As someone with zero experience with this series, what would be a good one to try out in MAME?
KoF 98 is what you are looking for. As for the video, it is very very nice. Looks like the SNK fans are going to get exactly what they've been waiting a decade for.
It's true, I never thought this day would come. After losing their way from 98 onward, I didn't think we'd ever be blessed with a KOF like this.

I'm so pumped for this game it's unreal! :D

Oh it should be mentioned that this game is getting an american release some time around April. Probably will be delayed but SNKP made it pretty clear that it will happen. Their is also heavy talk of a U.S loketest, their was a thread on SRK discussing how far people where willing to drive to play the game. SNK will base where on these suggestions. Chicago and SolCal seem the most likely but New York New York is still possible

Edit:U.S X-Box360 release, maybe PS3

Is there any chance of a PS2 release?
It may not matter to me, because I'm thinking of getting a 360 [and this is making me want one more], but still.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I don't have a 360 or ps3, but I'll pre-order whichever version comes first to show my support.

Yeah, it's unlikely. I won't use the i-word (cf. Odin Sphere), but I think getting it on there without butchering it would be a struggle at best (cf. Odin Sphere's load times and slowdown ;)).

i noticed the zoom in and out when they move away and close in on each other. looks slick I hope there is a few more characters on the rota when it launches but then I imagine once they have the first game out on the engine it will be 2010, 2011 all over again :D which is fine by me

KOF 2000 is the best thing SNK has ever created. One would have to suffer from sheer '98 fanboy blindness not to admit that.

Well, helloooo? Last Blade series, anyone?! :P

But still, this looks FUCKIN AWESOMENESS ON NUCLEAR STEROIDS. Seems they learned a very important lesson... got a successful series with millions of fans? Don't crap on it. Don't turn it into completely different things. Take what fans love, and refine it into perfection.

Hello, Sega... are you listening, you idiots?!

I disagree with you.

KOF is no where near as good as the Last Blade series and Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Hell, I wouldn't put it that far above Power Instinct: Matrimelee.

In terms of KOF games, I thought 2002, '98, and '96(lol ancient) were more fun. And '99 looked and sounded leagues better than 2000.

But this is just my opinion, though.

Oh lol. I knew lots of people would disagree... at least you guys were polite instead of the usual 98fanboynerdrage "I HAET STRIKAAAAAAAAARZ" i'm used to seeing whenever I bring up this topic.

I'm a huge fan of LB and Garou myself, but KoF 2000 is still better than these games in my book (it's the only game in the KoF series I like that much, mind you).

I just get pissed off by people that associate 2000 with the crapfest that came after it, and with '99, that was destined to get all the hate from '98 fans from the start anyway. It's just so much better than people make it out to be. But it seems some people (MANY people, actually) love to think SNK ended two years earlier, and refuse to see what's right in front of their faces.

2000 had an outstanding soundtrack, the best character designs/portraits in the series, lots of awesome new characters (come on, who doesn't like Vanessa? ) and a bunch of interesting little tweaks and details such as the background changing color when you use a SDM. That's not to mention almost as many characters as '98 and a story that was developing in an interesting way, unlike Orochi's saga and its sheer ridiculousness. Oh God, I'm SO going to be killed for this.

Anyone can disagree that it's the best in the series, but comparing it to its shitty sequels or just insisting that it isn't average at worst is unacceptable. >_>

The best one I've played is '99 Evolution, because of the 3D backgrounds. Somehow they really fit together with the 2D characters, unlike MvC2 or CvS2.

99 Evolution, because of the 3D backgrounds

only on the DC version. I really did not enjoy that at all. I have a nice clean MVS cart of that but i play 03 more. I play 98 even more than that but its not mine. Need to pick up 98 and 2002 at some point. Ultimate match would be nice :-)

XBL soon enough though

There are a few entries in the series I just can't stand (namely '97 for having no music and 2001 for always being associated to 2000 by retards >_>) but they're still better than most shit of the same genre.
jpj wrote:but then i play K' so ... :P

K' is one of the reasons I usually prefer post-99 KoFs. But the older ones have Kensou, Ryo and Yuri so I'm fine with them. :P

yeah! 8) K' is just pure bad-ass

i would probably agree with you, but i did like orochi iori with the blood red screen :D

96 has the best music, 99 the best backgrounds (better than even LB if you ask me), 2002 has the best gameplay, and 2003 i enjoy because it has the best 1P experience (cutting back on a lot of the annoying old chars, and each match being one round of fast-paced 3-on-3).

as for milking licences, why the fuck else would playmore buy their IPs...!?

