I'd suspect as much, considering that most journalists are failed writers.

Wait, am I actually arguing about taste with the guy who created a thread to show off his personal video game collection and his girlfriend in a public internet forum? ...Nah.

Samurai Champloo is pretty good, I'll second that.

Also, I didn't notice a mention of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which is pretty damn great as well. It's the #1 series on MyAnimeList.net.

Then again, I can't name much else. I'm into girly anime myself.

I have a cuteness fetish.

EDIT: Also, I noticed a mention of Higurashi-- love it to death, excellent series. The first season was better though, if you ask me. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai explains how everything happened in the first season though.

That's kind of why people like watching Elfen Lied - Lucy's naked half the time.
Just finished Ghost in the Shell, watching Gunnm. This thread got me in the mood for some old stuff.

The story thus far is....pretty cool I guess. It could move a bit faster. I mean, {spoilers}does the homeless girl have any significance to the story other than just being there when the soldier shit went down?{spoilers}

Yes! I'm not alone!

Seriously though, check out Samurai Champloo, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai), and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

I question the tastes of anyone who does not like Gurren Lagann.

Good lord many animes nowadays are too "cute" for my taste. With the computer graphics it's just not the same as drawing it on a cell.

80s-early 90s animes holds a special place in my heart. For some reason I found a lot of them better to watch than modern animes. If you look at my anime DVD shelf just about all of them are mostly from the 80s to early 90s.

The truth is not all modern animes are bad, but seriously there's too much slice-of-life animes, animes that were made from a dating sim, and too much boys who are like the 7th grade who gets control of a mecha and he knows how to control it.

I just finish watching Gurren Lagann not too long ago and I thought it was good.

The only current anime that I'm watching is Tytania (from the people who created Legend of The Galactic Heroes which IMO is the greatest anime ever created). If you like LOGH this is the show to watch.

Another show that I'm waiting to watch in January is Viper's Creed. It looks pretty interesting, but we'll see how it is.

Other than a few current shows most modern anime IMO is crap.

I'm waiting until all the episodes of the Golgo 13 series is subbed. Someone need to sub the new Cobra OVAs and the TV series!!!!!!!!

Here's a list of 80s-early 90s animes I would recommend to people:

AD Police Files
Black Magic M-66
MD Geist I and II
Area 88 OVA (better than the TV series)
Crusher Joe (great movie)
Cyber City Oedo 808
Dangaioh
Dirty Pair
Genocyber (bloody, yes!)
Golgo 13: The Professional (I Like this better than Queen Bee)
Space Adventure Cobra (one of my favorite TV series from the 80s)
Gunbuster
Legend of Lemnear
Lilly C.A.T. (watch this in English if possible)
Madox-01
Mad Bull 34 (if you were a real man watch this ASAP!)
Neo-Tokyo
Otaku no Video (old-school anime fans will love this)
Patlabor (see the OVAs if possible, GOOD STUFF)
Project A-Ko
Roujin Z (A big satire)
They Were 11
Vampire Hunter D
Vampire Wars
Violence Jack (yes, Violence Jack)
Wicked City
Demon City Shinjuku
Wings of Honneamise (one of the greatest things Gainix ever did in their lifetime that IMO is better than EVA).
Fist of the North Star Movie
Ceph wrote:You mean Baoh, which was a pretty cool 80s manga series (iirc, Viz translated it into English in the early 90s). There was only one OAV, unfortunately (that's what you saw). Baoh was by the same artist who later drew JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
As owning all the manga issues of Baoh it's pretty good. I would recommend the manga more to the OVA (the OVA was weak IMO).

On the other hand the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga is the shit.
Shocky wrote:I think (hope!) every serious anime fan has seen Grave of the Fireflies by now. Amnesia is a bit more on the topic though. Good sci-fi written by the genius Yoshiaki Kawajiri.
The biggest problem with The Wind Name Amnesia is its length. Just barely over one hour and IMO it's not enough time to tell the whole story in its full. It could benefited if the movie was 90-100 minutes. Other than that it's a good flick.

That's a pretty fine list there Domino (although I haven't seen them all! :D )

I loved Cyber City, and even though I steer away from dubs whenever possible, the US trash dub is pure comedy on that one. I'm really glad somebody got Wings of Honneamise a mention: it's a first class movie.
I think when films get to that level, they transcend the medium. It really doesn't matter that it's Anime, it's good enough to be judged with the rest of world cinema.
A little classic!

I don't think I've been able to watch many episodes of any anime after watching Legend of Galactic Heroes few years ago. Everything after that just feels...not nearly as good. I'm gonna have to give Tytania a try.

Cool thread!
Hands up who watched all 153 hokuto no ken 1 en 2 episodes.
Awesome stuff.
I would recommend it over the movie, which doesn't make much sense in comparison to the series yet saves .
I too want more hnk, I'll check out the new series.
Thanks for all other tips.

In the meanwhile:

Yup, that's the exact reason why I quit watching anime. That and the ugly undetailed visuals(especially backgrounds) we have in anime nowadays...
Hell, just compare Macross' detailed ship hulls or Hnk's awesome post-apocalyptic setting to the friggin CG garbage of today's stuff...

@Never_Scurred
I recommend checking out Genocyber. It's not that every anime has a scene of little kids getting torn apart from a Heli's gattling.

The dub was actually done in the UK by Manga Entertainment. A regular Manga dub for its era (rewrite the script, and insert a lot of cursing). Another Manga UK dubs were Angel Cop, Mad Bull 34, Appleseed OVA, and a few others which I can't remember from the top of my head.

Cyber City has some good VAs, but the script was good and pretty funny in certain moments. I would recommend people to see this show, considering that Kawajiri was behind the series.

Guess like we're both on the same boat. After watching LOGH I really can't make myself watch a long TV series ever again. Because I know I'll be bitching that the show is just not that good compare to LOGH. Then again I watch mostly OVAs and movies.

For Genocyber watch episodes 1-3. Episodes 4-5 were a train wreck that should be avoided. If I remember the English dub wasn't that bad at all.

It's funny cause I let one of my friends borrow Genocyber (since he read the manga) and a few days later he return the DVD to me pissed since it was so different from the manga and it was bloody as hell.

On the focal point of manliness, you may get a real kick out of "Cromartie High School", by Eiji Nonaka. The entire premise of the show is all these guys trying to prove how tough they are.

Also, if you haven't seen "Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade," it's pretty awesome if you can stay awake (long movie). The suits the soldiers wear are worth the price of admission. It's one of the few Anime that I can recall actually shouting "No way!" at the end 'cause it was such a shocker.

Yeah, huge disappointment. I'm not sure about this because I never checked, but the later episodes sure felt like a completely different director was at work.
