Monokey free pc shmups

Post by poodude »

I happened upon quite a few little pc shmup gems from an indie coding group called Monokey.

http://www.daikenkai.com/mygames/

They're all free for download and have pretty fun game play with unique bullet patterns.

Force Majeure looks a bit Metal Slugish! I'll try that one out.

Edit: It's not done, and seeing how the forum has been inactive since February I have high doubts it will be finished.

I tried Force Majeure. Ugh. Programmer is in love with shot patterns that you can't really pass through .. and curvy bullets that curve right into your ship. On top of that your ship is slow, so it's hard to get out of the way when a bullet changes course. Your hit area isn't exactly tiny either. It's not huge, but not bullet hell small either.

Also your wide shot, which you have to tap to use, is frustratingly hard to get a decent shot rate out of. I felt like I had to use autofire.

Other things : When you die, even while your ship is still temporarily invincible, the enemies keep firing at you. In most other shmups, they don't start firing until your invincibility period is gone. Makes it way harder to recover after a death.

Also pressing 'Fire' on the continue screen continues. All I can say is .. lol.

After killing the first boss it said "Full version coming in Winter 2007!". Yeah.

I was frustrated more than anything .. nice graphics and music though.

Tried Blessed .. it's actually way better and has a cool shield/counterattack system. Only complaint is by default button 2 is the 'exit game' menu, and button 3 is the shield button. WTF??

I'd reccomend Blessed, and reconfigure the controls before you start playing. Oh, and watch the tutorial. :P

Edit: Loveless is kinda cool too, but a bit easy .. also for some reason you only get one life, maybe that's because I put it on EXTREEEEEME mode? :O

The bullet patterns in Force Majeure is no doubt a bit inspired by a certain hori from Cave. I don't think they are as undodgeable as they are undynamic. The creator is showing his Amiga roots to clearly... 8)

Nice graphics of course. There's several Swedes that make good, old fashioned pixel graphics. I would wich for one of them to try and take pixel graphics into the 21 century instead of 'just' being retro.

I would be surprised if the creator isn't a member here. Therefore I have one suggestion:

Code: Select all

playerspeed=playerspeed+2
It is powerup of laser.

They've been pretty quiet lately, which is a shame. I happen to like Force Majeure quite a bit, shows considerable promise.

I know the thread is a bit old and all, but what the hell...

We're well aware of the the few quirks, and the release date.
As some of you know, this was just a demo, or more like a quick mash-up, to get something to show for the autofire 2k7 compo (which we placed third in I believe). The final game (which we have every intention of finish) will probably not feature this stage, enemy-patterns or bullet patterns.

And yeah, winter 2007 was WAY to optimistic. Sadly all of us have fulltime jobs (me as a programmer, artist as an artist etc.) so sometimes it can be a bit hard to do the exact thing at home that you deal with at work all day long :)

But as I said, we DO have every intention of completing this game. And when we do it's gonna kick ass.

Also, thanks for commenting on Blessed, which I myself think is a very 'complete' game. (Far more complete than most indie shoot'em ups.)

EDIT:
also our page is down at the moment( http://www.daikenkai.com/monokey/ ) since I had to reinstall the server. But it will be up when we got something to actually put there. For now the games can be found at:

Every time I open this thread I find myself again disappointed at the lack of shmups extolling the virtues of white supremacy. :(
