I'm convinced the latter is superior but it takes you to keep at it. It's too easy to lose the aiming reticule. I switch between them depending on my mood. The classic controller has a nice solid feel.

I love the variety - particularly the Asteroids inspired levels.

You try playing a game holding your remote the same way many of us channel surf for hours on end and then come back to us.

I personally just lay the Wii Remote slightly on my lap (or next to me) and control it like a pseudo-yolk-based joystick. That's how it usually works when I'm playing games that emphasize more pointing than gestures like Cubello and Dr. Mario Virus Buster mode.

On the topic, I've only really played the DS version, and I sort of got a little bored of it afterwards (actually, not really; I just didn't feel like playing it anymore).

After playing the Wii version, which is outstanding fun, the DS one just looked too crap and controlled too awkwardly for me to be bothered. I didn't realize I need the DS version to unlock something. I guess I should have held on to it after all.

Yeah, the wii game is better. The DS controls work, but are less than ideal for the game & sometimes certain enemies are damn difficult to see on the screen due to a lack of sufficient contrast. That said, I think both versions suffer by not being focused enough. The variations are mostly good, but there was no need to spread out the 10-12 new ideas over 50 levels.

I played the Wii version a bit last year. If there's a Wii controller that doesn't have the octagonal fake choke, but instead a round one, go with that. Sliding the stick into one of the eight cardinal spots instead of going where I really wanted to was aggravating.
