I'd also like to know this for certain either way. :)

I'm playing the Japanese version, and I've found no option to turn off the announcer. Maybe it's in a slightly updated release?
Zweihander wrote:I picked up the "evaluation edition" from my good friend The Internet, and I must say, it's a marvelous improvement over the shittastic nature of the first Space Invaders Extreme game. Got rid of a lot of gimmicky bullshit, made the boss fights more epic, and the saucer boss' bouncy-shots are actually AVOIDABLE now.
What didn't you like about SIE1? Even if SIE2 is clearly steps ahead of that, the first game still had some value as a new entry.

But I will agree with you on the saucer's bouncy shots in SIE1. Fuck that boss to Hell.

Anyone knowledgeable on the rules of Multiplayer?

The bonus rounds and 1-up roulette seemed way too gimmicky. I'm glad the second game ditched the roulette wheel shit, and made GREAT use of the top screen by placing the bonus round behind the regular waves of enemies. First game felt like it tried to be too many things at once and lost touch with what it was. Sequel kept it real, IMO.

See, I had asked that because SIE1 has gone untouched for a week straight. I had actually forgotten some of the features it had. :S

Streamlining the bonus rounds like that helped the overall gameplay a lot. The UI changes are great, too: the chain meter is displayed next to your ship instead of on the top screen, the power-up meter is along the bottom of the bottom screen, and the Round Feature indicator now doubling as the UFO flight path is a genius touch. Solid sequel all around.

Even if it is a decent effort for the starting entry, I may never go back to SIE1 for reasons other than the music. I hope this sells well enough to justify another sequel.

Why are you always so keen on making known to everyone that you pirate games instead of buying them? You know, this is generally not considered cool on this board.

I've been spending too much time at the trading station and hi-scores sections - I missed the SIE2 news.

Bloody excited by this one, and really hoping the OST's as good. Loved the soundtrack to the first game enough to buy it and actually play it all the time... amazing for listening to riding my bike through London traffic feeling angry and swearing at strangers...

This wasn't in the game... Unless it's some different mode I haven't played yet...

And yeah, he DID work on this game, after all. ;)

Fuckin' Japan. *Docks a point from non-existent SIE2 final review score*

EDIT: Played it today, and at least Stage 5-D ends with an awesome boss battle. The Gigaship there pulls some neat tricks.

I might get this if it comes out here since the scoring seems more fun. Also I don't think the announcer is that bad at all.

It is stage 5-D's theme.

Oooooooooh.

Yay, more incentive to beat the game on higher difficulty paths. Unfortunately this rom likes to freeze up half the time after a stage is cleared, so I deleted it... Just going to buy it when it's released in America, and if it isn't... then... I'll wait 'til I can find the Jappo version for $30 or less.

Unlocked Extreme Mode (complete all stages), which seems to raise the difficulty up to SIE1 Normal standards. It's worth noting that this Extreme lets you branch stages this time; Stage 3 > Stage 4-A/Stage 4-B > Stage 5-A/Stage 5-B/Stage 5-C.

I started playing this on my commute this morning instead of my usual Ketsui Death Label and besides the seizure inducing background videos it seems like it's going to be more of a blast to play than the first one.

Hopefully the difficulty jumps up a bit, though.

If you go into the options menu, you can alter the background; make it darker, or just turn off animations altogether. I usually just keep it set at the darkest, with animations on... Good for atmosphere.

Actually, the Score Attack record isn't that unfathomable, but it definitely requires a great deal of precision.
The Time Attack record, however, stands at 11 seconds...

That type of precision afforded with the Taito paddle controller...it is a must with both SIE-1 and SIE-2, folks. ^_~

Yeah, that's some AR bullshit.

I experienced some of that when I first saw the high score boards for Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword. 6 minutes, maxed out 99999999999999? My fucking ass.

Should SIE2 see a US release, I'm assuming that the difficulty will get jacked up slightly.

Or it might remain the same difficulty-wise. You never know. ^_~
