shmups featuring biplanes

Post by escadrille »

Can anybody think of any shmups where the player's ship is a WW1-style biplane?

I can't think of any besides the venerable Flying Shark, 1943 Kai, and the Swordfish ship piloted by "Captain Uncle" in the well-known hori, the name of which escapes me.

I know the setting/era/ship isn't supposed to matter, and for gameplay purposes it doesn't. I'm just asking.

Progear has one hasn't it?

Edited to add: Sky Adventure and Tokio/Scramble Formation, though I'm not a hundred percent certain about that last one.

I used to love shmups for their settings and very detailed backgrounds and Sky Adventure was one of my favourites back then.

Fire Shark and either 1943 or 1943 Kai used biplanes, as well as Sky Shark/Flying Shark/Hishou Zame, all 3 of these games are quite good, even if Flying Shark is a bit on the harsh side with all those fast enemy bullets. :)

Prehistoric Isle.

Aero Fighters 3.

I also want to say Steel Empire; it isn't actually a biplane, but seems to be some imaginative alternate-world equivalent like the craft from Progear. You can be a zeppelin too for more WWI goodness.

Combat (Atari 2600), though that's a versus arena shooter.

Strikers 1945 series uses Biplanes if I recall.

No biplanes in Strikers 1945.

Biplanes have appeared as enemies in Capcom's 1943 and Sky Soldier.

Bah, shows what I know - I know damn near nothing about planes.

Biplanes have one wing above the other, usually the top one being a parasol wing (i.e. above a cockpit, and usually a semi-open one at that).
Triplanes have three wings, and are pretty funky looking. I wonder how many are in shmups? I imagine these were made for extra durability.
Monoplanes have just two main wings, one on each side of the fuselage. This is the common kind used in modern aircraft.

The Hammer Shark in Bakraid is a biplane, though it looks a little more modern than WW1.

Aha, and it also makes its appearance in BATWIDER.

Toaplan games like the biplanes, both for player and enemies (Flying and Fire Shark).

Ah, thanks for clarifying. Can't be but maybe a handful I would think. Probably more of an uncommon than anything.

Triplanes or biplanes? Biplanes are pretty common in shmupz due to the historicity / novelty factors.

Ah sorry, didn't clarify - Triplanes.

However given what you say, Mono as well. I would have expected the Mono ones to be much more dominant in shooters.

Spaceships (monoplanes designed for operation in space and atmospheres apparently!) are futureproof, whereas biplanes are retrocool...seems pretty reasonable to me.

Now, I bet there's some triplane in a shmup out there, given how crazy the design is. Somebody's done it, I'm sure. If they haven't, they should be ashamed.

Flying Shark was always one of my favourites. I finally managed to complete the first loop. No chance on the 2nd though.

Ed, I hadn't even thought of triplanes!

Couple of people have mentioned this one. I saw the ad when it came out in a Gamepro or EGM or something and thought it looked cool. Finally played it years later via emulation. Fun little game.

Since a lot of people don't seem to be familiar, this is a biplane:

They're World War I era fighters so named for the dual set of wings.
SavagePencil wrote: Sat Aug 24, 2024 4:49 am Ghost Pilots

Bomber Raid
Ghost Pilots is a WWII era fighter with pontoons.

Bomber Raid is a dual engine two propeller WWII-era fighter.

Or a stealth bomber, if the Western box is is to be believed.

It can be hard to tell the difference with all that two-mega power blasting around.

Yeah I edited the Ghost Pilots one out after I rewatched it (nice catch!) but I coulda sworn the in-game sprite for Bomber Raid was an actual biplane. I yield!

I wonder if they went with the Ghost Pilots seaplane just so they could have one of the most haunting Game Over screens known to man ;w;7

(early Neo has some consistently killer Attract/Overs )
