Don't worry, I do. A lot more than a game that thinks bullets that move in curves is a good design idea.
It's more realistic. I know most of your team has played RFJ to some extent, so maybe you're just disappointed that you're playing a game that everyone isn't as familiar with? :D Should have voted Battle Garegga...

Bullets, sharp curves, realistic?
Hate to see what your reality is like. Rockets that fly round corners. :p

Also, we were collectively confident with RFJ, not as much with Garegga (DEL has never played it, Held hates it, I'm rusty at it and the others probably wouldn't have been happy with it). But whatever.

This is particularly asinine. Other than sharing a vague historical setting, these games could not be more different.

By this logic, Kiki KaiKai is a poor attempt at an updated Kagemusha.

It's a sad state of affairs when putting time and effort into making gorgeous graphics and a rock solid setting gets you dismissed as being 'artsy'. Why not go the whole way and declare any game with more than 2 colours as simply exhibiting a pretension too far?

Well, my apologies then. For some reason it sounded to me like you were being ironic.

Progear is the game I prefer most out of the available choices and I'm glad it won the vote :) :)

Haha

I get serious in this thread

Fact still remains, out of what I consider the 'original' cave games (pre-DOJ), guwange is the 'worst'. They're all good games though. DP has ridiculously anal chaining, DDP has scoring stupidity in the 2nd loop especially when you die, lose your bomb max bonus for any amount of time or break chain, ESP RA. DE. has stupid boss milking, DF is the definition of memorization, Guwange has coin milking, and Progear has level restart shenanigans in the second loop. There I trashed all of them.

Yeah, I smell what you're cooking. The crazy chaining in Guwange is as good a reason as any not to like it. I was merely taking exception to the "damn, game sucks 'cus it's pretty' mentality.

No, but being pretty (and super-Japanese) doesn't make it necessarily good =p

Pocky and Rocky isn't really historical, either, since all you ever do is fight monsters and demons and shit (at least as far as I know, since I'm pretty bad at it). I'd have to say the Touhou games are closer in theme/setting, but Guwange has "being on foot" and "stages that aren't straight lines" in common.

However, you can't turn :( Kiki KaiKai is way more fun.

DF would probably be my favorite Cave game (of the ones I've played) if my first experience wasn't playing the time attack for several hours. Sure, the memorization is godawful, but that tends to be the consequence of having a game that's so damned fast. The music gets pretty good later on and the overall disco stylings are simultaneously stupid and awesome.

Well, it's hardly the only shooting game to share particular defining gameplay traits. Guwange is essentially Commando in a kimono.

Heh, I'm sure I didn't say this. But style is important. Think of it as the icing on a cake, as opposed to any spongy innards it might be concealing.

Not that I needed more incentive to not play the game for this week, but every ROM I've been able to find is lacking pgaux03 and 04, and I can't seem to find any packs or anything that have the necessary files.

Oh well... No big loss, really.

Mods, I don't think this counts counts as roms, but if it does then just delete this post.

Arvandor: You can find the cps2 xor tables in this site.

I think they're unnecessary for for newer versions of mame because the developers discovered a way to get around them (not sure though).
