shmups featuring biplanes
Can anybody think of any shmups where the player's ship is a WW1-style biplane?
I can't think of any besides the venerable Flying Shark, 1943 Kai, and the Swordfish ship piloted by "Captain Uncle" in the well-known hori, the name of which escapes me.
I know the setting/era/ship isn't supposed to matter, and for gameplay purposes it doesn't. I'm just asking.

Fire Shark and either 1943 or 1943 Kai used biplanes, as well as Sky Shark/Flying Shark/Hishou Zame, all 3 of these games are quite good, even if Flying Shark is a bit on the harsh side with all those fast enemy bullets.

Biplanes have one wing above the other, usually the top one being a parasol wing (i.e. above a cockpit, and usually a semi-open one at that).
Triplanes have three wings, and are pretty funky looking. I wonder how many are in shmups? I imagine these were made for extra durability.
Monoplanes have just two main wings, one on each side of the fuselage. This is the common kind used in modern aircraft.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. Can't be but maybe a handful I would think. Probably more of an uncommon than anything.Ed Oscuro wrote:Biplanes have one wing above the other, usually the top one being a parasol wing (i.e. above a cockpit, and usually a semi-open one at that).

Spaceships (monoplanes designed for operation in space and atmospheres apparently!) are futureproof, whereas biplanes are retrocool...seems pretty reasonable to me.
Now, I bet there's some triplane in a shmup out there, given how crazy the design is. Somebody's done it, I'm sure. If they haven't, they should be ashamed.

Bomber Raid on the Master System (despite the cover depicting an SR-71…dropping…bombs…)

Re: shmups featuring biplanes
Since a lot of people don't seem to be familiar, this is a biplane:

They're World War I era fighters so named for the dual set of wings.

Bomber Raid is a dual engine two propeller WWII-era fighter.

Or a stealth bomber, if the Western box is is to be believed.

It can be hard to tell the difference with all that two-mega power blasting around.

Ghost Pilots is a WWII era fighter with pontoons.

Yeah I edited the Ghost Pilots one out after I rewatched it (nice catch!) but I coulda sworn the in-game sprite for Bomber Raid was an actual biplane. I yield!
Re: shmups featuring biplanes
I wonder if they went with the Ghost Pilots seaplane just so they could have one of the most haunting Game Over screens known to man ;w;7
