Yeah, tell me about it...Nate wrote:Kollision:Mega Drive version, yes (Sagaia); Pretty easy and the music is addictive and makes it fun!Darius II
Saturn version...eh, still a testy little motherfucker - complete w/ rear-screen ambushes and "power-up" traps! Same as in MD ver. but nowhere near as forgiving.
...I've been trying to complete a run through it for 3 days now; it's a hairy bitch.
I agree with you completely
I also had to struggle a LOT to 1cc Darius II for the Saturn.
Do you know if Darius Gaiden is harder than Darius II? It's next on my fish-blasting list, but I'm still sort of traumatized with the second chapter...

Kollision:
It varies in degree of difficulty depending on which path you take; it's certainly more vast and more forgiving than II. I don't know if it's tougher overall than Darius II, but if you haven't played it yet, you need to cause it's way more fun.Do you know if Darius Gaiden is harder than Darius II?

I just remembered:
Zero Wing on Genesis!
It's easy, it's mostly slow - although it can pick up a little in later levels, although nothing like even level 1 of the arcade version - and it's fun! Plus, there's the famous opening video. You can't go wrong!

True. It's a gentler rampup in difficulty than a lot of shmups though. The point that I start actually dying in ZW is stage 5, so I figure that an absolute beginner should be able to make it to stage 3 or 4 before getting a game over. And considering that stage 3 or 4 is exactly where I can get to in most difficult shmups like DOJ, it seems like a good comparison that someone of a lower skill level and slower reflexes might find Zero Wing to be a pretty good challenge but not insanely hard like some tougher games.Kollision wrote:You can say that about Zero Wing up until stage 4, maybe 5.
The barricade zone (6th stage) is claustrophobic, and the last 2 can definitely give grownups some trouble.

Going all the way back to the NES system... MagMax is a relatively slow and easy shmup that can be looped.
Unfortunately, the sound is terrible compared to the actual arcade version, but the gameplay remains the same as the arcade. Specifically, the above ground sections are relatively slow and controlled, while the underground sections are a bit faster in terms of enemy speed and shot speed, but the scroll rate remains constant.

The sequel Raiden III (PC and Playstation 2) also has this difficulty setting (called "practice") in which enemies don't shoot (you can still die in collisions); the initial bomb and life stock and the levels to play can also be selected.saucykobold wrote:Anyone can beat Raiden Project and Raiden DX on the easiest difficulty settings. In fact, DX's easiest setting has no bullets whatsoever. Both came out for the Playstation, though DX is a Japanese-only release.
Mowing down the opposition to clear a path while collecting items can still be a little challenging, not to mention aiming for 100% kills (if not for a perfect score).
