I mean, it's a constant that you'll get shot offscreen and you have to blindly aim to take those enemies down before they even freaking appear!!! WTF.
This is what I like to call an Amerishmup. Star wars, 'realism' and multi-directional scrolling/shooting. I guess the offscreen firing of the enemies is supposed to enhance the realism part. It's a mechanic that could work if there was either some consistency to the enemy patterns, turning into a memorizer, or else a radar or some other visual que to show incoming enemies. I have to say that watching that youtube video, the game looks a little bit fun. I like the fast shots of the enemies (part of the realism, no doubt). Of course, most games will look fun on youtube.
The game has precisely what you mentioned: a radar indicates you where the enemies are coming from, the inertia can be countered with a special item and you also get an invincibility item. Enemies tend to give you a 1-2 sec pause when they go offscreen before coming back and usually fire to indicate where they are coming from.

It's a heavy memoriser indeed. I beat it through pure memory and timing the shots of the blue laser (next to the Naxter, that's probably the best weapon).

Protöthea has quite doses of realism (the inertia comes from the whole "you are piloting a test prototype") to the point bullets ARE bullets, not some huge blobs or heart-shaped bullets so you only see fast lines coming and eating your armor. This is where the "bullet time" mode comes handy and becomes a must.

I bought it to support my local developers. I mean, an stg from Argentina! You know you saw it all when, in a place like this with the most unfriendly ambience for a game dev, a team manages to release a game that isn't a crappy educational/flash/cellphone thing.

I'm getting too offtopic, so I'll stop it there =P

ZOM> That was my reaction after reaching Chapter 3. The last two chapters are full of mean moments but are the best despite being so damn hard.

...

I think I should review the PC version sooner or later.

Eight Forces. Your gun is barely a pea-shooter, even your bombs can't kill anything. Then when you lose all your lives, they try to get you to continue by saying things like, "What did I had done! Give me more power!", or "This sucks!". That's all they got right.
“What did I had done!”

The worse shooter that I ever played was Looping. It came out in the 1983 on the Colecovision. It had great graphics (for it's time) which pulled in a lot of kids. But the gameplay was horrible. Sad.

cant nail down the worst shooter ever, but the one i was most disappointed with was radiant silvergun

after all the hype and anticipation, when i finally played it i was not at all impressed......

similar feeling for ikaruga, although not as severe

but at this point pretty much anything BUT cave and toaplan stuff bores me when it comes to shmups

Ibara

It has Ikaruga-esque memorization with rank and impossible (I don't use this term often) patterns which the game expects you to bomb er I mean ICE HADOUKEN through. It breaks the CAVE dodging tradition and focuses specifically on mass bombing which is completely retarded. I used to think that this game was a parody of Battle Garegga, until I saw a superplay and realized that they were trying for real.

I like Deep Blue.

Worst game I can think of to play:

XDR
Divine Sealing

These junk are on the Mega Drive. XDR just feel real plastic. I cannot like it… the presentation is poor quality. Divine Sealing is even worse. I think I can make better shooter tomorrow and I have no skill and talent to make a game. A horrible game trying to cash in on nudity

As a child I bought Deep Blue brand new for $49.99 and squeezed every drop of fun from it. I got good I could get to stage 4 until I took many hits and would just die
HINT: The regular qun powered up is the best weapon. The other weapons are just gimmicks. Speed up also make it more manageable.

Another vote for Sol Divide. This is the worst shooter I've ever played in my life. It tops Deep Blue, Xenon 2 (MD) and Divine Sealing by a mile.

I have Legion, but I haven't played it seriously yet.
I don't like shmups that have no scoring, the last one i finished was Kolibri.

It's not that bad. Just pretty bland and mediocre, but not some unplayable mess.

Worst? I generally don't play any particularly bad games without knowing beforehand; if I do, it's to see for myself just how bad the game is.

That said, I'll nominate the R-Type III GBA port. Awful music, bad collision detection, and screwed scoring. I played that expecting a straight port of an SNES favorite — it was only after reading this board when I found out that its developers at Raylight Studios apparently didn't get the necessary code to make a proper port.

Blandest shooter I've seen in a while. My favorite part is how bored the Mission 1 boss looks when it's attacking.

without a doubt it has to be Silver Surfer on the NES. The gameplay was so horrid. one of the levels comprised of shooting rubber ducks and some sort of alligator/lizard things. It was one of those shmups that had walls that would instant kill you if you touched them. i normally wouldn't mind that in a shmup, but when you have the biggest hit box ever it just bad. It also doesn't make sense that silver surfer die from barely grazing the end of a wall, or rubber duck for that matter.

Bad shmups I can ( wasn´t able to forget them  )
remember:

Earth defense on the genesis : for people who might like a
bad master-system-game on the Genesis. Don´t want to
loose more words or time on this.

Divine sealing : better spend your money in real or in anime-porn
than in this Genesis-game.

XDR migth also not get much love ( and right so ) - but this
poor-peoples-Gradius is at least playable - so I actually spend some
time with this game - but surely some years will pass before I have
to play it again.

Planet Joker on the Saturn: I would prefer the worst shmup on
the Atari 2600 before playing this polygon-... dirt again.

X2 - european-version on the PS1. : who were the .... people who
tested this game - good graphics, good technique - but absolutely not
playable. It feels like you have to shoot each enemy for your minute
before he explodes ( and often the screen is full of them).
Many years ago I played throught the hole game ( cheat - of course )
thinking it must get better in later stages. It wasn´t so.

My vote goes to Viewpoint on the PS1. I had such high hopes when this game came to the Playstation after passing on other versions. The game is so unkind, you go about 5 feet until you end up dying. I finally picked it up very cheap in all its long box glory a few years ago, only to realize how crappy it is.

Planet Smashers for the 7800. Maybe not the worst, but close. Definitely the worst in recent memory. How bad you ask? Well, you can find out with your very own copy...

When compared to the other GigaWings, Generations is indeed mediocre.
Fist GigaWing is the best. If it weren't for the crappy music, GW 2 would be in the same rank.

I always liked the music; pretty epic. Now those polygons are another story.

Wow...that looks even more generic than Rayging Blue's character design, more uninspired than a random Naruto fanartist on DeviantArt, and has as much life in it as Pluto.

I was thinking "at least it has fast bullets", then I noticed that most of it was coming off screen; and the radar will only show you stuff that's already in you field of view, [sarcasm]how useful[/sarcasm].

I know what I'm not buying...assuming my poor ass can buy anything game related for a while.

On-Topic:

Probably Chaos Field. It grew on me a little bit after playing it for a while, but I couldn't say it was really any good.

I don't know about worse, but Chaos Field and Sol Divide should be mentioned, oh and Raiden 3 PS2 while not all that bad, wasn't great either.
Zweihander wrote: 2. Shienryu Explosion
Is Shienryu really that bad? I was thinking of getting it either off the PSN store or buying the EU version.

Shienryu isn't bad, he's talking about Shienryu Explosion, which is on the PS2.
