Game Cube rail shooters??...

Post by dave4shmups »

So far, I only know about StarFox Assault and P.N.O.3 (which I really enjoyed taking for a test drive!) -but you can move around 360 degrees in either of those games, so I don't even know if they qualify as rail shooters.

In any case, I LOVE rail shooters and I am getting a Cube, so I'd love to know about any good ones. :D

It's not quite a rail shooter, and it's definitely not good. I'm not sure how much Treasure had to do with the game either... I've heard that they were involved many times, but it sure doesn't show. Don't waste your money on this unless you get it CHEAP.

I don't think the GameCube really has many notable rail shooters. It's not like it's a very common genre. I think Killer 7 is on rails, but what that means I'm not quite sure.

P.N.03 is not a rail shooter.

Starfox Assault has some rail shooting levels (I've played through level 6 and there have been two so far, plus one other level with a rail shooting segment where you ride on the wing of Falco's Arwing and shoot stuff from there) but most are not. Still a decent game though, and it has Xevious as an unlockable.

Dragon Drive is ok just as long as you go in with no jaded expectations from other games like Panzer Dragoon.

But yeah, don't burn more than $30 on it.

Oh hell, maybe I'd just be better off getting an XBOX (Panzer Dragoon Orta is better then 90% of shmups that I've played), and the rRevolution IS coming out next year-and it will probably be cheaper then either the 360 or the PS3.

The Star Wars Rogue Squadron games for GCN are quite good and probably the closest thing to rail shooters on the system.

I don't really like Space Raiders. It's pretty dull really. But then again, I've never been the biggest fan of Space Invaders. The fact that it was such a hit has always slightly mystified me, it just seems so slow and plodding. But I grew up with Galaga, I was spoiled.

I don't like the original Space Invaders anymore... it was cute back in the day, but now I think of it more for historical value than play value. I highly, highly recommend Space Invaders 95 / Majestic 12 though!!! Give it a try (on mame if necessary) - it's faaaaaantastic. :D

I also like Space Raiders too, but I realize I'm in the minority on that one.

I fail to see how not liking Space Invaders has any relation to Space Raiders other than that they both share a basic concept. How exactly is Space Raiders dull? The action is non-stop.

I just played this for the first time last night (first rail shooter too) at a friend's house. Both the graphics and the gameplay are simply amazing. I plan on picking up a copy at the earliest opportunity. It just may good enough to warrant the purchase of the system by itself.

Same here, but Super Space Invaders '91 is incredibly fun! The Sega Master System got a port of the game...if anyone thinks SMS Sagaia is an amazing port, they ain't seen nothin' yet!

Most definately! :D That and Outrun 2, and a host of other great games. People think that the XBOX is just good for people who like Sports and Racing games, but there is SO much more to the system's library once you start researching.

Plus, the news from E3 is that Microsoft is going to release something like 200 more games for the XBOX just in the next year. Awesome stuff.

You need to stop believing what you hear about E3.

The Xbox 1 has run it's course. Really. There are very few high-profile games left for the system in development, and 200 more games from MS is obviously wrong. MS hasn't released 50 games for the system. They haven't even released 30, I don't think. If you mean 200 total (which I assume  ) I hate to say it, but that's not going to happen either.

Also, if you're expecting good Japanese games... you're going to be left dead in the water as well. Japanese support for the system has always been spotty (except for a few notable titles and the very early days of the system, when Sega released a lot of stuff), and they've pretty much given up on the system entirely. I wouldn't be surprised if Ninja Gaiden Black this sept is the last Japanese game for the system.

Dude, seriously, people say: "don't trust E3, don't trust IGN, don't trust 'Lamefaqs'"...WHO do you suggest I trust for this sort of thing?

Look, all I know is that Microsoft said that over the next year there will be something like 200 titles released for the XBOX 1-and if you get on IGN's XBOX release date site, you'll see that there are PLENTY of XBOX games still to come out. The XBOX 1 has NOT run it's course, that's plain enough to see if you get on this site.