XII looks like it will be the shit ... i just wish this was the style capcom had chosen for sf4

Ok, for me... In order of excellence...
XI [it's like 2k3, but with more awesome]
2003 [awesome]
`97 [my fav, until `03 came out, had a really cool atmosphere, and it had EXTRA mode, which I like more than ADVANCED, which seems to be the norm now...]
`96 [excellent]
2000 [pretty good, but not very]
`98 [never liked it too much]

I hate `94, never played 2001 or 2002, and `99 wasn't that good. Also, `95 wasn't that good.

[edit Typo!]

in my eyes Power Instinct: Matrimelee. is just ok. Its good but its not great.
KOF was releasing games year in year out and all of them were better than PI:M

Last blade is a love or hate thing. For me the parry button just adds some dynamics which are in no other 2D fighter. its set in a time period which is unusual if you think about it. The characters are fantastic each one is well designed and very playable. pretty much all killer no filler.

I appreciate that this is going to come down to an each to their own thing. I love Last Blade - the graphics are sumptuous and it plays very well, although I'd still put Shin Samurai ahead in gameplay.

PI borrows KOF's engine, and also plays well - but it's limited and the balance and speed is off.

Still, when a thread finds ways to produce comments such as this:
Oh lol. I knew lots of people would disagree... at least you guys were polite instead of the usual 98fanboynerdrage "I HAET STRIKAAAAAAAAARZ" i'm used to seeing whenever I bring up this topic.
You know you're as good as beat.

98fanboynerdrage is a term that only someone who can't actually play King of Fighters would come up with.

Haha, I knew someone would eventually come with the "you can't play" argument. Oh well.

And just for the record, no statement is as dumb as "SNK lost their way after '98". THIS is truly something only someone who can't play any KOF after 98 would say.

Not ridiculous. What's ridiculous is someone who hates 98 because the majority hails it as the series pinnacle. If you actually dislike 98, regardless of which iteration you deem best, then I'd have to draw the conclusion that you don't really understand KOF - not out of spite, just out of an observation of your comments.

People don't have contempt for the striker system for no reason - they dislike it because it upsets the balance of a finely honed game. Nor SNK or Playmore managed to effectively implement strikers throughout the series. In fact it was three years until 2002 at which point they smartly got rid, and suddenly it was the biggest success for KOF in years.

And 2K2 plays almost identically to 98. Go figure.

First of all - not everyone hates the striker system. Only people who, as I said, are BLIND, and ditch two WONDERFUL fighting games with pretty much everything that made the series so popular in the first place (99 and 2000)... just because of ONE attempt at innovation. If you don't like using strikers, for Christ's sake, just TURN THEM OFF or DON'T USE THEM or whatever, but from there to saying those two KoFs suck...? Aren't you and every other NESTS-hater being a bit, no, a LOT unfair?

KOF isn't made only of gameplay and strikers (or the absence of them). They're made of graphics, music, characters, personality, feeling, and 99 and 2000 have all of this. You can tell SNK put a lot of LOVE into these two games, while trying to add something new to not let them feel like a 98 rehash - a something that wasn't quite well received, but whatever. Yet I'm yet to see ONE person who hates 99 and 2000 for their graphics, music, characters, personality or feeling, and not because either "strikers suck" or "I'm nostalgic and hardcore, so I deem anything post-98 shit and unplayable".

Damn, these games are great the way they are, and even if you still can't bring yourself to like them, why not leave those who DO like them alone? No offense, but your comment that SNK lost their way after 98 was totally unnecessary, upsetting and is the one comment that pisses me off the most because I see it EVERYWHERE whenever KoF is the topic. >_>
