Psychopaths are more likely to go off sooner than later. For these people, this event is waited for with a fervor similar to what normal people reserve for waiting on Diablo 3.

Word. This latest killing spree won't change anything in the US.

Pretty much the same as the last time, I guess.

There will be a lot of talk about arms regulation until they find out that the regulation they have is pretty tight already and that not applying it properly was the bigger part of the problem.
The parents will not be bothered with facing their part of the responsibility.

Then Günther Beckstein and Christian Pfeiffer will crawl out from under their rocks and call for a ban on FPSs, regardless of whether the guy has ever been in contact with any of those or not.

In the end, everyone will agree that they have to do something, and we will end up with having age rating stickers bigger than the game boxes they are applied to.

They weren't the same day, as the German killings were yesterday; Alabama's were Tuesday.

And yes, obviously the solution is more guns for everybody, because guns don't kill people, communists with guns kill people.

@ Herr Schatten:

I don't really get the argument that "tight regulation" can be improperly applied. Either the regulation isn't tight after all, or there's a funding gap (which again precludes "tight regulation"). I get your point about overly restricting people who don't seem to pose a risk, but it seems somewhat irrelevant when even conscientious gun owners are essentially trying to secure a miniature arsenal. I agree that restricting media and things that are at worst just normal societal factors isn't helping.

Tight regulation means a 17 years old is not supposed to have access to any firearms, if they are not locked away at home in a way that he can't overcome the parents commit a crime.
Some changes to the law that come to mind and are not overly unrealistic could be: forbid the holding of large ammounts of ammunition (if I heard correctly he was carrying hundreds of rounds, why would anyone have this much ammunition at home?!) or higher penalties for not preventing minors access to guns.
Not that i think it would change anything...

The inevitable discussion about computer games annoys me already:
The "friends" that were interviewed talked about how he played Killerspiele (killer games) all the time. A word that no youth in their right mind would use but they seem to be conditioned by the media to say what is expected of them to say.

People need smaller hitboxes

Post by DEL »

This is an on-topic one:
Akihabara massacre (Japan, 2008): Tomohiro Kato hit five pedestrians with a truck, then stabbed twelve people. Kato killed seven and injured 10.
They was one in Finland last year wasn't there?
The Korean one mentioned above was hardcore:
Uireyeong massacre (South Korea, 1982): Woo Bum-kon killed 57 and then himself in eight hours, using grenades and an M1 Carbine. 35 people were also wounded.

The scary thing about the German one was that it was only the second worst  in Germany.

Sickening that these creeps almost always pick sitting targets like schools.

The Belgian Creche one recently was a scary one for me, as my son attends a Brussels Creche :? .

Spoon: that makes a lot of sense. what is the penalty normally for letting a minor get access to a firearm? i'm interested to see what happens now with this boy's parents... :?

herr: that made me laugh :) isn't this like the 3rd school shooting in germany since the turn of the century... :? :? :?

I heard the parents might be charged with 10.000€ which would be pretty much nothing in my opinion.
But only if the weapons were not locked away properly, as far as I know if he stole the keys or something (which should be easy in a normal family) the parents will not be found guilty.

But don't misunderstand me, I don't want his parents suffer anymore than they already do.
I don't think a harsher penalty would do much since it's a law that only takes action after something went wrong (you can't go to people's homes and look how they store their weapons) and I doubt the deterrence effect would be enough since most people trust their kids (I consider that a good thing).

Already happened (at least here in Switzerland, especially NDS games)

I'm glad there's some proof that banning violent games doesn't change anything.

I heard the guy was into ping pong. Maybe they'll ban that now. That'd be funny.

You act sarcastic now-- apparently you've never been smacked by a ping-pong paddle. It raises a nasty welt...

I'm just watching the German news: no sign on this guy being a gamer really,
apparently his father has a well stocked gun arsenal lying around at home... :?

Not a good thing, especially if your son had mental problems and was in a clinic before.

This is why guncontrol in germany doesn't do jack shit in this particular case.
A total banning of firearms would be great. :/

Radio 2's daily dose of misery and conservative ranting, the Jeremy Vine show was discussing this today. As you can imagine, several of the callers blamed the video games, and another blamed both games and heavy metal.

I'm not kidding sadly, people just called up blaming games and metal even though neither of those things had been mentioned in any of the reports featured in the show, including a segment from a school shooting expert in the USA who made absolutely no mention of cultural influence. The people who ring these kinds of radio shows don't know anything about games of course, and probably have no idea about existing videogame classification and age rating schemes.

In Germany games carry legally enforceable USK ratings in addition to PEGI don't they?

Yes, and they are FUCKING ANNOYING.
As in "they take up the whole cover".
This is especially the case with DS covers.

leave it to the USK to ruin cover art.

A crowbar and the intent to commit mass murder are no match for a simple lock!

Master locks, buy in bulk.

Well apparently they found a copy of counterstrike in his room!  :?

So you can count on games with some violence being on the receiving end of this (like they aren't strict enough in Germany already ).

Being a member of the shmups forum i'll soon be disallowed from pilot training, as they'd be sure of me mounting machineguns onto the 747 I'd be flying... :P
