List of shmups for the JAP Xbox360

Post by admith »

Well, I'm considering to buy a Japanese Xbox360 to play Deathsmiles, and I need to know the others shmups I need to buy for this system.

And please, feel free to put a few words reviewing each of this shmups.

Thanks in advance.

Aside from the xbox live shmups, what shmups, (if any) are region free? None?

Death Smiles - Haven't tried yet, supposedly it's good.
Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label Extra - Just play the PS2 port, trust me
Otomedius Gorgeous - Decent game but nothing special
Raiden Fighters Aces - Great port of the Raiden Fighters series
Raiden IV - If you like Raiden, you'll like this
Senko No Ronde - Virtual On meets shmups. Good for 2 players.
Shikigami No Shiro III - Pretty good
Shooting Love 200X - Average, 2 Dreamcast games and some minigames. Up to personal taste here.

And none of the JP shmups are region free. Raiden Fighters Aces is getting a stateside release at some point.

Sorry but, ¿What means TBR on

Ketsui - Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra (TBR)
Mushihimesama Futari (TBR)?

I LOVE Mushihimesama on the PS2. ¿Is Futari another game or it's the same?

And ¿Could you tell me something about Ketsui?

TBR = To be released :)

Edit: Futari is the sequel to the former Mushi game.

I have a European 360, PAL. Can I flash it so it could run the Japanese games?

I mean it is't illegal to flash right, if I buy the games?

i don't know what's legal in sweden anymore :(

flashing the dvd drive won't let you play imports, you have change other things.

ooh :( Was gonna be good if it worked, becouse it's cheaper to flash. But it's seems like the only thing to do is to by a Japanese 360.

Hopefully Senko no Ronde 2 gets a 360 port. I don't see why it wouldn't.

There is a way to mod an old version of the kernel to change the region of your 360. But you need a modchip of sorts and that is quite expensive (> US$ 50) plus all the mess with the installing and downgrading of the OS.

Easier and cheaper way is to import a console. If not Japanese, Asian and Korean consoles are cheaper and all of them are NTSC-J.

I will keep an eye open for some cheap console. I always wanted to play Mushi and Ketsui XD

I'm also very interested in getting an NTSC-J capable console but shipping prices to Spain are ridiculous most of the times... I guess I sould focus on my new born Saturn collection.

So, basically, you're saying that if I buy an "Asian" or Korean XBOX360, Japanese region games will work without problems?

One more to add to the list:

Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta will be released in June. It's a vert scrolling shooter by G.Rev (Under Defeat, Border Down, Senko no Ronde).

All of the Japanese disc releases of the above mentioned games are region locked. None of them are released in any other region except for:

* Senko no Ronde (aka "WarTech" for Western release, released in NA and EU by Ubisoft)

* Shikigami no Shiro III (the superior 360 port is Japan only, but the Wii version did get a North American release courtesy of Aksys)

* Raiden Fighters Aces (not yet released outside of Japan, but supposedly getting a US port from Valcon Games)

There are no XBLA shooters that aren't also available on the US/EU XBLA.

There is: Aegis Wing. Available on US marketplace, but not on the EU one. I'd guess that it's unavailable to JPN accounts, too.

Not that it's a game worth worrying about, ofc.

Asian, definitely. An Asian 360 will also allow you to play PAL games, too. Which is probably why they were impossible to source on import when I was looking for mine, although as that's over a year back now it may well not be the case any longer.

Plus if you buy an Asian system you get a 240v psu, so just buy a European plug adaptor. Jpn consoles ship with a 110v psu :(

What is superior about the 360 port of Shikigami III? I have the US Wii release and now I'm curious about whether it would really be worth importing the 360 one

I've got both versions and haven't noticed a major difference, but I haven't spent much time with the Wii version. The PC version has the usual pros and cons of PC releases.

Fantastic job, Elixir. That was very useful. So I basically can use my PAL power supply on a JP system without risking a burnout? I didn't clearly understand.

The 360 port runs at a higher resolution, so it looks considerably more crisp on an HD monitor (and presumably more accurate to the capabilities of the Type X board, which I've never actually played). Haven't compared both on a low-res monitor.

The Wii version also has some odd screen stretching - it will fill the screen on Tate mode beyond the original dimensions (whereas if you're using a rotated wide screen on the 360 version, original dimensions are preserved and letterboxes are added to the top/bottom of the screen). On Yoko mode, the Wii version stretches the screen wider than the original dimensions. There is no ability to change the screen width/height in the Wii version, though there is in the 360 version.

I'm not aware of any gameplay differences, but I'm no Shiki3 expert. It really does look much nicer on 360 though. The Wii port isn't bad, and if you're not a huge fan of the game it's fine. I'm picky like that though, so I'm glad I got the 360 game even though I had the Wii port already.

Was Shiki III originally designed for HD? The Wii one lacks widescreen support and looks much better on TVs that support a 4:3 setting.
