Man ESP RA DE is awesome!

Post by espibara »

I'm new to the MAME scene and have only recently sampled ESP RA DE and I think its awesome.

I'm a big espgaluda fan on the PS2 but i think ESP RA DE is better.

My favourite cave game so far as well. Mind you it is the first Cave game I ever played. I believe its the lack of game mechanics which gives it a slightly more "raw" appeal than most other Cave shooters.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Are you referring to a scoring mechanic? Because it has one just as deep as any other Cave game, it's just kind of hard to grasp without someone explaining it: RQ: ESPRade scoring

But really, you can play any shooter "raw" and just completely ignore the scoring. I tend to do so past the first two or three stages in most manics because I suck and lack discipline.

That's kind of wrong.

ESPRa.De. requires little to no memorization of scoring routes (since they're pretty flexible and intuitive as a whole), has lowest price of mistakes, absolutely linear scoring with no exponents that skyrocket in the last stage or two, and considerably smooth difficulty curve without resorting to looping.

In other words, no, it's not as deep as any other Cave game, by far.

It´s one of those Cave shmups I´d NEVER play for score - mainly because if you are really serious about your score you have to resort to boring boss milking that takes forever.

Also, every time I come back to DDP after playing ESPRaDe I´m surprised on how much more polished DDP feels. Maybe it´s because in DDP the bullets are bigger and easier to see, maybe because I actually know where my hitbox is at all times, maybe because the bullet patterns seem much tighter...

I also agree with this:

And if it sounds like I hate this game, I don´t; I´d much rather play this one than Progear or Guwange, mainly because I like the theme better. I also love how fast Yusuke (first character) moves, it give the game a much different feel than DDP.

I wish the hitbox was in a different spot, because I've never really been able to "just know" where it is in the more hectic spots of the game.

Other than that, fantastic.

The hitbox and sloppy-feeling movement are the only things I don't like about Ra.De., otherwise it's great. Galuda fixes these problems as well as adding (imo) better boss patterns and a scoring system that's more fun, so I like it more. I think Ra.De was like the third Cave shmup I ever played though and it's definitely great.

ESPRaDe is the reason it took me forever to discover that ESPGaluda is awesome.

My only gripe is that I peak out a little ways into the game, so the first bit feels boring if I'm doing good, and frustrating if I do bad. I feel the same way about Giga WIng. I don't like the feeling that I could make it all the way to the end of the game, but I won't know for another 20 minutes, and I can't space off until then. Galuda is also a bit like that. I like games that happen just a bit faster.
Also, The shield recharge element has been hard for me to connect with. Do I have to memorise just the right spots to use it? It's like a long term investment in the middle of the action.
DDPDOJ feels like every moment matters a lot.

Since I played ESPGALUDA, I have no desire to play ESPRADE again. It only frustrates me now.

Irori is really cute, though! Image

i love esprade although and im not sure if its mame but i to have problems navigating through bullets the control seems a bit edgy that said espgaluda im not so keen on i think the arrange mode should have been the arcade mode tbh , the theme of galuda with the most rediculously contrasting music ever just doesnt work for me , if only they would make a true sequel to esprade i for one would love to see a return to that crazy tokyo setting .

It is a nice game, you should try the select few other cave games MAME has to offer.

If only they'd dump more recent Cave games... *sigh*

ESP Ra. De. is a very nice game, but I still prefer DoDonPachi and Mushihimesama to it. I plan on getting ESPgaluda soon, so we'll see how that turns out. :p

Ra.De. is my favorite Cave game.

I love the design and the music. And I really like the secondary weapons you can use. You can just sorta sling that flame shot about. It's really cool.

QFT

the only way espgaluda compares to esprade is arrange more....which kinda mixes the 2 scoring systems together....and art style obviously
