Border Down why do people rave over it so much???
Border Down why do people rave over it so much???
Have this for my DC and I'm sorry its a solid shooter but nothing more. I just cant seem to get into it.
I'd much rather play Under defeat and Zero Gunner 2.
Maybe I'm missing something.

go and play under defeat and zero gunner then and sell border down , use the money to buy some games you do like , problem solvedespibara wrote:Have this for my DC and I'm sorry its a solid shooter but nothing more. I just cant seem to get into it.

espibara - Many people are put off it because its not a 'pick up and play' game like Cave games. Without learning basic break laser points you'll get nowhere. Its a mix of an oldskool memorizing game like R-Type and new score engine based play, coming from a Darius background.
Definitely one of my top three of all time games, but you've got to realise that I come from the 80s arcades which means that this type of game comes naturally to me, so its not for everyone. Its deep.

That's 1880s as well!DEL wrote:espibarabut you've got to realise that I come from the 80s arcades
Seriously though, I felt the same as espibara until I had a chat with DEL at Battle Of Destiny. After that I went home and discovered something amazing (though I haven't had time to session it at all). It just isn't an obvious game when you first play it. It's both subtle and complex, but worth reading up on and persisting with.
Oh - DEL - you at Casino tonight?
I think the game's kind of weak gameplay wise (minus scoring details), but very strong adventure-wise and art wise. Darius gaiden/metal black-wise, and has a great presentation. If they just would have smoothed out the pacing a little bit, it would rule. I always feel a little bit out of control, like I'm going to be sniped or won't see a bullet. RAD music though! Space Jazz!
its really high and most other sites tops lists, runs well over $100, gets more credit than anything other than ikaruga. I can't stand it either. Its pretty and all but the interruptions every time you die is a turn off.szycag wrote:I didn't know people really did "rave" over it, I don't see people mentioning it much outside of what there is on the DC or when talking about Thunderforce-like games.
Scoring systems are cool, but... action is paramount.

I like the legendary G-Darius PCB...much better than the PSX port or even the PS2 Taito Legends port of the same name. Plus the fact that G-Darius still retains that old-school gameplay of the original but infused with updated polygonal graphics to boot. None of my local arcades even got such a G-Darius PCB in so I couldn't play it and had to be content with the USA PSX port that was released by T-HQ. Still better than not bring it Stateside, Toy Headquarters has to be commended for doing so. I thought that Working Designs was going to handle the exclusive publishing and distribution rights but alas, T-HQ beat them to the punch. ^_~evil_ash_xero wrote:It's OK.

Border Down is an interesting blend of sorts...it would take some serious sessions to learn the finer points of what it has to offer. With G-Darius, it has that simple "pick me up" type of gameplay that is really easy to grasp and doesn't burden the player with such deep scoring system and whatnot. Different shmups for different folks. ^_~

It's definitely a grower. I remember picking it up when it came out just after R-Type Final. For some bizarre reason I shelved it in favour of Final
It turns out R-Type Final was one of the emptiest shmupping experiences I've ever had the misfortune of taking part in, and Border Down was one of the most beautiful, in-depth, rewarding games I own.
