R-Type Dimensions Coming to Xbox Live Arcade
It looks beautiful in 3D form to be honest, it's never looked so good. The choppy scrolling is a bit of a let down though, not sure what else they could have done about it apart from just running it at 60/50 which is what the console/home ports did, depending on region. It should be optional - to run at 60 or run at 'arcade' speed.
I take it everyone /is/ seeing the choppy movement right?

3D seems just as choppy to me.

Movement as in screen, or movement as in controls? I noticed that the controls felt a little clunky when using the 360's analogue stick. However, it seems fine now. I'm not very good with horizontal shmups and never was, but I'll probably end up purchasing this anyway.
Gamertag's Megalixir 360 if you guys want to get some co-op games going.

I mean general scrolling, everything. It's not slowdown, just odd stepping. Might be more obvious on this 40" screen?

Already bought it. Looks great. Here's my first impression (as copied from my xbox.com forum post):
My first reactions... pros
and cons
- the game was almost exactly what i expected
- "B" as auto-fire and "X" as force control is too far away from each other
- no controller remap options
- "B" as auto-fire is slooooooow and pointless to use, tapping slowly with "A" is faster
- above point makes the point about "B" and "X" being too far away insignificant
- 3d graphics are about the quality i expected, not top notch, but 3d that matches the 2d gameplay perfectly
- "retro" = low res, "retro 2" = higher low res, "8-bit" = 256 quantized color. this is cool
but not explained
- 3d retro (not retro 2) 8-bit graphics are amazing. almost the perferred graphical upgrade. try it!
- infinite lives mode... i'm not sure one way or the other, yet.
- haven't tried multiplayer, but it's a
for me
- "proper" widescreen support would have changed the original game, so i like their "zoomed in" implementation
- 1,200 is probably a bit too much
only wasn't an issue for me because I'm a huge fan

custom soundtrack FTW! specifically a 90 minute mix by Adam Beter & Jesper Dahlback(mid '00s electro-tech). goes unbelievably well. i've never played any of the R-types before, but that soundtrack had to go. i'm sorry, but its just awful... this is so much better. some pumping deep techno. game looks amazing! well worth 1200 MP(2 games) imo...

Speaking of custom soundtracks, I'm looking forward to trying out Cannibal Corpse's instrumental From Skin to Liquid with this. Always thought it'd sound boss on a disgusting, sinewy, biological stage, and R-Type certainly has a few of those!
Having only played Super R-Type, I grabbed it. Pretty enjoyable and looks like a good port. Now if only the 360 pad didn't suck...
With stage select and infinite mode added in, I guess there's no loop? And with checkpoints, I suppose there's a different ideal place to suicide for points? (EDIT: haha found out that Super RT was borked with the zero checkpoints thing not the older ones)

Why would a company spend all that time and money on creating the 3D environment, adding all the extra stuff like leaderboards and co-op and then leave the soundtrack alone???
i was looking forward to an updated soundtrack
apart from that it seems great, well worth 1200 points imo

I didn't say I don't appreciate the old soundtrack, in fact I love it, however I did expect a new interpretation of it with this game.RuffNEC wrote:wtf are you comlaining about the soundtrack... custom soundtrack my ass.
hardcore fans will still enjoy the original ST.
BTW I forgot how great the R-TYPE II Highscore Sound actually is... just a dream
If I buy a game which is updated to the current generation (as oppose to a direct port like R-Types) I expect all parts of the game to be updated not just the graphics.
The fact they have not redone the soundtrack just seems very odd.

I’ve already noticed one difference on it compared to the old games. On R-Type II level 2 the yellow bullets go through the force device. In the original they didn’t. I mean, the bullets can be dodged but it’s kind of annoying. I don’t like having to mash to get a good auto fire rate either.
The game does look nice though. They really kept the look of the old games.

The Net-Play Co-op is a bit better implemented than Ikaruga's, but still not what it should be. If you're the host, the game will appear lagless, although you'll see your compatriot plowing through solid matter on numerous occasions). If you're the hosted, you'll be playing with several frames of lag. At least it doesn't drop frames all over the place (like Ika).
I have to disagree. I've already clock-up almost 4 hours of play today alone. The online co-op mode is a wonderful addition in its own right, never mind all the extra stuff in this package. I don't think it's a rush job at all - it took over 2 years to develope.ex.machina wrote:I couldn't stand the sound and the sound effects after a short while of playing. How can they possibly advertise this as a feature? Sorry but imo this shows that too little efforts were put into after all.
I don't think the game is worth the 1200 points.
I noticed it tries to match you with someone as geographically close to you as possible. I was being matched with people in the same town I live in! I noticed it was a lot less likely to lag when matched with people who were closer.Kiken wrote:The Net-Play Co-op is a bit better implemented than Ikaruga's, but still not what it should be.
