True, but I still don't like how in every Thunderforce discussion that comes up these days, TFIV is praised like it's the best game ever and TFV is treated like it rivals Planet Joker. In reality, the gap between the two isn't all that big. Let's not forget that TFIV is not without its issues and it's perfectly possible to enjoy TFV.Rob wrote:Still, there were bigger and better games released before TFV, like Thunder Force IV.
I never really got all that free range whining, either. I think it really only matters to people playing TFV for score. I never really used free range much myself. Like lawnspic said:
If we talk about terrible weapon design in the Thunderforce series, why don't we ever mention the different incarnations of Wave, which, despite all looking and working slightly differently, all share the same amazing uselessness.lawnspic wrote:I have never held onto that weapon the entire time (though i almost could just for the hell of it, still almost impossible)
Also, I have to agree with Strider:
Strider77 wrote:I think 4 is probably the better game but I admit I enjoy 5 more.

Most of DC shmups looks better than G5
Well, i'm certainly going to have to disagree with that one. The best looking shooters on the Dreamcast are G Rev's, and they just kicked it up a notch for GV. So, what games look better? We can quarrel about design(which I think it still looks better), but in terms of sheer technology, GV looks better than any DC shooter.

^^ Dame Edna presents ThunderForce VI!
The game is looking better everytime I see it moving too btw.
Music seems ok, but below intended original (Broken Thunder ost by now) standards as far as I have heard.
- Border Down is as technically advanced as GV though has not so imaginative design choices (not that I care since it does look beautiful - that and GV isn't that imaginative either). -on par+-
- Zero Gunner 2 (imho better looking than Border Down and WITH nice design (especially the bosses!) -on par+-
- Under Defeat (I don't really like it as much as I hoped I would, but technically it's awesome and well designed) -on par-
- Ikaruga, though far from a favourite of mine, is just as stunning looking as Gradius V. -on par-

Well certainly most DC shmups look pale compared to Gradius V, but inho there are 3 to 4 games on par with it at least.evil_ash_xero wrote:P_HAT wrote:Imho, but GV looks bland. yeah, big lasers and explosions... but that's all. Bosses looks... well... like old G bosses in 3d. Awesome![]()

Every one of those games you mentioned look great. Don't forget about Psyvariar 2.Super Laydock wrote:^^ Dame Edna presents ThunderForce VI!

But every one of them still doesn't look as good as GV, in my eyes. I mean, Border Down, Ikaruga, and Under Defeat all have graphics(the backgrounds) done by the same guys. It's just that the PS2 is more powerful, hence they were able to make it look a little prettier.

There's no arguing with taste (while arguing about taste isall well of course).evil_ash_xero wrote:Every one of those games you mentioned look great. Don't forget about Psyvariar 2.Super Laydock wrote:^^ Dame Edna presents ThunderForce VI!

Yes Gradius V looks beautiful in some parts but in my opinion no better than the games I mentioned above.
And yes the PS2 is more powerful than the DC.
In general that is. Some stuff can be done better on DC than PS2 graphics wise though (I am no tech guy so can't explain this in tech terms, but tat last assumption was made on A LOT of tech sources who seem to know their stuff).]

I like how the dude is wearing a Zorro mask, and the audience go "OOOH" during the boss fight.
The Japanese are a strange, yet very talented people.

G.Rev worked on the backgrounds for all the games listed above.evil_ash_xero wrote:But every one of them still doesn't look as good as GV, in my eyes. I think G5 looks better than the games on that list also... not dissing that list but I deffinately see a higher poly count if NOTHING else. But I think it's more than a higher poly count also... more effects to.
I mean when you see a zoom in of the main ship alone in G5 versus BD... there is a big bump in poly count and in texture work.

Yeah, I mean, it's the same type of graphics, but they're just a bit better. It seems pretty obvious to me.Strider77 wrote:I think G5 looks better than the games on that list also... not dissing that list but I deffinately see a higher poly count if NOTHING else. Ikaruga, as nice as it looks, doesn't have any bosses that move about like GV's last boss. It just has more polygons.

Everybody should boycot it if it doesn't. It's just plain ridiculous to not include 480p. All Dreamcast games were 480p 10 freaking years agowhy not ps2? Not a big fan of thunderforce to begin with, but if they include 480p (which should have been standard since the ps2 got realesed but whatever) I'll take a look.Strider77 wrote:LOL... you don't care anything about it if it doesn't?Somebody wake me up if this game has a 480p mode.

I find it stange that shmupping fans are so graphics orientated. I've been playing a lot of Batsugun recently and that game takes some beating. Perfect balance, gameplay and graphics. I'm sure that wasn't 480p!
I have a DC and love playing it through my PC screen. It annoys me that the PS2 doesn't have VGA but that doesn't stop me buying games for it.

It's not about the graphics, just the way they are displayed, with a fuzzy misty haze, which is totally unnecesary.
I'm not going on about the resolution, just the interlaced part that just makes my blood boil.
And yes, 480vga = 480p = dreamcast.
240p, 480p, 720p, 1080p = Great
480i = insulting to humanity, so unnecesary.
