Biohazard 5 in my house....
Well yeah, of course they're not human, but I think making the player underpowered and the enemy overpowered (or grouped in masses) to add to the scare factor in a survival horror game is a pretty piss poor way of handling things. At least with games like Project Zero, another survival horror series, it seems about equal and it usually isn't a clusterfuck of the player trying to find ammo or for the most part, running right through zombie mobs because they can't do anything else.

Again, you need to apply mob control strategies. For example, mobs coming from both sides? throw a flash grenade and get them all on one side. Too many enemies? throw a grenade or use the shotgun. Keep moving and pay careful attention to your surroundings. I rarely ever run out of ammo for any of my guns and I'm using the shotgun whenever there's more than two enemies. The shotgun can get groups of 5 or more enemies, you got grenades that can get a bunch of them, if you're surrounded you can escape with flash grenade, you have precision shooting with every gun and so on. I don't see how the player is underpowered (even in pro mode.)Elixir wrote:Well yeah, of course they're not human, but I think making the player underpowered and the enemy overpowered (or grouped in masses) to add to the scare factor in a survival horror game is a pretty piss poor way of handling things. Sorry, but mobs of zombies aren't scary, nor is the manipulation/killing of. It ends up becoming trial and error as you fumble around running through them. Why waste a flash grenade when you can just walk right past them, as they slowly attempt to attack you but fall over in the process?
This is meant to be a survival horror game, but it's like LaserGun said. All you're doing is going around, killing zombies (or being unable to kill them all and wait for the "timer" to expire, like in the first demo of RE5) and picking up items (which you can't see up close, without adjusting the camera).

This. Ever since Dino Crisis 2, Capcom games have been much more action orientated. You just need to practice a few times until you get good enough to clear a stage.LaserGun wrote:RE stopped being 'survival horror' by the 3rd game, it's more like a shoot the crap out of freakish horrible monsters and collect the keys game.
And of course with RE5 having Inafune as it's Producer it's going to be even more about action and less about horror.
Yeah, the switch to action is clear. But the controls just aren't on par with the task. Slow aiming, poor turning, can't fire while moving... It did work on RE4 single play but the network action in the RE5 demo is chaotic and not very fun.MX7 wrote:This. Ever since Dino Crisis 2, Capcom games have been much more action orientated. this thread sucks... if anyone who is getting the game on PS3 pm me for co-op. I doubt I'll read up on here anymore, or bother discussing anything that is next gen that isn't amazing in all known perfect ways.
whatever happened to to playing games b/c they were just fun... does everything have to be a revolutionary 10 out of 10. I guess it's this forum and should be expected.... just sucks b/c I am not really active in other forums.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

This is my most anticipated game of the year. RE 4 was phenomenal.
My Collection: http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/col ... Collection
This thread does suck. RE4's control restrictions are entirely purposeful, and make the game the experience it is - not one with crap and clumsy controls, but a game with bags of tension, elements of think on your toes strategy, and the most oppressive zombie experience ever. There's a reason this is already considered one of the best games ever.
I can't wait to get my copy of RE5.

This makes it sound like you haven't actually played the game.RE stopped being 'survival horror' by the 3rd game, it's more like a shoot the crap out of freakish horrible monsters and collect the keys game.

I haven't, I was mainly talking about the direction the series went after RE2. You had shit tons of ammo in RE3, RE:CV, and RE4. There are no 'survival' mechanics to speak of really, you have enough ammo to plug away at enemies from a distance and enough herbs to take care of you if you did get injured. You mainly go from point A to B, killing enemies and collecting keys/solving a puzzle to gain access to the next area. This makes it sound like you haven't actually played the game.
Also RE4's control scheme is the way it is simply because the first 4 games were the same, you would end up with just another 3rd person shooter if you made the characters too agile. But then again that didn't stop RE4 from feeling like an arcadey 3rd person shooter. Just watch Mercenaries replays to see how easy it is to control crowds of enemies for minutes with just a couple flash grenades and a handgun. I didn't ever feel tense or like I had to plan my attacks well, especially when you get the suplex move, just throw a flash grenade and suplex the hell out of everything.
I'm not saying the RE games are bad because I do like them myself, it's just that calling them 'survival horrors' just because you're shooting zombies and other monsters is a bit dated now, RE4 was just a 3rd person action game really.

