It's the option right below START when you first load the game. It adds save points every few screens, and when you die you can get a password to use to restart at your save point when you come back to the game. I think it's less fun and more funny. I don't think people are really complaining about it being too hard (I'm not, at least), just that it's not hard in a fun way.
