My dream is that they do a really good remake of R-Type, with everything being nastier and awesomer, with some new levels. The closest thing that's ever happened like that is Pulstar. I'd go for something like that in HD but of course with sprites not overly smooth FLASH-like graphics.

Yay, sideways pinball angle!

I want a shmup with a viewing angle that constantly tilts around in all directions.

There is. It can even be toggled on the fly without even pausing the game I think.

I think it looks horrible like that too, but the un-tilted versin with the new graphics looks good.

Developers had to reverse engineer the original game for the update.

They ´re making 2d-shmup 3D.

What will be next ?

The "Mona Lisa" updated in 3D. Britney Spears singing songs from
"Nirvana". "Citizen Kane" in full color. The Pope in a porn movie. ??

That's just one mode, and the leaderboard for that mode will be ranked on who died the least number of times. Sounds like a cool addition to me. I'll bet there aren't many who can complete the original round these parts, never mind anywhere else.

What's next? A mode where enemies don't shoot at you, and bosses blow up as soon as they appear? I wonder what they'll call that, It's-not-your-fault-you-suck mode?

Already done in the PS2 port of DDP DOJ (fittingly named No Bullet Mode).

There have been no-bullet modes in a Cave game you know.

*edit* as Kiken says

You just had to ruin my bad joke didn't you?

But, the leader board being based on how many times you died doesn't sound too great to me.

to me as well, don't worry. While I *was* able to complete R-Type 1+2 on 1CC in the early 90s I now have a hard time getting past level 4 on R-Type 1. I appreciate this new mode, I just thought it sounded incredibly funny especially when mentioned with casual gaming :)

Don't see the problem with it. Different mode of score attack. Can be useful to learn levels for the real game/high score.

Funny, there was a topic on this board from when R-Type Final came out with one (or maybe more...) poster saying he only played with invincibility on. Whoever they roped into recording the game footage sure needed it, what with being killed multiple times by Dobkeratops. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was to show off the new system.

The fading between sprites and polygons looks really cool. I don't know of any other game with an effect like that.

Exactly.

It might be the lower resolution of the footage but I must say the "new" graphics look much better now than they did in the trailer. The slight softness really fits the game.
Also, 2 player is a neat addition tough I wish they would have added a replay/recording function. Looks very promising so far :D

The new footage of R-Type Dimensions from the interview looks amazing. The new artwork looks REALLY good. I am so hyped up for this release.

I dunno, sometimes i wish people could learn to appreciate stuff better. This game isn't even out and a good chunk of this forum is bashing something that is just... well, awesome. We get a new R-Type!
Yes I agree R-Type Dimensions do indeed look alot like the old artwork for the old games.

Check out the entrance to the BYDO base as it shifts from original graphics to new graphics with all the new detail which really fleshes out the base, combined with new perspective, @ the 0:18 mark.

This is the 'best-case' for why the new graphics and new perspective actually seem work to a good effect, IMO. I don't know if anyone agrees, but for those that might, you probably won't think so from any other footage or screenshot, except that part. I was skeptical myself about the new graphics and especially the new perspective, but that part blew me away and convinced me it might work

I don't know how good it will seem while actually playing, but I'm tring to be optimistic. I mean, anyone that doesn't like it can just play with original graphics. We've been doing that for 21 years from arcade release to various console/computer ports and emulation. It's TIME for something more, something new added to the old R-Type ^__^

Don't take this as a criticism of the (optional) 3d graphics, but as an aside it's interesting to see how they start to look more like sprite graphics if you lower the resolution.

DAY ONE
I have no problem with them remaking a game into 3D, but this looks goofy. At least you have the original 2 on there! That's worth the cash.

The problem with the 3d graphics is that there are no curves, only straight lines. With a game as organic looking (in parts) as R-Type this will be a problem.
