homemade LCD cab designs

Post by Dave_K. »

I've been thinking about homemade LCD cabinet designs for some time, having bought a nice 37" LCDTV with removable speakers, that has a high enough refresh rate for shmups. And a few weeks ago I came across this interesting public coin-op PC kiosk setup at a local mall. The design is very similar to a sitdown cab, uses an LCD screen and a money/card type payment system. Of course the initial design doesn't support vertical displays, but would be interesting to talk to them on how much the shell units cost and if if could be modified for vertical screens and deeper control panel.

Their homepage is http://quick-pc.com/ although it doesn't have anything more than contact info and "coming soon".

You should be able to build one for butt cheap. The great part, IMO, is that it will weigh about 100lbs less than your standard 29" CRT cab :D

A few of the newest arcade game cabinets at my local Funworks utilize such widescreen LCD monitor setups but is of the yoko variety -- very nice setup and the graphics are presented in HD. Is considered the wave of the future and doing away with traditional bulky CRT-based arcade monitors nowdays. ^_~

correct me if I'm wrong but would a 16:9 wide screen LCD on it's side be insanely too long for TATE games? cool design idea though.

Yeah, I've been meaning to do this, but lack the time (and tools). Would be nice to cannibalize the quick-pc thing above, since its largely what I'd want, and its all metal construction.

I got the Sceptre X37 HD LCDTV (1080p), which is actually a few years old model wise. Last summer these were on newegg for $799 liquidation price, and sold out in under a month.

That is assuming you are stretching the 3:4 resolution to 9:16. But arcade lcd cabs like the vewlix simply render the 3:4 image in the middle of the screen, with black bars on the top and bottom. It may not look pretty, but until we see real 9:16 vertical arcade games, it will have to do. They don't make large 4:3 displays over 21", otherwise I'd totaly go for that.

I've been thinking about making a cab for a lcd also. My play was to have it on a vesa mount so that I can rotate it since there's not much sense is having a widescreen monitor but having it locked in tate all the time.

That actually gets me thinking I wonder how it would do using a lcd tv, with a NTSC converter on the jamma, to built a real low profile shmup cab as I have a 24" wide screen just laying around doing nothing. It won't look as good via s-video as it would using real RGB but that might be a neat projector, sorta like a super gun within a cab.

Hello, I attached my 24" Samsung LCD to my Sony VAIO and weather its LCD only, Monitor only, or Both my monitor gets fuzzy lines. The lines are all over the computer and are more visible with a darker color on the monitor such as a black background. Please help me get rid of this fuzziness, it is hurting my eyes also. Can you please help me? Thank you very much in advance.

I've already got 4 CRT based cabinets (2 scratch built), but have been seriously considering the next project as a scratch-built LCD based cabinet, modelled loosely on the Vewlix.

Before KillerCabs disappeared, there was a guy on there who made a mini wooden cab with an LCD that looked pretty good. Plus there's the shots floating around of the guy who did a wooden head to head Virtua Fighter 4 style cabinet with two 32" LCDs in it.

LCDs by nature are easier to rotate than CRTs (particularly if you have centred VESA mounts), and would make a nice all-in-one cabinet (covering fighters and shooters, which to me are "all" types of games I consider valid).

Also being LCD based, the cabinet profile is far thinner, and would use less materials and take up less room.
