I didn't come into the game expecting twin-analog claw control with super-duper BFG upgrades, and I played the hell out of the original, so I get where the devs (and the original devs) were coming from. In short: It's not the scheme, it's the usage.
The graphics still don't appeal to me. To me the backgrounds (and enemies) are bland and lifeless. Then again, maybe it's the lighting. The color scheme definately doesn't help.
BTW, I think the graphics in Ikaruga are bland as well.
TL;DR - After playing more my thoughts have not changed. It's a faithful remake with a few interesting twists.
I actually think Ikaruga only really starts to shine in the HD version. I have the DC and GC versions(however, I don't have the VGA hook up for my DC, so that may be a problem with the image), but they look alright, but the lack of much color makes the game look slightly bland(especially when compared to RS).
However, I think the reworked(even if slightly so) graphics on the XBLA version makes the game look very attractive, even if it doesn't have a lot of color to it.
BC looks good-ish. It's just lacking detail. And I think the camera pans out way too far. Makes everyone looks like they're out of Elevator Action. Whenever he goes to the Comm rooms, it looks pretty good.
It's good stuff though, don't get me wrong. I like what he says to his "brother"...."there's no one that ugly in my family!". Funny stuff.
