Udderdude wrote:I allready replied to his comment, but yeah .. 3d model detail is lost when you squish it onto a low-res screen.
It's also lost when you have to simplify the model to render it in realtime.

The consensus here seemed people were pining for higher resolution renders like in the DeathSmiles port~

Argh, cereal box houses. That's where the True Horror lies.

Until someone can prove to me that the would-be pre-rendered polygons that are broken down into sprites are the same resolution as the ones we're seeing in DS2, I'll shut up. Until then, I declare this a peanut riddled turd.

Here's an enemy screenshot from Deathsmiles (left) and the Xbox port (right). Both have been rendered from the same assets.

The Deathsmiles 2 enemies are nowhere near this quality.

And another one bites the dust...RIP C.A.V.E! :(
At least it saves me a lot of money, no more new cave kits to buy

And yes I'm an elitist hardcore 2D low-res lover boy! 8)

So I went there and played it.. Guess what - it sucked! No surprise. It looked like ass too. May be a very early version of the game, maybe they're aiming for an official release Christmas this year, but either way this is not the way Cave should take.

Pictures and vids up soon, at least I got about 200 pics of the loli cosplayers

It makes terrible business sense to rent out a booth and do all that shit for a release that's going to happen after the next show. We shall see though.

it's all part of doing business for the usual arcade distros and arcade operators as they are the early adopters willing to fork over the serious yen for them brand new Cave PCB kits on day one of release. ^_~

No, it doesn't matter how detailed the models were before, because they were all flattened into 2d sprites...they could have been as detailed as they liked. But now they have to render those models real time, so they are hardware dependent as to how many polys they can render at 60fps.
It was pretty clear Cave don't really care what they can render in 60fps anymore, recent games have been absolutely laden with it, I imagine this will be no better.

I'm guessing by "it" you mean slowdown. I have a feeling even if their hardware was rocking hard enough to run everything at 60 fps, they would still add artificial slowdown.

Ok, so it's not going to look that good. But IMO that 3d model isn't that hot to begin with. Anyway, there are more advantages to using 3d models, like having much more potential animation. With sprites, you are still pretty limited, especially if you use high-res sprites. 3d models can be posed, rotated, etc.

I can't tell exactly how the Deathsmiles 2 enemies look through a blurry Youtube video, will have to wait for high-res screenshots before making a final judgement on that. They don't look like horrible PS1 graphics if that's any indication.

I don't think anyone here has a problem with it.

Well, as an owner of DDPDFK and Futari, if all that immense amount of slowdown is intentional, I'll eat the PCBs.

You know Cave has added intentional slowdown in certain parts to aid players out in their previous arcade shmup PCBs -- it'd be no different with the past few recent PCB offerings with the artificially induced slowdown...think of it as a little perk. Is it time to take a big bite out of those mighty expensive PCBs and see how they taste? ^_~

I can tell when something is running out of steam, and the SH-3 games have certainly been doing that. Hitting fire = slowdown being the most obvious example - there are parts you can make much easier than they should be just by holding C down, because the frame rate drops when you do.

This Cave slowdown = intentional myth has to DIE. They might have done it once or twice in a few places in a few games, but we're talking regular frame drops in all sorts of unpredictable ways.

Mushihime-sama Futari God Mode.... once you're powered up almost all the way, holding the laser down causes serious frame drops. In 1.5, the shot does the same thing.

This had happened in ESP RaDe, but I thought that was history. And now it comes back again.

So I guess it's time for Cave to switch to newer hardware.

Two things I might note offhand about the pics -

1) I don't think that was the original Radirgy on display - it appeared to be running on a yoko screen, which would suggest that it was the upcoming sequel, Radirgy Noah. Just a guess, though.

2) The Atlus fighter looks to be a new revision of Matrimelee, as it appears to re-use a chunk of the artwork from that game, but with a few extra characters added in. And yeah, there have been two old lady fighters for awhile now. ;)

Thanks for posting 'em. :)

Sure, don't be afraid to comment!

1) You're right. Looking closer the title says Noa at the bottom.

2) So, that's the English name of that fighter. This was actually the only game other than Death Smiles II that I played (because the line was fairly short).

For zap,

Thanks for the cool AOU 2009 expo pictures. I like the pic with the sexy gal had who a bit of a wardrobe malfunction...nothing wrong with that -- it's all part of the show anyways. ^_~

And did you get some cool video captured footage as well?

I'm expecting a simil-Otomedius sloppy graphics fest. But Christmas, people! Christmas themed shmups FTW! :D
Hope they developed an intense title. I've never seen them tackling 3D (sort-of) styles and that could be groundbreaking.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Oh they've already tackled it. This was the result:

Not what I'd call "groundbreaking".

You've got to be kidding. It's a Saturn snowboarding game from 1996. Ikeda isn't even in the credits! On top of this, it wasn't a bad game by any means : http://www.segagagadomain.com/saturn-pa ... _slope.htm

You aren't just grasping at straws .. you're grasping at thin air.
