Looks like a horribly sluggish R-Type rip-off.

Fun game, no complaints here. Ok, there's inertia, but that's the only problem i have with it.

Pretty decent game.
It is free and open source too if I recall.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Wasn't this one of the entries for one of the early shmup-dev.com comps?

Reverse engineer the thing, get rid of the inertia and you have a pretty nifty little shmup. :P

EDIT: I seem to have missed this:

I thought that's where I grabbed this from initially. I agree with what was said above, get rid of the inertia.

I've never seen it done right in a shmup - it always makes things worse.

BTW there's a sequel called...wait for it...Prototype 2.
IMO it's much better than original. There's no shield, there are multiple ships with various abilities, more levels, you have r-type like force pod, which you can also use as a bomb, and generally it feels much more like finished game.

On a serious note- never did understand 'intertia' in a shmup. Kinda like the 'heft' in Killzone 2 (demo at least for sure). Just ends up feeling like slugish controls. (save for something like Solar Jetman and Subterrania)

Some people actually prefer controls with inertia (the guy who made Go Beryllium is one of them, that's why his games have option to switch it on and off), but most of the time it's just misguided attempt at realism. And as for Killzone, FPS have inertia so things like being pushed away by explosions and sliding down slopes are possible.

Does anyone know of a good thread or list about the best doujin shmups? I imagine there has to have been something like that written by the people here.
