Followup Shmups that used 2D parts instead of previous 3D

I dont know any.
I just wonder if there is any shmup that goes one step backwards and not the usual 2D->3D "improvement".

The only game series I know of offhand that went from 2D -> 3D -> 2D was Langrisser, and that's a strategy RPG series... about as far from shmups as you can get.

Well, that's not exactly what you meant, but..

Laydock was made for MSX 2, while it's 1st sequel, Super Laydock, was made for MSX 1 (And it's a lot better than it's prequel).

They are all 2D though.

I am completely unversed in the world of video games. I'm finding out/realizing that there are game names all around me. I just realized a week or two ago that Thunder Force is not only a forum handle but also a game. :lol:

Not only is Thunder Force a game, but it is one of the most brilliant shmup series ever made. Though Thunder Force is supposed to be somewhat lackluster, and II isn't anything to write home about, the rest is pure bliss. 8)
