I must concur...seriously, can a small, blurry player sprite and a handful of between-stage images completely and utterly distract one from the explosions and bullets and whatnot (y'know, the stuff that actually matters), or are some people just looking for something to complain about?

If the complaint is about lolita complex spilling into my shmups, that is distasteful and I'd rather not have it.

If the complaint is about cuteness, there's no problem from my point of view. Cute is good.

The general consensus seems to be a lot less discriminating than that. I'd go as far to say that the word "loli" often refers to any game that has a cute female, even if there's no mention or implication of fetishes being present. You could point to fanart and such, but under that logic one could easily consider even Mario to be potentially pornographic.

OK, so I was taking "loli" a little too strictly. I thought it still carried that original meaning. But, right, I suppose it's not so common for shmups to depict young girls in a sexualized manner.

I don't really like so many of the lolita games. It's going overboard where most of them are Loli games. Cave is a good example. Their games used to be cool looking, now...well, they have a bunch of little girls in them. That is not good. If you don't think it's a problem, how about we re-imagine classic games like R-Type and Thunderforce and put the characters from Cotton in them. How good would that be? It wouldn't be.

I mean, they don't look cool. Either you like the look because A) you're into young girls or B) you're a fag

Or maybe you're just weird. I like Pocky and Rocky. Anyway, it's too much. Way too much.

I really don't understand why people complain about this so much. There are countless shmups out there that have no loli-type characters in them, let alone any characters at all. If you don't like it, play one of those instead. It's really that easy.

Well, judging from your sig and avatar, you obviously like these types of games. lol

But really, it's just that companies like Cave have went the loli way, and there really isn't much else being offered. I would say most games that come out that are worthy of discussion are unfortunately adorned with lolis.

I love danmaku, and I hate lolis, but I put up with the lolis in newer Cave games because the games themselves are kickass. I just really wish they didn't have friggin' lolis! Any kind of badass plane or space ship, cool. Little anime girl? No thanks.

Just like with the fashion industry, what be may hot today may be out of fashion the following season. This applies to the specialized niche genre of shmups as well. It's all based on what a given shmup developer is okay with chosen main character designer or main art designer in terms of aestethics. Could be a fad or phase of some sorts. If it rakes in profits for Cave doing the current loli theme that they have going on, they can do anything they damn well please.

What kind of a new arcade shmup PCB will be released next after Death Smiles II? It sure would be nice to sit in on a Cave game development roundtable brainstorming session and hear the ideas being tossed around for a new shmup title developed from the ground up. Wouldn't you agree? ^_~

Games from 20 (actually 23) years ago that haven't changed much in terms of substance definitely do not qualify.

death smiles really didn't bother my loli wise.... I actually like the game and theme. if the word loli didn't exist I probably wouldn't even think about it.

it's not like I was rolling my eyes at maria while playing SOTN for being a loli.

still I wouldn't pout at cave making a new industrialized military looking shooter. I could totally go for something raiden fighters/old raizing like also though.

things like mushi and esp galuda I don't count. they just have anime characters blowing crap up like 50 billion other games I've played going back to the NES.

It wouldn't bother me at all if everyone else thought the same but the way things are sexually depictive in a lot of games (Otomedius is a good example) you can't help but interpret it as a sex symbol. Otomedius is CERO C... I wonder why? Death Smiles is B.. why would it be B for any reason at all?

But I digress. Beggars (the people who play shmups) can't be choosers. Would you rather there not be any new shmups out there? Of course not.. you're going to eat it up no matter what it is. Shooting Love 200X doesn't have any of that stuff in it.. and it sold like trash.
