Dullest Bosses?

Post by mjclark »

Just as a corollary to the "Freakiest, Most Messed-Up Bosses" thread, what shmups have the dullest bosses?
I just checked out that "Trapezedron of Darkness" stuff from the "Presentation Isn't Everything" thread and man those bosses were unremarkable...so were the ones in XII Stag come to think of it :?

Stage 3 behind boss in HellSinker. The first 3 bosses in any TouHou game before Moutain of Faith. Also the TLB in The Trapezohedron of the darkness.

Fixed.

Also:

Most of the bosses from Mushihime-sama. The game truly shines during the stages, but when that boss music hits, HOLY SHIT, prepare for mediocre, uninspired, and forgettable purple diarrhea.

Chaos Field. All of it.

Most of the bosses from R-Type Final. ...actually, scratch that, ALL of the bosses from R-Type Final.

The "final boss" from every Gradius game ever made. Here's hoping they make him fight back in Gradius Rebirth.

Angeraze 2's final boss. Hot damn, those were the worst and most exploitable bullet patterns ever generated by a final boss.

Most of the bosses on Ghost Pilots were dull to me, none of them really stuck out.

The first boss in Megablast has to win this. It's the legs of a presumably giant robot that you never get to see. Fires a few bullets at you then runs away if you shoot it too many times.

To me any boss that I have to do boss milking on is dull. I guess this means I won't ever get the full Raizing experience.

I still make poo poo in my pants when I´m trying to milk Boredom in Batrider. And actually, the milking in EspRaDe is MUCH duller, since that secondary-attack only "peppering" takes forever (and quite honestly, it always seemed like a programming oversight to me). But in any case, I´d rather have to milk an exciting boss for several minutes with increasingly hard attacks than having to face really boring ones that do next to nothing.

A good boss milking in my book is when the bosses react like you´re a little gnat trying to suck blood from them, and they get increasingly pissed

Awesome. Which game is that?

I have to nominate the bosses of Katakis (C64). They look fine, but all you have to do is sit in one spot and wait for the boss to explode.

Yokotate and the sword did this. You were too close to the bullet emitters to admire the view much. The game keeps you so focused on your ship's immediate vicinity--but not always its hitbox--that it does trippy things to your vision. The gameplay isn't something you'd eat for its nutritive value.

The first two? Yep. The last one? Maybe. But the stage 3 and stage 4 bosses are amazing. Their patterns are beautiful to look at AND require you to actually dodge them, not just tap left and right. In maniac mode, that is

Also, Night Raid bosses are stupid and die too fast.

as already mentioned esprade milking is shocking way worse than any raizing game , it actually ruins the game for scoring as if you intend on competitively scoring you have to do it .

And yet they love that game in Japan, for some reason or other.

I shudder at the thought of *playing* the game but some guy posted a video review of the game some time ago.

Darwin 4078 has the exact same ship for every stage, just a bit different patterns. Halley's Comet has the same setup as the Darwin 4078. Both are great games though. Darwin 4078 has the coolest weapon system ever.

On a scale of Dull to 10, I'd give Viewpoint's bosses a -∞.
Sort of like playing a 60min long Gradius bossrush, but with every boss being the Big Core from the first game.
Or like going into the Oxford Concise Dictionary and changing every word to "dull" and then reading it in a depressing monotone voice.

Ah, confirming this. Both the notion of Mushi's stage 3 & 4 bosses being rather fuckwin, and Night Raid's bosses being exceedingly boring. (Otherwise, though, I'd rate Night Raid a pretty decent and fun shooter)
