Worthy RPG´s for the Nintendo DS?

Post by Super Laydock »

I am kind of in the mood for a new, time consuming, RPG game.
I am not THAT much of veteran in this genre to be annoyed by cliche stories and all. Just want a fun, well thought out, engrossing game.

Of the games I have played in this genre favourites are stuff like:

Earthbound (yes I know there is no substitute for this... in English :(), Zelda:Lttp, Hydlide 3 and Grandia 2. Quite diverse I believe...

Still, knowing this, what would be good RPG´s to start out on for the Nintendo DS*???

Actually preordered that one, a rare occasion for me and a rpg... (should have mentioned it come to think of it...)

Thanks for the suggestion though. I think it´s a good one (reports are good on this one) :)

Sorry dude, their isn't much of a choice of rpg's on nintendo ds. I suggest final fantasy iii (i know how original). While it isn't anywhere as epic as earthbound, its fun.

Now if you can wait a little while, dragon quest monsters joker is getting a stateside release. Which if you haven't played any of the other dragon quest monsters series, its like a pokemon game, except much much more difficult.

Dragon quest ix is also coming out on the ds, but thats not for awhile.

Hope this helps.

Mario and Luigi 2 wasn't bad.

Does Izuna count? It's a Rogue-like, but all Rogue-likes have inherent RPG elements (moreso than the likes of Zelda especially, which is only barely an RPG in the barest of senses).

Izuna got some mixed reviews, but I loved it.

Not really, but good games nonetheless. :)

You could try Etrian Odyssey. It's pretty fantastic, but... definitely an accquired taste. The chances that you'd hate it are pretty high, but if you enjoy it it'll last you a while.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! :D

Yes I am open to gba games, but not too interested so far into this Golden Sun series.

Mario and Luigi should be a given though, actually forgot about that title...

Also, I never heard about this "Etrian Odyssey" before.
Having searched for some info on it it does seem like a game I could enjoy. Keeping an eye on that one and will probably get this after coming back from vacation.

Why not? They're very well made, and have some great puzzles.

I was severely disappointed by Contact, which makes some mind-numbingly stupid design decisions, especially for a portable game. Who in their right mind decided it was a good idea to make the players basically sit around twiddling their thumbs while "travelling" from place to place? It has a few interesting elements, but is extremely linear, and I got about halfway through before getting sick of it.

As for games I'd recommend, I thought Dragon Quest Monsters: Rocket Slime was pretty decent for a light action RPG, but don't expect much of a challenge out of it. Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is OK as a relatively straight-up RPG, but I got bored with it before finishing too. I'm told by a lot of people the GBA original is better.

I think the GBA original is better, too.
As for Contact, that never bothered me. I usually went to sleep and played with the cat, went fishing, or cooked some food to kill the time. In fact, I think if you go to sleep, then wake yourself up you'll automatically arrive at your destination. It's been a while, though.
Still, it has great music and some really cool ideas. I think you should at least try it once, and it should be pretty cheap nowadays.

Oh no doubt the first Mario & Luigi game is superior. I still enjoyed the second enough to finish it though. Which says something with the way me and RPGs usually go =)

Luminous Arc is pretty good. Final Fantasy III was fairly awesome as well. And Lunar Knights is fun too.

I'll second Etrian Odyssey. It's a nearly endless horrible grind but if you arm yourself with that knowledge going in and are ready for a test of your gaming endurance you might find something to like.

Can anyone speak for Rune Factory? It was labeled the "fantasy harvest moon." I haven't checked it out myself but from the gameplay videos it looked amazing.

You have to be into that sort of stuff I guess but at least that video caught my attention.

I've really been intrigued by Etrian Odysey since it first came out. It seems like a straight hardcore RPG. Can't you make your own maps using the bottom screen and the stylus? It sounds like a good version of Deep Labyrinth too.

Yep. It's Wizardry with the ability (hell, the requirement) to make your own maps, with the tools to do it integrated seamlessly. If you like old-school hardcore PC RPGs, you'll love this.

Eh, Deep Labyrinth was pretty different. All it really had in common was the first person perspective.

Why is there no talk of Dragon Quest IV? Absolutely fantastic 3-d realization of DQ IV in the style of DQ VII. Man, I'm loving this!

Shiren the wanderer is the greatest thing ever. No fluff, no lameness - just hardcore fun and excitement.

I was so disappointed when the Playstation version never made it over. Unfortunately, my love for the series has faded over he years, so I don't get as excited.

Although, the prospects of finally being able to play 5 & 6 could tempt me to buy another DS.

For the flash card equipped among you, there's this interesting roguelike freeware for gba & DS: Powder.

I can't say enough good things about it either. I never played the original, but I loved Etrian Odyssey 2. If you like dungeon crawlers, you'll love this game.
This is not similation. Get ready to destoroy the enemy. Target for the weak points of f**kin' machine. Do your best you have ever done.

The Etrian Odyssey games are not only at the very top of my DS RPG list, but also at the very top of my list of games for the DS, in general. Tons of fun.

Etrian Odyssey I and II are my favorites on the DS. They're fantastic if you want pure gameplay without any fluff.

Shiren is also good, but in a completely different way.

wow there is a suikoden for DS?
The rpg's i played were totally worthless but suikoden tactics was absolutely amazing.
Guess i'll keep an eye on it

Etrian Odyssey II is a beautiful but really hard game, i also was having a lot of fun with luminous arc (even due to some minor stylus probs), so you may check out that, if you like strat-rpg's in a beautiful anime style.