And I'm not getting this thing for Japanese games; I'm going back to the older systems-16-bit mainly-for shmups. I won't be purchasing hardly any more import shmups. I'm well aware that the XBOX has poor Japanese support.

I don't know man, I didn't like the game. And it's the same damn game as Space Invaders. Throw in some more impressive enemies, faster action, some generic video game characters, and a cliched plot. It's Space Invaders deep down. I didn't like the game, simple as that.

Different strokes for different folks. It doesn't affect you, don't start another flame war over this. I'm a fool, I didn't give Space Raiders a fair chance, I was too narrow-minded to see the big picture. Just accept it.

Flame war, wtf are you talking about; you're being *quite* defensive in the face of legitimate questions. I don't have a problem with you not liking a game, what I was commenting on were your complaints about the game which are just silly. Saying Space Raiders is the same game as Space Invaders is like saying that FarCry is the same game as Quake. It's a laughable comparison; by your astute analysis then any game that isn't genre inventing is the same as any initial game in a genre  . Second, you further erode any credibility you might have by saying it's dull. I can understand someone not liking Space Raiders for several reasons but dull? Again, your comments seem to show that you have this game confused with another because it *certainly* isn't dull, in fact it's quite action packed as the shooting never stops and the enemies are dumped on you en masse. It's definitely more action packed than your sentimental "not slow and plodding" fave Galaga :?

Simply asking you to justify your comments isn't starting a flame war. Well...unless of course, your comments are silly and you get extremely defensive because they don't make any sense.

I personally liked what I tried of the GG one better. The invaders crawl down in a slower manner in the SMS version and the gameplay seems a bit more fluid with the Game Gear version.

I'd say go with the Xbox bro...

While Panzer Dragoon Orta definitely isn't the best of that series (not just in my "jaded old gamer" opinion, but in the opinion of most every other fan of the series), I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a damn fine game. If you go into it without understanding or having played Saga, then I'm sure its 100 times better as you aren't watching a great plot get butchered.

But I digress. Its my understand the Xbox has another rail-shooter from From Software, Murakamo or something like that. Not sure how good it is, but given From's track record outside Armored Core (Frame Gride, Otogi), I'd say its at least worth the shot.

Lots of underrated gems on the Xbox, just gotta dig for 'em.

I'm being defensive because you seem to me the kind of guy who jumps on things like this. (see that Saturn flame war a few days ago). And I'm certainly not making a huge leap in comparing Space Invaders and Space Raiders. Space Raiders is clearly Taito's attempt to modernize it's oldest franchise. I mean, they even have very similar names, both in sound and meaning. It's the same basic formula: character restricted to one dimensional movement, several barriers immediately above you offering protection, formations of aliens coming for you.

I don't like the game. And just because there are enemies everywhere does not make a game interesting. I thought it was dull. I was bored stiff. Yes, lots of enemies, but that doesn't make it exciting.

Seriously, though, JP-how are the Saturn Panzer Dragoon games? I even liked Panzer Dragoon Mini, which I tried out on an SMS/GG emulator! :D

And BrianC, I didn't know Super Space Invaders '91 came out on the Game Gear; thanks for that bit of info! Is it a hard to find game?

I'd love to get a Game Gear at some point (OK, I do like playing handhelds-heck, I like playing games anywhere! :D ), but it seems like so many of the great games are friggin' impossible to find! Gajin Punch, for example, told me that GG Aleste goes for like $100 over in Japan! :(

I can tell you about the Saturn Panzer games, but my opinion differs slightly from jp's.

They're for the most part...MARVELOUS.
Zwei is even better than Orta, and Saga is one of the most unique and fun RPGs ever made
But I'm not too fond of the original. . .A little too choppy for my taste. Lacks the refinements that came later in the franchise.

But The games are easily worth the needed cash to get them.