only one i played was re4, but couldn't finish it on easy. stupidly saved it at a point where i couldn't back track and i didn't have any ammo. i'd been firing bullets like i was playing dodonpachi
you had these dudes you had to kill by hitting weak points with your rifle or some shit

Completely agree. I don't have any particular reverence for the RE series in general, but RE4 was a great title. There's obviously a school of though which rejects 4 for not being a survival horror game...and then there's the rest of us who enjoyed the game for its high production values and huge fun factor.Strider77 wrote:this thread sucks... if anyone who is getting the game on PS3 pm me for co-op. Posts about how many bullets it takes to kill a zombie miss the fact that you shouldn't be using more than one or two, since most of the damage should be coming from kicking the zombie to the ground and stabbing them in the face.

is there a demo on PSN like on XBL?
If so, try it.
It's not much survival horror, more like survival stress test.
I'm only judging by the demo here, but it feels more like a generic action game, there really is no more emphasis on a creepy atmosphere.
So if you want to play it for the creeps, you should skip on it.
If you enjoy the gunfights (i don't), it's worth getting i suppose.
if you want a good example of creepy atmosphere done right, try Fatal Frame II.

For $10 or less, there's no reason you shouldn't get RE4 (I own three versions myself.) There's quite nothing like it. The Wii version supposedly has the better controls because you can point and shoot at the screen so get that one and you'll only have to deal with an analog stick for movement.
Edit: Silent Hill 2 for the ultimate in creepiness, though boring gameplay. Fatal Frame 2 wasn't as scary as the first one. However, it looks considerably better and I liked the girls. RE4 is more action oriented, but it has its creepy moments too.

Where could I E-mail or mail to if I want to address my ideas and Opinions?
My pre-ordered copy of the 360 version arrived a day early. I'm four hours in and loving every minute. It's very much the same experience as RE4, so your opinion of its predecessor will no doubt be your opinion of RE5. Single player works fine so far. AI Sheva doesn't seem to get in the way as often as she did in the demo, though that could be just that I've got used to her being there. So far I've only died once on account of her, and that was only when I was hanging close to the chainsaw guy for too long to pick up items.
The graphics engine is jaw dropping at times. There are places that look pre-rendered even though I'm pretty sure they're real time. If there is any FMV it's so close to the actual game engine that it's hard to tell the difference. Special mention goes to the facial animation, shadows and subtle motion blur effects.
As for the number of bullets the zombies take, most of the basic enemies can be taken down with two bullets if you know what you're doing. Shoot them a couple of times in the leg until they stagger, then uppercut them and curb-stomp them once they hit the ground. In fact the retail code seems to have been tweaked since the demo so that a couple of shots to the chest can take down some zombies on the early stages, though it varies. They definitely take more hits later on, but you have a wider arsenal by then.

There's a menu option to toggle off team damage. The demo didn't have this option, which probably left some people with a bad impression of the online co-op.Elixir wrote:This. Online coop with team killing, poor controls and zombies that take 82 bullets per hit. No thanks.

hahaha jpj, I love it.
Anyway there's one thing Elixir posted at the top of this page that bugs me:
Running through a crowd of zombies because you can't do anything else is actually as scary as these games can get and still be in control of things (and not just completely at the whim of camera angles and mooooody lighting).
Dino Crisis was great; it sucked a bit having to watch every bullet but I got through it just fine in a few days. The 3D areas were so good, I thought.
Also, TREX ATTACKS THROUGH DA WINDOW, holy crap noplace is safe. Actually I hated the one timed sequence where you had to get across a ledge with T-REX coming after you, and maybe a couple other sequences were onerous - other than that, good fun. Still need to open up DC2 for PC and give it a play (I played the first on PSX, have it on PC too though).
