Get your prostrate exams :(

Post by popawell »

As of 3:25 pm, my dad is now on his death bed. He is dying of prostrate cancer and the things it brought with it.

He is near his 3rd year now since the initial diagnosis, compare that to the potential 20 he could have had.

He is 63 years old.

I'm really sorry to hear that.

As for the topic, at what age are you supposed to start taking prostate exams?

Sorry to hear that.

Yeah, you are supposed to check yourself in the shower regularly. (As with women for breast cancer)

Sorry to hear that about your dad.

My uncle recently passed away from leukemia. The chemo was successful, but it was so strong that it knocked his liver out. :(

You are supposed to regularly check out your testicles in the shower, but I doubt you would be able to tell if there is something wrong with your prostate unless you are a trained professional.

In order to get your prostate checked up you go to the doctor. He will then put on latex gloves, lube up his finger, stick it up your butt, and feel around in there.

It feels really freaky and not very pleasant, but it's still way better than having cancer!

Sorry to hear that. You don't need prostate exams until you're over 50, so don't worry about it just yet. If you have a history of it in your family, start getting yearly exams at 40.

Yep. It's fully possible to get it around 40, though, so the exams are a definite must-have when you're the proper age.

First of all: I wish you strength and wisdom in this difficult times.
I hope you can let him go without having to regret anything in your relation.

People die all the time, but at 63 and due to this cause is very sad indeed.

On your poll question: I never get a check up since I consider myself to young to have a big chance of having it.
And to be honest, if getting yourself checked for this yearly you should get a full screening for everything every year if you want to be thorough.

I'd rather not know if I was terminally ill. (*sticks head in sand*).

Anyway I hope you can say farewell to your father in a way you can cherish.

My sincere condolences!

You're supposed to start getting your checks at 40. (6 years to go until the party starts). That's a bummer. I don't think most people realize how bad chemotherapy really is. The cancer may not kill you, but the chemo will fuck you up for ages. My mom got over breast cancer (stage 2) a couple of years ago. She did one chemo session and said fuck that.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Yes, you should do your checks... definitely. They blood tests are apparently 99% accurate, if you really don't want a doctor violating you.

I've never had my "prostrate" (adj. - lying flat), but I did have my prostate examined earlier this year (seriously). I'm 31.

But if you don't do chemo, the cancer will get worse and kill you eventually. It's not like it's gonna heal all by itself.

Chemo is still bad but it's the only option for a cure.

This is really strange, my grandfather also has prostate cancer. He had an examination recently though and I don't think it has come back.

an uncle of mine had pancreatic cancer, and he used to be a heroin user for some 20+ years. but he was clean for a few years before he was diagnosed. his body was too frail and while he beat the cancer, the chemotherapy was so damaging he only lived 5 more months

to lighten the mood a bit:
there's a program on channel4 over here called Embarassing Bodies, and they go through all sorts of weird shit. fungal infections, excessive body hair, etc etc. anyways, they were here at gloucester for a mens special over at the rugby ground. and the idea is they set up a free clinic and you can get yourself checked out for whatever. and this dude in his 40s is worried he might have prostate cancer. so the male doctor lubes up the glove, and spends a very awkard 30 seconds fiddling around inside the guy's bumhole, and then says "Nope! You're fine."

by all means get your tests. but don't do it on channel 4. i beat he almost wishes he did have something wrong

He passes away around 10 last night.

My mother had left my sister and I home so we didn't have to see what death is really like, she said his last few hours were not peaceful.

Thank you everyone for your support, these last few days have been very hard for me and my family. I hope nobody else here has to go through what happened to him, thank you for heeding the lesson my dad has taught many through his illness the last 6 months he lived.

May he rest in peace.

Edit: My dad was 59, shame on me for getting that wrong. >.<
