Adventures in mars matrix...
Adventures in mars matrix...
Soo i tried to get a friend to get into shmups.. tried all my basic ones like gunbird 2, ikaruga, shikigami no shiro... so in frustration when i went to go shave before goin out, i sat him in front of the dreamcast and threw on mars matrix.. figure he'll suffer a few minutes before getting frustrated and quits.
I was wrong. He got horribly violated, but he liked the game because of the intensity. Next night he passes by, and i grabbed the second controller, and even i got into it. Co-Op made mars matrix good to me when i previously hated it ^.^
Any other games that are like this with co-op?

Re: Adventures in mars matrix...
i'd recommend GigaWing 1&2 (kinda pre-&sequel to MM)gennss wrote:Any other games that are like this with co-op?
the control-shemes are much easier to grasp and both include "panic-bombs"
in my observation yoko-shmups are far less confusing for newbies to play in co-op than tate-shmups where both ships/players more often are in the same spot and therefore things get irritating for them quite easily

A two-player gaming session of the original Capcom CPS2 Mars Matrix PCB is cool as well. Can't beat playing with just a single fire button for all four different MM weaponry functionality at your disposal.
A used CPS2 board of MM goes for about $50-$55 USD is the norm these days whether it is either the original JPN or the USA region version. The rarer black-colored single-layered CPS2 Mars Matrix PCB goes for the same amount on YAJ but with some trade-offs. Stick with the original CPS2 "A & B" board setup and you'll just be fine. ^_~
You might recall the eBay seller of Bill Burger selling such brand new and boxed CPS2 kits of MM for a mere $100.00 USD back in 2000-2001.

No no nononono. No. Just improve your score. If you need goals- aim for the bottom scores in the forum's score chart and work your way up.gennss wrote:After work, at his place this time... more mars matrix. The unlockables really sets goals in the game.
The unlockables suck.
Well i figure better to get through the game first. and the strat actually helped a little. Co-OP mode i wouldn't say is good for hi-score challenges, but definitely decent practice in helping learn the levels, patterns and strategies.
Don't worry I'll post an embarrassing (tiny) score on that thread soon enough.
ps: my thumb hurts.

Or you could use a DC Gameshark (even the DC Gameshark Lite version works well) and unlock all items and give 'em a spin to see what they do. Unlocking the entire MM CGI art gallery was worth it. ^_~szycag wrote:I turned my friend Art on to Mars Matrix. He only really plays MMOs and stuff nowadays. The only thing he'll get excited about is unlocking more ships and credits in the store. I suppose if that's what it takes.

I recently played Mars Matrix and did quite a bit better with it than I had my first time. Still not a fan of the bullet hell stuff, and MM still looks strange as hell, but I have more fun with it than I used to
Especially when I consider the alternatives...
19XX being one of them
Also, try out Guardian Force, it's TEH FUNS

My and my old housemate used to play co-op MM a hell of a lot. Neither of us were good enough to try for a 1cc or even high score in this one, and he didn't really have any inclination to work towards goals like that.
This game is great in co-op as there is just so much going on. You are almost getting shot at every turn and the sheer mass of bullets in some spots is astounding.
Good fun.

They all sound like they have a low-pass filter on them which makes them sound really gritty and dark. Its a pretty fun game too. I haven't gotten past stage 4 yet though. I'd love to get the CPS-2 of it someday.
Yep, playing/owning the CPS2 version of MM is cool and a bit different compared to the later DC port. It's just the arcade game and nothing else extra. You can listen to the kick-ass BGM tunes via the Operator's Menu Selection screen setup. ^_~
