"I don't seem to recall asking or caring about your opinion on this matter. I keep that stuff in check most of the time in other people's threads out of respect for the author, but in my own threads I think I can say what the hell I want. If you have a problem with that, then stay the fuck out of my threads."

Riiight, like you and everyone else on here do with mine!

You've got major issues if you think that someone voicing an alternate opinion in one of your threads means that they have a problem with you writing what you want in threads you start. I never said or even implied as much.

And I don't care if you "asked" for my opinion; you don't own this site, and I, as much as anyone else on here, have the right to voice my opinion in whatever thread is on this site-as long as I am not personally insulting, which I was not to you, and as long as I stay on topic-which I did, since you mentioned Sony as one of the pervayors of MMORPGS.

so that´s the new way of saying "lalala... I can´t hear you". And a great concept for interesting discussions: each thread poster determines which opinions may be voiced in his thread? Might as well start talking to a wall, then. Oh, and btw. SONY RULES.
No, thats just my way of telling people to cease trolling my threads and bitching at me about stuff that the topic isn't even about.
Ah sorry JP, I wasn't trolling, JUST voicing an opinion-there is a difference. I didn't cuss you out, call you names, or tell you that I hate you.

So it doesn't have anything to do with the topic, when you wrote:

"it still pisses me off that Satan (or Sony, whichever) has suckered so many people into paying $10 a month to hang out in an over glorified chatroom!"

All I did was defend Sony, NOT MMORPGs, which I hate as much as you do. I too have watched a college friend spend "exciting time" mining rock  , and I'd personally rather watch grass grow.

benstylus pretty much summed up my feelings on the genre.

The games are not crap. The people who devote their entire lives to playing them are though. The only way I get to talk to my brother now is through WoW.

But the the game is fun. If it wasn't then I wouldn't fucking play it, would I.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

Lately, I've been playing a LOT of World of Warcraft. This is the first MMO I've really gotten into since Asheron's Call.

I really really tried to avoid playing, because I know how addictive an MMO can be, but two of my friends kept bugging me to play and I finally gave in. Now, four months later, I've outlevelled them both.

You know, it's pretty strange. These days I rarely play games that take up much time at all, and I tend to stick with 2D fighters, shmups, and driving/racing games; Titles that I can play for little bits at a time. Then I play something like WoW which can take up hours and hours in a single session. *shrug*

I had never played an MMORPG before WoW, but a coworker told me about it, I got curious, and picked it up. It was interesting for about a month, playing an hour or two every other day. Then it got to the point where I'd need to sink 6 hours to gain a level, so I stopped playing. Artificially increasing the time needed to do something to lengthen the amount of time people have to spend playing the game is great from a business standpoint, but it's horrible from any other perspective.

Then I decided to pick up Guild Wars, and have realized two things. One, Guild wars takes care of 90 per cent of the problems that I had with WoW, in that it has a persistent story, wait times are greatly decreased, healing is very fast, level ups occur rapidly, etc. Second, it made me realize that I don't really care for these games. I won't rag on everyone who does like them, I'm just saying that I'd much rather play some faster, more action oriented games. Like shmups, or platformers.

But I do have to agree that it does become a problem when someone sinks 6+ hours of time every day into a game. That's sad. My coworker's brother spends upwards of 8 hours a day playing Everquest, and it's nasty. He met a girlfriend through the game, and is driving 16 hours to see her this summer. It's kind of sad that they've never even spoken outside of the in-game chat. Anyway, sorry if that got a bit off-topic.

You know, a few days a go a co-worker of mine was talking about WoW, but it seems he still manages to get out and do shit. I guess my main problem is with people who vanish into every single MMO they find. Granted, I still don't see the point in them and I still find them incredibly boring, but if someone can still manage to maintain their responsibilities and doesn't let the game eat their life... then I really don't care what they play. Its just this whole "Where has so-and-so gone?" thing that bothers me. And the whole "Lets sit around talking about boring shit!" Meh.

So when it's a video gaming activity that YOU want to participate in it's okay, but when it's something you don't like it's not okay. Hypocritical bullshit.
Wow, you're a fucking moron with no reading comprehension apparently. Every activity I listed is something people can go out and do together. I don't give a fuck if its Twinkle Star Sprites or going to a movie or just chillin'... anything beats sitting on someone's bed watching them wait... and wait... and wait... and wait... and wait... ad nauseum. It'd be like me sitting next to a friend in front of his computer watching him chat on AIM, only in this instance monsters and graphics are involved.

so why did you mention it, then?
Because Sony made EQ and I felt like it? It was an offhand comment and had nothing to do with anything.

You've got major issues if you think that someone voicing an alternate opinion in one of your threads means that they have a problem with you writing what you want in threads you start. I never said or even implied as much.

No, you didn't. You went off on some tangent about Sony and my feelings towards them, which has nothing to do with this thread. I don't dislike MMOs because Sony makes one, I dislike MMOs because thus far, almost every single person I've known that plays them vanishes into them for 6 months and refuses to do anything or talk about anything outside of them. And I was just trying to wrap my mind around WHY someone would do that. Mind you, some people have had helpful responses (sethsez, Speci, benstylus, etc.). But you and black mariah aren't contributing jack shit to the topic at hand, you're both just going off on personal tangents which is quite pointless (though you're being a lot less of a complete dumbass about it than black mariah, I can at least see why you would do what you're doing, even if it is annoying as hell).

Ah sorry JP, I wasn't trolling, JUST voicing an opinion-there is a difference. I didn't cuss you out, call you names, or tell you that I hate you.

