Wipeout HD
Sharp comment! I bought the game and played it on my 37" 1080p panel, and lo and behold, WipEout reveals its true sub-fullHD nature: what the game does is it renders the scene to texture at 720p, scales that to 1080p, and then overlays the HUD in native resolution.D wrote:At what resolution does wipeout really run at? not one game runs nativeley 1080p.
You can see for yourself, just download some 1080p screenshots, resize them to 1280x720, sharpen (because there is always some loss in upsampling->downsampling->upsampling), and resize to 1920x1080 again. There's barely any difference, and most notably, all the jagged pixely edges of the polygons are preserved, indicating the game really does render at that resolution.

Wipeout HD was supposed to be an interim product only. Hence why its HD and not wipeout 5 etc. Whether or not S-Liverpool are going to just bring HD up to Wipeout 5 specs with DLC is unknown at this time.
There is absolutely no hardcopy version coming out at all. At 1GB it would be considered a waste. Maybe if there is at least 10GB of data they might consider it.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
I never considered the size a game takes on disc to matter much. This title could be pressed on a disc and them charge 60.00 for it and I would have been far more satisfied with it then I have with retail discs that take up way more room.
This really is one of the best PS3 experiences I've had so far.

Ridge racer is native 1080p
Wipeout HD is rendering at anywhere from 1920x1080 down to 1280x1080 depending on system load, using the ps3 horizontal scaler

To my knowledge there is no real way to calculate at what resolution a game is running at, but apparantly there's alot of upscaling going on in alot of games. That's not necesarily a bad thing, but it is bad when 480p native games are getting boo'd when the resolutions are not that far apart.mufunyo wrote:Sharp comment! Strange thing is that no games magazine or site investigates stuff like this. They just publish whatever the manufacterer says. It has always been like that. Same with PS Ridge Racer vs SS Sega Rally. Sega Rally has a much nice framerate than ridge racer!
there is a pretty HUGE difference between 1080p and 480p... an uncanny one actually.480p native games are getting boo'd when the resolutions are not that far apart
I like sega rally more than ridge racer but it is CLEARLY running at 30 compared to RR's 60. Oh wait.... your comparing old stuff.Sega Rally has a much nice framerate than ridge racer
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I meant between 480p and stuff like Halo http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/28/halo- ... ers-claim/Strider77 wrote:there is a pretty HUGE difference between 1080p and 480p... an uncanny one actually.480p native games are getting boo'd when the resolutions are not that far apart
What I think is even worse is that some people seem to think that the independant research of some bloke named Quaz51 is actually the word of the actual developers themselves.D wrote:To my knowledge there is no real way to calculate at what resolution a game is running at, but apparantly there's alot of upscaling going on in alot of games. At the risk of sounding like the local village idiot, I'm going to say some more things about this based on my own findings, and I encourage everyone to look at the screenshots (zoomed in if necessary) themselves, and not take anyone's word for it.
My personal findings indicate that the resolution rendered by WipEout HD is NOT anamorphic, and not dynamic. It's likely to be something close to 1280x720, possibly a little over or a little under. To people saying "the PS3's scaler works only horizontally", I have found no proof to sustain this, as the PS3 is perfectly capable of render-to-texture, which is the common method used to render at a lower resolution than the display video mode.
Quaz51's claim of dynamic resolution most likely stems from the likelyhood that HDR post-processing is done after stretching the rendered image to 1080p, as the PS3's hardware lends itself very well to pixel shader arithmetic and is likely to be more than powerful enough to perform these effects in full resolution. Different scenes are differently lit, and brighter scenes may seem to be rendered at a higher resolution than darker scenes. My source for this observation comes from the still photo capture function in the game, which allows you to mimick under- or overexposure, the latter looking smoother than the former. The still photo capture function is also a great place to debunk the "dynamic resolution" claim, as the picture stays evenly pixelated even when the screen is completely static. The screen is rendered as it normally would (with subsampled resolution and no anti-aliasing), until you actually take the picture and all the fancy effects get added to make a beautiful still shot.
To debunk the claim of anamorphism (the horizontal resolution being lower than the vertical resolution), you can do two things. First, wait at the title screen until an attract mode demo comes up. These contain slow camera pans and you can get nice and up close to your screen to look at all the details. If the picture was anamorphic, a mostly horizontal edge would be much sharper than a mostly vertical edge. As far as I can see, this does not occur in WipEout HD. The second thing you can do, to see what I'm talking about, is to download the Super Stardust HD demo from PSN. This game, as far as I can tell, is rendered in a resolution somewhere about 1280x1080 or maybe 1440x1080 (so most definitely anamorphic). The game shows this very clearly, as there is a big sphere on screen all the time. Look at the top and bottom edges of the sphere, and you will see that they are much sharper and more detailed than the left and right edges. This is the effect of anamorphic stretching.
I hope this clears up things (especially for kernow who seems to be a bit religious about it), and remember that not everyone looks as closely as the die-hard pixel counters. The fact that this game has passed off as fullHD 1080p all the way up to its release is a testament to how little people really care about high-def gaming. Myself as a long-time PC user used to rendering at whatever resolution I specify, with or without anti-aliasing if I so please, am shocked at the dirty tricks console games use to be gathered under the term "high-definition". I am also thoroughly unimpressed by the framerates that current-gen consoles pull, and that it's even a rarity for games like WipEout to display 60 frames per second. On older consoles, people just wouldn't settle for lower framerates! Imagine if Super Mario ran at a 20-30ish frames per second, like GTA IV does. Let's just hope the next generation of consoles will be less underpowered.
so my ps3 got the blinking red light of death, so i'm scouring ebay for parts and ill see if i can diagnose and figure out what part of my ps3 decided to kick the bucket.
meanwhile i couldn't be without a ps3, so i'm selling more crap to pay for my ps3, and i've put my xbox 360 wishes on the shelf for now.
so i'm back, add me 'baysan' so we can rock some wipeout hd racing.
later.

Re: Wipeout HD
Necrobump.
In case anybody still cares about (horizontal) resolution (scaling) in HD/Fury, here (at the page's bottom) is the developer's word for it. I'm posting it as I've never heard of anything quite like it in games released before or since.
