8/16bit games with underwater themes?
8/16bit games with underwater themes?
Hey guys,
I'm doing some creative bathroom redecorating and am looking for 8/16bit games with underwater themes to use for artwork. Early 8bit games are preferred, as most art will probably be cut vinyl and thus simplicity is important. Examples would be games like Jungle Hunt or NES Jaws. Cheers.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
Yeah, I'm avoiding the whole Mario thing a bit -- actually, would prefer to avoid cartoony themes in general; I'm more in the market for 8 bit realism.

Sqoon perhaps? http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/sqoon/sqoon.htm
Good suggestions so far. I like the Sqoon sprites especially. I had thought about using Darius bosses, but I want some real aquatica in this case. I think the alligators in Jungle Hunt are probably the best example of the type of sprite work I'm looking for, although I'm still trying to figure out the exact style. Ecco would be perfect, but it's a bit too detailed and colorful for the type of simple graphic approach I'm trying for.

Probably still a bit too detailed -- really need to find stuff where each element can work in one or at most two colors.
edit - although the Acitivision game (Sea Quest?) is great - those fish will look really cool blown up huge.

Here. You can't go simpler than a 1-color sprite Submarine. (And it's yellow, too!)

Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
right lets think. Now i know there is a nice pic of Blodia and the octopus fighting below either bursting out of the water or on the seabed. Its in the Capcom design works. Actual pixel art you could do with a uo poko its very very underwater. or maybe go with a theme colour around one of two set pieces of art (maybe not a water based game)
Blue/aqua bathroom

Re: 8/16bit games with underwater themes?
Im working on some stuff at the moment where I can print on Canvases. Its a while off and im not 100% sure if I can do it. I may be limited to slightly bigger than an A3 sheet I also know a group of guys who make Car wrap vinyl so maybe I could get that done and you could back that on to your own canvas. work out a little cheaper doing it yourself. the good thing about this is that its designed to go on cars get pounded with dirt and take sunlight bleaching and stay looking nice so moisture in the air would not dammage the artwork. then there is the vinyl which i stick to shirts which i could technically print on to the vinyl and then heat press it on to a canvas. but you would be limited to a piece of A3 with a small white borderit290 wrote:Hey guys,

the tricky bit about vinyl that your talking about is that its rare to be able to get it to match the pixel of colours its one of the reasons why I have stayed away from pixel artwork with my shirts (well until now, im working on some shirt) You can get it made to order from a pantone colour but your talking about 50+ GBP per meter with a minimum order of XX meters.
For a large piece of artwork I would say getting a sheet of car wrap would be the best way of getting the colours spot on.

Seconded; Sqoon is a must have for your NES: http://www.nesguide.com/games/sqoon/Dragoforce wrote:Sqoon perhaps? http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/sqoon/sqoon.htm

Thirded; Sqoon was the first game that came to mind when I read the OPdave4shmups wrote:Seconded; Sqoon is a must have for your NES: http://www.nesguide.com/games/sqoon/Dragoforce wrote:Sqoon perhaps? http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/sqoon/sqoon.htm

Hey Lordstar,
Thanks for that. I'm an ex-large format graphics guy, so I have access to plenty of resources for that stuff. The production is not a problem for four color and car wrap type stuff, but I'm going with simplicity here for graphic reasons. I'm not worried about creating a pixel-accurate reproduction in terms of color; I just want a cool underwater environment.

Herr Schatten: Now THAT is perfect. Thank you!
Sven: Bubble man has some great stuff too; I think I might actually use his the bubbles from that game for something, heh.
