the game is pretty much worth that much... but soon you'll see there are some that bitch about it... enjoy it, theres plenty of game for you to enjoy there.gs68 wrote:Welcome to Cave shmups, where TLBs are bombproof! =)Frederik wrote:Urm, so you can´t hurt Doom while a bomb is active? I was wondering why I went to fight Doom in Death Label mode with FIVE lives and it just wouldn´t go down. At first I thought that it simply had ridiculous health in DL mode, but then I noticed the shield around it when you bomb. Bummer
Anyways, I came home today, in a depressed/lonely mood, to this arriving in the mail. I'm a Ketsui noob so I don't know too much about the gameplay mechanics yet, but so far, it's beautiful.
I'm liking the number of extra modes so far, and of course, the unusual bullet patterns (which I've kinda experienced before in rRootage). It's starting to look like it's worth my $55 (especially since it's portable).
Ketsui Death Label
The framerate limit for DVD is 29.97 fps, which is naturally twice lower than most the actual games'. There are ways to circumvent this problem, but apparently they haven't been used?..Frederik wrote:Just watched the DVD for the first time, is the framerate really that horrible or is it just my Mac causing this? (It plays other DVDs perfectly btw) It looks very choppy, most notably when the player uses a bomb (instead of flickering it just looks either blue or orange, as if it would drop every second frame).

The review says "the game is structured in such a way as to have almost no appeal to anyone but the most absolutely dedicated shmup devotee."umi wrote:Wow, that review sucks :/ The content anyway, because it's set out very well. The replay value in this game is huge, for score or not. I'm enjoying it immensely. It's nowhere near broken. Not sure what people were expecting...jonarob wrote:Just posted a review of Ketsui Death Label today on my site by Stuart Campbell:

This is a forum for "absolutely dedicated shmup devotees", I'd say. I like the ethos behind Snappy Gamer, and I think that's a pretty reasonable review for "normal" gamers - it's not aimed at the people here.

Music is fantastic and full quality, big plus. Really adds to the "feel" in this game, I think, and I love the buzzer and the announcer in this.
Haven't played with the omake stuff a lot yet.
I like the amount of settings you have, allowing for a fine-tuned experience. I have the music turned up over the sound effects a bit.Chip display options are great.
Portability is a huge plus, helps me relax at night too to shoot bullits at bad man on the DS!
Impressive for the hardware. I am with the others, moar plz. Will support with wallet and happy dance. DS = region free to boot.

Just one thing: LOL, "normal" gamer. I guess these are the same type of people like those "normal" people, with "normal" clothes living "normal" lives, eh?

Yeah, those are neat. That's one reason why I halfway cling to touhou.Frederik wrote:Btw, one thing I really love about this game are the patterns that don´t necessarily try to drown you in bullets, but rather get their difficulty from very tricky directional movement - Evaccaneer, Vinogradov and of course Doom come to mind. I really prefer these braintwisters over the "one million blobs of purple raining down in slow motion" ones.
Good review, though the "...the game is structured in such a way as to have almost no appeal to anyone but the most absolutely dedicated shmup devotee." comment wasn't exactly very fair. All genres do that at some point, but you never hear anyone bitch about Etrian Oddysey, eh?jonarob wrote:Just posted a review of Ketsui Death Label today on my site by Stuart Campbell:

Here's some weirdness: I finished Very Hard, and later wanted to go check my score again, but when I looked at the high score page it showed only the default scores for the mode. Turns out you have to go to the bottom of the page and select the number of players (one in this case). Why would anyone want to see the "zero" players default scores?

Did you set your score with Type B? There are different score boards for each ship, and pressing A on the high score screen switches between the two.8 1/2 wrote:Here's some weirdness: I finished Very Hard, and later wanted to go check my score again, but when I looked at the high score page it showed only the default scores for the mode. Game arrived yesterday. It's awesome
Would have been better if they didn't make the modes so easy by giving you extra lives every go. They should have capped it at 6-7 lives or something.
Death Label Mode is pretty damn hard. Doom Mode is also great fun. I can't beat his 4th form yet D:
Oh, and it doesn't feel like an half-finished game at all. It runs perfectly, and it plays very nicely. Full stages would have been great, but this works just as well for me.

I don't care what anyone else says, I think this game is great fun. Especially considering it's portable =) I used to whip out Metroid Prime Pinball, Tetris, or Meteos for random plays when I didn't have any progression based game with a proper end to play through. Now Ketsui DS will probably dethrone them all... Forever =P

Can somebody tell me how the fourth and fifth Dooms in Doom Mode compare to the Death Label and Extra stage one? I would guess that the Death Label Doom is the fifth one in Doom mode, or is there an even harder one (in which case I surrender)? I can almost beat the third one from Doom mode, but I´m curious

Just opened my copy tonight and gave it a whirl. Only played through Hard B but I will be putting more time into it soon for sure. I like this. I hope they plan to release more games like this for the DS.
