Who in their right mind decided it was a good idea to make the players basically sit around twiddling their thumbs while "travelling" from place to place? It has a few interesting elements, but is extremely linear, and I got about halfway through before getting sick of it.
As for games I'd recommend, I thought Dragon Quest Monsters: Rocket Slime was pretty decent for a light action RPG, but don't expect much of a challenge out of it. Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is OK as a relatively straight-up RPG, but I got bored with it before finishing too. I'm told by a lot of people the GBA original is better.
I think the GBA original is better, too.
As for Contact, that never bothered me. I usually went to sleep and played with the cat, went fishing, or cooked some food to kill the time. In fact, I think if you go to sleep, then wake yourself up you'll automatically arrive at your destination. It's been a while, though.
Still, it has great music and some really cool ideas. I think you should at least try it once, and it should be pretty cheap nowadays.
