I bought a used copy of GTAIV at gamestop a few weeks ago. The game sucks major balls. They have a return anything within a week policy only I got major busy and didn't return it on time. Now I'm stuck with this bullship.

Everything after stage 1 ruined gradius v for me (except Sakimotos soundtrack, of course). Truly the most mundane of all modern shmups.

I had no idea... I thought it was hard enough without it.

what experiences have ruined games for you?
Getting to know the Touhou fandom... I'm just glad I stick to the games.

Speaking more seriously:

The first level of Gradius III in the arcade version. And seeing the final boss only to find out that (apparently) all Gradius final bosses suck bad.

But, seriously, that first level was a nightmare.

gradius 3 as a whole is a nightmare

what other shmup has a mad cow for a boss? quite original I think!

in the short-term, MAME crashing has ruined a lot of games for me.

long-term, over-complicated attacks/defense/special moves, standard shot and maybe a beam shot is enough for me...and a few bombs for the extremely tricky parts. keep it simple!

Medal chaining in Strikers 1999 is alright, same for Gunbird 2. Do not go play Mars Matrix...

Man, you're very right about Gradius V stage 6. The word ridiculous comes to mind.

RSG's last boss is retarded. I get there fairly easily (after countless hours of practice) but then the sh*t hits the fan. Bores the hell out of me. I said it in another thread, but I fell asleep TWICE (!) battling that boss.

i've watched stage 7 and it doesn't look nearly as facepunchingly stupid as 6

plus the music for stage 7 is totally fucking awesome so i wouldn't mind

normally i wouldn't care about a stage being this bad but not even practice mode is helping much on 6 :x

Wading through a long, boring, easy first level to get to the actual fun and challenging stuff usually kills shoot 'em ups for me.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

@orange: Stage 6 is NOTHING compared to stage 7. You'll see when you play it yourself :)

Beating a game only to realize it will cost me a months salary to play the sequel.

No but it has fast sharp turns, lots of speed, Elephant Gear, is long, has lots of gun turrets, and did I mention there's lots of sharp turns you'll have to make.

I rather have to agree on this one, regretfully.

Something about Treasure's style just never agrees with me.....

Gradius V was cool for a short time......

But then I got to the level with the asteroids, and the level with the "liquid". And I have NO idea how in the blazing heck I'd ever get through there WITHOUT a full 4 orbiting options......

And the whole game has that curse where, if you die ONCE, you'll lose your powerups, and not be strong enough to get through the next sections, and just keep dying...... to me, that isnt very good game design. The other Gradius games were never THAT funky about that...... and I've played them all.

If people like this one alot, hey, great, that's fine, but to me it's just overhyped.

Haha, what?

It's the only Gradius game where you can in fact retain your options upon death, not to mention the lack of checkpoints. It's a lot more forgiving than most other games of the series (I'm looking at you, Gradius III), and I've played four of them.

Hmm, maybe it's just me, but I've never found any of the others as damn aggravating as V is...... and that includes the arcade version of 3.

Let me put it this way:

If they lack the asteroid/green-goo/backwards sections to be found in V, then they're fair to me, lol.

Gradius was basically the first shmup series I ever got into, so I've played them rather to death..... I never had TOO much trouble getting back my stuff after a death.

V though? Hah. Maybe it lets me try and re-grab options, but fat lot of good that'll do me.......

Nah, sorry, it's mostly just freaking Treasure.

I've yet to play a shmup from them that I actually liked. Even something like Ikaruga.... bleh.

The green-goo stage is all about safe-spots, with some practices you can easily beat this stage with type-4 option.
