What is the hardest SHMUP you`ve ever played?

Post by Oli »

So...I was wondering...
What is the hardest SHMUP game out there?

I`ve played some pretty hard ones...to me, Mushihime-sama has been the hardest I`ve played so far. But, perhaps you fellow SHMUP players can inform me of any harder ones?

Ah, and forgive me if I am not so well-versed in the world of SHMUPs, I`ve only started playing them last summer, so I haven`t gotten a chance to see all that`s out there; but to be sure, I`ve played a great amount of SHMUP games, rather than just stick to the popular and well-known ones.

Is Ibara really that hard? I'm seriously considering picking up a kit.

To stay on topic, probably DonPachi's second loop.

Anything with walls that try to kill me. Or maybe touhou because the art is so bad you need inhuman mental strenght to keep playing. Perhaps DOJ or Image fight how they become insanely hard when it comes to 2-ALL. Then again you could debate about games that you can set the difficulty, you might as well go max rank Garegga and curse how impossible it is when you can't even kill anything let alone dream about dodging stuff.

Where's the list of the games that are hardest to 1cc/2-ALL again?

As far as I'm concerned, I'd mention R-Type serie.

When I explode in Ikaruga, or Radiant or Dodonpachi or other Cave games I could try, I almost always know where my mistake was. Makes me wanna correct it and try again.

On the opposite, exploding in R-Type does not learn me anything (and ends the game by the way).

Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou - even the 1st loop destroys me.

EDIT: Oh, and 1CC A.P. Batrider WITH all the special bosses isn't easy either.

Two games instantly spring to mind:

Battle Garegga on the Saturn, I find it difficult even with the coloured bullets turned on

Mushihime-sama PS2 - It's difficult from the start in my opinion and just get progressively harder.

It's not the hardest, but Gradius III (Arcade, not SNES) will hand out a swift and decidedly player-unfriendly beating.

Potential candidates:
Gradius III arcade
Gradius V
Dangun Feveron
Mushihime-sama Ultra (haven't played Futari, it's probably harder)
ESPGaluda Arrange
Battle Garegga

I would mention the R-Type series, as well as most Psikyo games, except that those have a lot of cheap deaths and require memorisation to get through. I don't really want to call that true difficulty, but instead artificial difficulty.

Radiaint Silvergun, namely due to how some of the bosses act [WTF is with Gallop? I still can't remember his motions well enough to beat him w/o creditfeeding...]

[EDIT]:
Image Fight takes the cake. Bloody fucker, I forgot about it.

I actually got interested in Image Fight because of this list, and oh shit that game is hard. Even with autofire you're gonna have some serious trouble with it. And let's not even mention the penalty zone.

One on the megadrive with a helicopter, vertical shmup, insanely well programmed AI, bullets shot ahead of target very annoying. Might have been tiger heli or kyo kyu tiger or something. Eliminate down was quite difficult aswell.

Twin Cobra (Japanese name Kyukyoku Tiger, always have to look up its spelling). Besides the clairvoyant sniping, I love the opening takeoff sequence. That heli sprite just keeps ballooning until it's a coffin with rotors.