Seeing as how this thread isn't even really about Sony, and Sony is only involved with one minor aspect of it... no... no Sony isn't a topic in this thread.

jp, how are these people ruining your social life, when you've posted almost 600 times in this forum  ?

also, you mention playing D&D. i don't know a thing about D&D or MMORPGs, but aren't they similar in character building/storyline progression. some people like to do it with hundreds of thousands of people all over the world, others, like you, like to do it with people who live in their community.

go ahead, use a lot of cursing to get your point across and to call me an idiot or whatever you want, i'm gonna go play ps2.
say, by the way...

and in the meantime, it's gone away....

Because I post here from work? I have no problem chillin' on a message board and posting if I'm getting paid $12 an hour to do it.

Difference:
One involves one person sitting alone at a computer with virtual people.

The other involves several people sitting around, hanging out, eating pizza, drinking coke, and is just a fun time. Now I'm sure someone can bring up LAN parties and the like, but for the most part those are fairly rare...
go ahead, use a lot of cursing to get your point across and to call me an idiot or whatever you want, i'm gonna go play ps2.
I only do that when someone is getting way off topic or is trying to be a jackass, if someone has a valid response then I don't think I need to diss them or whatever. But hey, if you've absolutely gotta be in the latter category...

FUCK YOU. The only goddamned reason you're bitching is because you don't like playing MMORPG's. How do you think all your non-shmupper friends feel sitting there watching you run around the screen, blowing shit up. I mean, where the GAMEPLAY? Fucking SPACE INVADERS was this in-depth!

You're talking about shit you are apparently too fucking stupid to understand. My point is ENTIRELY relevant. Namely, you're nothing but a hypocritical fucking cuntrag that sees HIS choice of games as just fine, while other people's are all shit. Again, FUCK YOU. Fuck you and every cocksucking fucker like you. If you don't like talking to your friends about the shit they play, DON'T FUCKING DO IT. If you don't like playing the games they play, DON'T FUCKING DO IT. But don't come in here acting like you're fucking better than them because you don't play MMORPG's and they do.

Something tells me you're one of those assholes that's fond of the term 'sheeple'.

Cry me a river. Yeah, this thread started out with me dissing and bitching about the lack of gameplay, but due to people actually pointing out WHY people play these games, if you would have fucking READ (if you're capable) you would have seen that I eventually wrote the whole thing off as a few bad experiences and that I was overall wrong in dissing MMOs from the get-go.

This has nothing to do with "my choice of games". I've even stated in this fucking thread that I don't go about letting my personal choice of games consume all of my fucking time (just my money, heh), which is the only problem I had with MMOs to begin with.

As for how my "non-shmupper" friends feel about watching me, to do that they have to walk into my frickin' room while I'm doing it, and more times than not they apparently enjoy it a bit since unlike you I can actually 1CC some shit. But personally, if someone comes by to hang out or something I'm not going to sit there and play a fucking videogame unless they just really want to see it or something (which has happened, my old roomate wanted to see me 1CC Ikaruga, so I did. Then he wanted to see me play Mars Matrix, so I did. Then he wanted to see Radiant Silvergun, so I showed him).

Now take whatever crawled in your ass out and go cry in a corner or something. And afterwards, learn to read entire threads before pulling the whiney bitch card.

I'm NOT contributing anything-I wrote this:

"And let's not forget about the fact that there are plenty of people out there who let other types of games-INCLUDING shmups-completely suck up their lives. It's all about balance and discipline, and IMO, it's the increasing lack of these qualities that will ultimately destroy this country."

I would call that a contribution, wouldn't you?

JP, I value your presence on this board; you contribute a great deal to it-not the least of which is your great sense of humor- (and I don't say that sarcastically), I just got way too defensive about Sony, and I apologize.

"You know, a few days a go a co-worker of mine was talking about WoW, but it seems he still manages to get out and do shit. I totally agree; it's not necessarily even the type of game, it's when people let it suck up their lives that it becomes a really negative influence.

You know, there was a thread on this site not to long ago about what makes life worth living. To me games are wonderful, but ulitmately, IMO, it's things like Faith, Family, and Friends that make life worth living.

Afterall, whatever games we enjoy we didn't bring into this world, and we sure as heck ain't gonna take 'em out, either.

No harm done man. :?

And I agree with your rebuke TF, but when you allow cussing on a gaming forum in the first place, it tends to get out of hand rather quickly-and this isn't the first thread on this site where it has.

To provide some clarity:

Harsh language is allowed on Shmups Forum because sensible people are able to use harsh language in different contexts without necessarily directing it at fellow forum members. This is a distinction that forums like GameFAQs don't make. Here it's when language is used abusively towards others that it becomes a moddable violation, and then it is taken seriously. Repeat offences from individual users are monitored by mods, and can lead to warnings which when not heeded leads to termination of forum membership.

If you ask me it's like many different human activities - okay in moderation, but harmful when out of control - like alcohol, etc.

Oh yeah, and since when did a thread starter "own" a thread more than other posters? Did you stake a virtual claim in the land of cyberspace or something, and nobody else can touch it?

Don't know if you could consider Midnight Club 3's online mode MMO, but alot of people there don't really race, all they do are cruises (basically just freeroam). Basically, it's a chat room that you can drive a lowrider, pimped out SUV, rice rocket, or fast expensive extoic. Most of the time, people are doing donuts, or bouncing with their lowriders, or simply crashing into each other. Not to say it isn't fun, as who doesn't like to screw around and check out each others' rides, but dammit, I like to race too.
