freddie: Fair enough about esp.rade and progear. I don't really mind mahou's randomness since it's randomness that plays on telegraphed preset patterns, it's just annoying against the fourth boss, who can make your score vary up to 200k each loop :(. But you have to admit the scoring system is very simple, and it wouldn't take a long time to get into the game.

Gaijinpunch: Why so serious? :cry:

Rob: You wouldn't play anyways :P

I dont think it's gonna be at all easy to find games..... for SCORING.... that EVERYONE agrees with.

Cave for example.

Yeah, Im a huuuuuuuge fan of Cave; I have everything of theirs that I've so far found any way to get my hands on, and I play them frequently.

That being said,

I usually totally hate Cave's idea of a scoring system. It's all chaining and pure memorization. Aside from Progear, and...... maybe DOJ's Death Label mode, I play these purely for survival challenges, not scoring.

Psikyo too..... I like them alot as well, but their scoring is usually just as idiotic to me, and there are those that just dont like them for some reason.

Much as Im such a huge fan of those two groups, I really dont think their games would necessarily be the best choices for the STGT thing. (Of the two though, Psikyo is the better to pick from, if one needed to be chosen).

Oh, and on the note of week choices, I think we should do a Caravan Week....... yeah, I been into those lately.......

Mike, I'll address some of your points when I come home, since I almost finished writing a post there. :)
-Bridget- wrote:I dont think it's gonna be at all easy to find games..... for SCORING.... that EVERYONE agrees with.
Of course it's not. However, the proposed goal here is not as much about satisfying the majority, as it is about picking games neutral enough to not let the minority feel bad and cause drama about the dumb game choice.
-Bridget- wrote:It's all chaining and pure memorization.
I'm not very fond of those either, that's why I picked the two Cave games most independent from both chaining and memorization. In fact, I'd love to pick Ketsui or DDP 2 for the tourney, but those aren't emulated yet. :(
-Bridget- wrote:Oh, and on the note of week choices, I think we should do a Caravan Week.
Yes, that is a must. Back when we were discussing it in IRC several weeks ago (I distinctly remember sikraiken, P_HAT and a few others participating), caravan week seemed like a no-brainer, and it still does seem a perfect theme.

So far my ideas revolve around these themes:

1) Caravan week;
2) Famous classic week;
3) STGT'07 2nd place week;
4) Doujin week;
5) Famous manic week.

2) Famous classic week;
5) Famous manic week.
The Famous [insert adjective] weeks are broken since they are very open to opinion, or in the case of manic a somewhat bastardized word that nobody has ever agreed on.

I'd like to see non-Cave danmaku week in it's place to be honest.

This sounds pretty much perfect to me. The only problem might be Doujin week, and finding a free, full, legally available to all game that will work on a majority of computers. It's the week I'm potentially most exited about though :)

Well, I just used them more to denote the general selection theme not limited to certain developer or something. I guess "famous" is not required here at all.

As for manic-ness, it will be up for debate. For one, I consider stuff like Garegga and late Psikyo manic, even if there's not much danmaku per se.

Well, since we don't really have that kind of problem with MAME ROMs, why should we have it with doujins? It's not really that different, after all.

Doujin games can be very picky about what systems they work on. You only need to look at all the hoo-ha in the RefleX thread to know this :wink:

Well, I guess some testing will be necessary in that case.

To answer your question moozooh, it's probably because an emulator is generally easier to set up than a personalized program. Find a game, but be reasonable about it and let those who don't have top-notch hardware have a seat. And a caravan week is a good idea.

1. Shock Troopers
2. Koutetsu Yousai STRAHL
3. ESP Ra.De
4. Seirei Senshi Spriggan (Score+Time Attack)
5. Strikers 1945 Plus

That's my list. Yes? No? If you say so...

STRAHL can be counterstopped (not sure how easily though), and by caravan he means time-attack type stuff. ;)

Now that I did not know. Hopefully it's a "Japanese-only" thing. Yes, I know that's harsh...

Seirei Senshi Spriggan is just that.

That's not harsh, it's a garbage remark. The best japanese players are only good because of their time and dedication. They aren't genetically more suited to be good at games.

Why is Shock Troopers on your list, then?

You have a series of complaints about the games that were picked and want leftovers week (and good complaints they were)? I'd rather see Batrider picked again/STGT'06 1st place week.

I'd rather not play Butwider again. That, and Twin Bee Yahoo!, can stay buried for years to come as far as I'm concerned.

It's completely worth it as long as it gets Raiden Fighters Jet on the ballot.

That may be the lamest insult I've seen on the internet, period. You're a disgrace to the forum.

EDIT: That comes off correcter.

Agreed.

I love the danmaku style, but as mentioned above, Cave games and their usual scoring style just wouldnt cut it for a tourney like this.

What other ones might make good choices for that, though, I wonder? Im having trouble thinking of others to suggest..... much of the danmaku styled ones I've played ARE Cave's games......

Either way, that idea for a week theme is a good one.
