The Australian classification website has just updated with a whopper of a scoop - 'R-Type Dimensions' is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade!
From what we can gather, the game is being published by Microsoft themselves, and not title creators Irem, who recently released R-Type Tactics to the PSP. The game is being developed by Tozai Inc, who are also currently working on the fantastic looking 'Lode Runner' for Xbox Live Arcade.
Will it be a new version of R-Type, or a variation of a previous title? It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Surprising how the Xbox 360 has become the platform of choice for these kinds of games.
Also rated this week were 'A Kingdom for Keflings' as well as the first of anything about 'Penny Arcade Episode 2', which we should see more about at PAX.
360 is really becoming the shmup system of choice at the moment!
If it's half as good as the first two game I'm sold. Still trying to 1cc the first one, the 2nd half of stage 7 keeps owning me!

I kind of do too, but I don't see how it could be. It really doesn't make sense for MS to be the publisher and someone other than Irem to be developing it though.
My money is on a stylish remake, just like Galaga Legions and Pac Man CE.
Funny how many of you "shmup fans" already know that'll suck...
Probably the same people who critized me for my negative reaction to the Gradius Rebirth screenshot.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking the title suggested. Something with lots of purty colors that usually go into XBLA updates.
Specifically, it makes me think everything will look like Stage 6.2 of R-Type Final.

I would even add to this by saying that IREM probably doesn't even have the knowhow to pull off a new arcade style R-Type game anymore.
Wasn't that even mentioned by the producer of Final...a now or never situation.
Imo it's better to have skilled non-IREM people reverse engineering the original design than giving the game to some clueless new school guys at IREM.

Quite. Also, R-Type is 21 years old. It's not like the original staff are all still hanging around the office just waiting to pull one more job. Jesus.

I agree with this. The Irem of the late 80s, early 90s doesn't really exist anymore. I have no fuckin clue who these guys developing this game are but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.
I really don't see any point in a "stylish" remake. I don't really see how the original's graphics could be improved a whole lot, unless they're planning on bastardizing it into 3D.
Of course, that's just an opinion. Always seeking netplay fans to play emulated arcade games with.

"Bastardizing it into 3D"? You mean the graphics...like in R-Type Delta, only better and in HD?
You sure it's not the choice of platform that is obscuring your view to see the "point in a 'stylish' remake"?

Some "Final" that last game was. God, just put it to rest already and stop besmirching its good name.
Wow...
Why does no one see that with TFVI?
At any rate, uh... neat news I guess. The only R-Types I ever cared much for were the SMS port and Super R-Type (nostalgia mostly). But... I'll probably check this one out.
