Dead Space
A pretty limiting topic, especially on a shmups forum -- but this looks great. I'm a survival horror nut and I've been waiting forever for the release...looks like it's more or less living up to the hype. Anyone else going to pick it up?
I'm considering it but it looks like basically RE4 in space. Nothing really wrong with that, I guess, but I'll definitely try it before I buy it because I'm just skeptical like that.
Besides, this http://www.oxmonline.com/article/review ... dead-space was pretty discouraging to read.

I get the feeling Meghan Watt's never played a survival horror game.

I've already played Doom 3 to death. No thanks.

Once you get around to Mirror's Edge I'd appreciate some impressions of that one, it's one of the few first-person titles that have ever piqued my interest. Otherwise I'll just have to wait for the demo like the rest of the world, heh heh.spadgy wrote:Thanks to LittleBigPlanet, Mirrors Edge and a whole bunch of others haven't got touched, but Dead Space is next!

I'm mostly poking fun.Never_Scurred wrote:

This game looks like Doom 3.2.
Doom 3 kinda tread the line between survival horror and FPS, but it's more of a horror-themed FPS. Technically, Dead Space is a third-person survival horror with an emphasis on shooting. It looks like it has some light -- and I mean light -- RPG elements. But the concept of survival horror is really trying to survive. Limited ammo, constant suspense/adrenaline rush, odds against you, etc. Doom 3 :: Dead Space looks more to be generic slasher flick :: something like Twilight Zone or Hitchcock...but with more gore.

Think Resident Evil and Silent Hill for survival horror. Doom is the typical but horror-themed FPS.
We'll just say Dead Space = smarter, better Doom 3.

so like nobody ever read or saw the developer interviews it seems.
basically the idea was crazy shit went down, you're an ENGINEER of all things, and you are stuck rebuilding the shit you find in order to defend yourself, as well as makeshifting stuff to get new weapons that aren't super conventional etc etc.
tell me if the game has actually lived up to that philosiphy or they ditched it along the way.

picked up the game today... played threw the 1st chapter so far. it looks great and has startled me several times.
you upgrade your weapons via work benches and need "nodes" to bee stuff up and can buy stuff it seems also, along with finding it along the way.
there is combat and you shoot at them ect or a few mele attacks so far. it deffinately seems to be a little resident evil 4 since enemies drop ammo... you are meant to use your weapons and fire...
seems cool so far... looks nice, high production values and some atmosphere. to early to say anything but it's starting off really well.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Hum. I guess I'll check out a video sometime soon. Won't be buying it for a while, but it's nice to hear it's not being completely panned and the idea of workbenches (yay) is nice...even though I'm sure there's little real creativity you can put into modding your weapons... (flashbacks of Star Wars Galaxies here)
It does look promising, even if the guy looks like Master Chief's cousin and the gameplay looks similar to Resident Evil 4.
Too bad the PC version will have that stupid DRM scheme EA insisting on using, despite the fact that the games are easily pirated and they even have a LAWSUIT pending because of their malware included with their games.
Sigh, maybe I should give up on building that gaming rig and just buy a 360.

Since 2000, it's been impossible not to compare a gun-wielding space man to Master Chief.FatCobra wrote:It does look promising, even if the guy looks like Master Chief's cousin

Gee I didn't see this coming, it's not like Far Cry, Far Cry 1.5, Far Cry 1.5 With Knife or Far Cry: Cry Harder weren't disappointments or anythingjonarob wrote:I enjoyed Dead Space, considerably more than I'm enjoying Far Cry 2. Sorry people - I totally forgot! I'm several hours in now and I just can't decide about Mirror's Edge. Half the time it feel smooth and fluid and exhilarating and fun, and the next moment its a clunky, misguided and rather flailing. It's been ages since I had such mixed feeling about a game. If you do want more info, I can go into more detail, but I won't be presumptuous now the demo is out...

I'm on chapter 7 at the moment. Playing easy mode because I hated the control system when I started and it was handicapping me. Now i've gotten so far through it I find it easy.
If you like Aliens and Event horizon (movies) this is right up your street.
There are some issues with it.
1) Its one of those games that expects you to know what to do. So give it time.
2) Some missions are quite complex in design, but luckily the map guides you straight to where your supposed to go. The map however is quite fiddly as you need to move it round in 3D. Quite hard when your mission is on a timer or aliens pop out of every nook and cranny.
3) Zero G levels make my head hurt. You can jump from the floor to the wall, to the ceiling. Then forget which way up your supposed to be or even which way you came in and which way is out
4) The game requires that my brightness is up to 86%. Of course a great deal of the game is darker than it is light.
5) Difficulty settings only adjust the amount of times you need to hit something. Of course this leads to being bone dry on ammo most of the time. Resorting to exploding furniture to get most of your hits.
Personally, I find it enough of a challenge (in places) on easy mode. Mind, this is my FPS type controlled game i've played since Uncharted. I'm just not a very good player with twin analogs.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Beat the game last week, attempting 2nd playthrough soon. I'm eager to know how the level 5 suit looks but it's 99000 credits...
Really liked it except it would have been much better without the annoying NPCs IMO.
BTW, played it in german - hilarious voice-acting.

Loved the Zero G levels! The disoriented feeling you get is funny, especially if you have a oxygen countdown on your back.neorichieb1971 wrote: 3) Zero G levels make my head hurt. Neo: I got tired of flipping back and forth from the 3D map -- just click in the left (right?) thumbstick. You'll get a momentarily illuminated guide on the ground that shows you where to go. Absolutely genius in a game like this. And reading up on objectives gives Issac's perspective as an engineer on what needs to be done -- also a cool touch.
I'm playing through it on normal with my gf, but she's in architecture studio 93% of the time, so it's slow going. I'm on chapter 3 and have had ample opportunities to shit my pants.
Dead Space at midnight in total darkness and a pumping surround sound system = a great experience.

I find the game to be pretty fun and the graphics are the best I've seen. I dont like how on at least normal difficulty the only "difficulty" is having ammo and how the enemies start coming at obvious/illogical spots, like enemies decide to attack you out of nowhere every time you push a big button.
I would probably like this more if I would get scared every once in a while, playing lots of games sort of wears out the shock factors
