lolis are the saddest, most embarrassing thing about the whole genre. However, I'm not a developer. All I can do is complain, so I'm not going to try to tell devs what to make games about. When they make games I like, I play them. I avoid the games I don't like. Pretty simple, really.

There is this remarkable shallowness/lightness to the anime style that makes even sexualized images of young girls seem harmless and unproblematic. It's remarkable really. Still wrong and distasteful, however-- even for those of us who are liberal about sexual mores.

I don't likes games with too much of a cute art style (Parodius, Game Tengoku, Pink Sweets, MMP, others). For me it turns me off from playing it.

I like fantasy-style shooting games like the Mushis and the ESP series.

Ibara wasn't too bad for me, of course there's some loli but some of the designs of the girls gave me a dark impression which I quite like.

I usually like the army style shooters, or something with nice looking ships (Garegga).

But I really like when the game is so damn cool with the art style and the voices (BATRIDER!!).

I suppose we should all be glad that nobody has figured out a way to translate that scene into COMPELLING SCHMUP GAME PLAY yet. Or sad, I dunno.

I'm not really a big fan of either; but still, the genre is vast... plenty of games past and present to suit your needs. You just have to find them.
Or you can just make your own.. I doubt anyone else is going to force you to include underage girls or an obnoxious excess of bullets.

As for other people's tastes (what's popular, what gets discussed, etc.) ... well, not much you can do about that.

Another point for the DonPachi's copilot (it's as awesome as it gets, boss warning message included!), WELCOME TO VIOLENT CITY, the 'cock rock' of DoDonPachi, DDP DOJ's violent bullet hell and the "WATCH OUT, WATCH OUT!", the echoey techno-dude from Gradius V and the fairies from Raiden. Hell yeah, fairies.

Oh, and DDP Daifukkatsu is the ultimate revenge against giant mecha lolis: you, the last macho pilot of the universe in your mega warship of doom and marshmallows, fight this crazy weird old general with god complex and his army of giant loli-transformers. V for Vendetta, baby! Beat the shit out of them! Oh, wait, there was a different story behind?

Actually, the two things that irk me are the stupid high-pitched watatatata voices and the character selection screens. Instead of "pick the big guns and toys to blast the Bydo Empire or that cool ship with lock-on guided laser missiles that pierce heavens and shit death upon thee", it is "pick your underaged eye candy/KAWAII-SO-CUTE to watatata with in Technicolor!".

And then they all watatatatata'd against fluffy pink fluffs. And God was a cow. And the cow spits danmaku. And the danmaku comes from a baby (someone needs to refloat that picture from the DS thread). And the baby was a boss too. Death Smiles dixit. That or we end up like one of those Artseneit (sp?) hentai shooters.

Whatever, the above mess is by no means a serious post so no "serious business". Some sense of humor, please.

It's kind of amazing to me how many people complain about lolis in shmups. Does it really bother you to have little girls as the main characters THAT much? I mean, you don't really have to be a lolicon to at least find them cute.

I like airplane shootin' and spaceship laserin' just as much as the next guy, but I do enjoy some lolis from time to time. Even ISO, REVERED GOD OF SHMUPPING has submitted scores under the names かがみん and わっち

Instead they're spank-fodder for dudes with black berets. Also bagels. Nifty art style in that game. I like the original Chitta better though (as seen in Raizing's genre-beating 1993 shmup "Mahou Daisakusen").
