- 5 boxes of cherry tomatoes
- 2 bags of 25 apples
- a bag of 10-15 pears
- something like 3 pounds of mushrooms
- A bag of celery.
- A bag of broccoli (4 of 'em)
- 2 small boxes of blueberries
- a bag of 20 oranges
- a big bag of potates
- and a lot of miscellaneous vegetables like peppers and onions.
If you get all that for $40, it's not worth bitching about. No joke, I couldn't get 20 apples for $40...even the bad ones. Be thankful you live in a country smart enough to rape and pillage other countries for oil.
I understand about the crazy prices for Japanese produce and such. One time, I was browsing through a small Japanese farmer's market and saw that they had small watermelons for sale. They were priced at 7,000 yen each. I thought that was quite expensive since you can buy a watermelon in the USA for mere pennies on the dollar. Sure, it's the Mexican labors that do all the hard work that no else is willing to harvest fruits and veggies to feed the USA and the rest of the world. Without them, there would be no food on the table alrighty. ^_~

My place is actually pretty large by American standards. It's larger than what I had in Hawaii, that's for sure. And I hate driving, so don't do it that much. Haven't driven a car to work in... 12 years. So, gas is basically free for me.
Out of curiosity: how many people here have a small kitchen at work?
I work out of
1: My home, which has a large kitchen
2: A studio apartment which has a small kitchen. Gotta buy a fridge though.

They were priced at 7,000 yen each.
Japan is that weird place where domestic is almost always more expensive than import... and it's not unique to food, although it's the most painful one. Most fruits are not only organic, they're quite often looked after quite meticulously. I wish I couldn't taste the difference, but I can. As such, I blow a lot of money on produce...especially in the Spring when the melons are in season.

We have one at my day job, but no stove - microwave only. There ARE a couple of electric griddles stacked up on the shelf that I used to use for making sirloin steaks during my lunch hour; I haven't done that in years, though.

Late to the party...

I used to tell her nicely, but I've begun to say things like, "stop being stupid and buy less." I even volunteer to buy the perishables but she insists on buying them herself so it's all organic. I wouldn't mind that much if all she was wasting was her money, but I give her a good chunk of my salary for expenses around here.
How do you separate expenses? I could recommend she buys all the food, you pay utilities/cable/some equivalent bill, so money spent on wasted food is entirely on her. Also, you could take in some extra fruits to work and let others have them before they go bad.

I give her say $1000 a month and let her take care of it, but since I'm working part-time now, I'm giving her less. I always bring some fruit to work, otherwise, we would have a huge surplus. Nice suggestions.

Well, it boils down to budget, either way. Say you will only pay for $X in food, or you will buy your own food from now on--seems the best solution.

Good luck! :) Managing money sucks :x

Are the rents that high in NYC?

My rent is about $800 without the bills. Living in NYC is not cheap but it definitely beats living in the middle of nowhere with low rent.

I buy food as needed, tend to avoid anything tinned or preserved. Meats a bitch though, need another bird flu scare to get the prices of chicken down.

26yo, asian, single, not bad looks. Her idea of fun is going 3 (or more) times a week to church and also teaches 7 and 8th graders, so her mental sanity is dubious.

She'd rip my head off so no pics.
