No Blu Ray for Xbox 360
Christ, shut up Kaiser. Having Crueltear for your signature should be enough to discourage you from questioning anyone else's sexuality, and the toilet stuff makes you sound like a little brat.
As for the topic, I don't see the big deal. What did you really expect Microsoft to say - "Wow, our competitor's product is the wave of the future!"? While I doubt HD-DVD could have really wiped out Bluray (due to Sony's mammoth catalog) if it had emerged as the superior format, likely Sony would be saying the same thing as this guy.
In regards to the console bickering... I only own a 360 myself, but my father and sister own a PS3 and Wii respectively, so I've played both of those a good deal. Ultimately, I'm really satisfied with the 360 - I like the exclusives, the controller, and the OS software. I've never suffered the RROD. Yet it's not all rosy - Some of the add-ons ARE expensive (Wireless adapter, hard drive) and online fees do add up (Although, up to this point, you are paying for a superior online service.) My father likes to watch a lot of movies and is more interested in the multiplatform games like Madden, so I feel the PS3 was right for him. And my sister, a kinesiologist, loves jumping around with the wii and gets more use out of it than her xbox, so I would say that was right for her (elitist arguments like "it's not for real gamers" shouldn't even be considered).
But although I personally prefer the 360, I want to see all 3 consoles continue to do well. I know I'm going to irritate a lot of fanboys with this comment, but the Playstation 2 really was a shitty system. It was essentially a CPU upgrade for the Playstation with some mediocre (and largely unimplemented) addons like the hard drive and network adapter. Microsoft introduced some sharp competition where Sony had previously dominated, and this has been one of the most innovative generations of console with manufacturers continuing to retool their platforms throughout their life. We wouldn't see this in an era of single-manufacturer dominance.
In short, I play 360. Play what you want. No sense in 4 pages of flames when we're all gamers here.

Surprise, Microsoft, like any other company, is out there to make a profit.not waiting for a DVD successor [snip] seems to be paying off
I still don't see why people make a fuss about the lack of a larger storage medium. The same thing was said of the GameCube when it was launched, and in retrospect, I can't think of one game that was severely hindered due to the medium (unlike the games on N64, of which I can think of many). Honestly, what PS3 game genuinely benefits from the Blu-Ray format?

Umm, no. The PS2 was a radical departure from the original PlayStation. In fact, they ditched everything from the old PlayStation (controller excluded) and started completely anew, which unsurprisingly, disgruntled a lot of developers. But you have to give credit where it is due, Sony kept improving middleware and development software which made the PS2 a venerable competitor for the Xbox and GC that were released 18 months later. That's an impressive feat.Daedalus wrote:the Playstation 2 really was a shitty system. It was essentially a CPU upgrade for the Playstation
brilliant.... I'll be sure to tell all my "nigger" and "flaming homosexual" friends you send your regards.well, strider77 is one big flaming homosexual with fanboy bits here and there, i even saw a naked pic of him *insert a naked man pic here*.
flaming white nigger homosexual
fanboy... me? I never put all my eggs into one basket.... I own all three and my PS3 and 360 libraries are about equal now.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
I disagree. Development costs for games are already skyrocketing out of control. You don't need anywhere near the capacity of Blu Ray to make a complete game yet, and furthermore I think Sony's inclusion of it in their PS3 for any sort of gaming purposes is an excellent example of trying to implement a technology before it's matured.Ceph wrote:I think we can all argree that it would have been a good idea to include a storage medium with higher capacity than DVD when Xbox 360 was first released, because games are constantly getting larger.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Nail meets head. After a string of Hindenberg-esque propriety formats, I think it's fair to say that Sony had more than a slight vested interest in building a console around Blu-Ray. Ironically, this decision has probably actually been vindicated (the format did win the HD war), but in all honesty, Blu-Ray's victory is almost entirely disconnected from gaming. Well, apart from the paradox that a lot of consumers watch their Blu-Ray films on a games consoleMathU wrote:I disagree. Development costs for games are already skyrocketing out of control. I don't think the consoles have so much RAM that the new format is a necessity, but they do have enough that there's no reason for horribly compressed textures or low-detail areas. 360 seems to be pretty nearly equal with PS3 for detail in games, although somebody who has the systems will have to compare texture compression in one vs. another.
All Blu-Ray could be expected to deliver (and I don't think it does, because the PS3 is about 9 MB/sec transfer, with the 360 doing 16 MB/sec, notably faster) is faster loading in terms of not needing to decompress stuff from a DVD (and possibly higher quality textures, if you're right up against the storage limit on your 360 DVD). Beyond that, who has time or budget to fill up a disc when all the console is capable of is already being done at passable levels of detail? The new format would just mean you get many more hours of gameplay, but not higher-def gameplay.

Well, this is because of the bigger teams needed on all these hyper-realistic AAA titles. A Blu-Ray isn't going to cripple anyone. And while it’s not going to make a game exponentially more awesome, tonnes of storage space isn’t a bad thing.MathU wrote:I disagree. As far as I know the only game that really uses the Blu-Ray well is Metal Gear Solid, with something like 35gb of uncompressed 7.1 audio. This is not going to make the game amazing in itself but, if you’ve got the room, why not?
There's a few games on the 360 that require more than one DVD, though obviously you’re not going to buy a console entirely on the premise you’ll save 5 seconds doing this. Especially when a lot of PS3 games have hard-drive installs...

I played LBP today at some expo they have in London. It’s really just two rooms of comfy chairs and Playstation 3’s, with an embroidery section devoted to making your own sackboys (though I was not inclined to do so myself). I nitpicked about the few frames delay on the jump and typical physics problems because I’m a retentive arse, but we both found it really intuitive and... fun.
It was really interesting watching little kids play the game and experiment with the level builders. They didn’t seem to have any trouble at all, despite the complicated nature of it.
I have to admit this could be a turning point if handled correctly. And Sony seems to be gearing up to market the heck out of it. Certainly you couldn't move on the underground without seeing an advert for it, and the sackboy character could be a definate icon.

Loading times and the fact you have to install to the hard drive are big give aways to this.MathU wrote: I think Sony's inclusion of it in their PS3 for any sort of gaming purposes is an excellent example of trying to implement a technology before it's matured.

Jeez, this thread is shocking.
Kaiser, take that shit somewhere else.
Ceph, posting pictures of people, regardless of whether or not it's a past avatar, and then insulting their haircut, is so childish its ridiculous. You're losing any credibility by the post on here - not good.
For the record there's nothing wrong with that pic at all, the same as there's nothing wrong with your fairly badly drawn, rather over-smug avatar.
I'd really like to see this thread die now, and I'd really hope Ceph that you can leave the gamers to enjoy their console of choice without being wound up by anymore 'fact' based topics.

Having a high capacity storage medium doesn't automatically make development more expensive; after all you don't have to fill it.MathU wrote:I disagree. It's just that in the long run it will be nice to have this option, especially for larger developers. After all, this new generation of consoles is supposed to last about a decade; that's a long time.

On topic, I'm completely bewildered by how strongly people align themselves to one particular console. I have a slight favourite in the PS3, but they're all good machine's aren't they, with or without Blu-ray?
