Question about no missing

Post by GrimoreLibrarian »

So I know in most shmups no missing is not dieing. But what about shmups that have a shield system?

In Demolition Gunner there's a power up that adds a shield and once collected two more times the player can take up to two hits without dieing.

So if the player is hit while having a shield, does it still count as a no miss?

It depends on the player (if you're a perfectionist, you probably won't count being hit once or twice as a no-miss even though you didn't lose any lives)... and on the game itself (if it gives you some kind of bonus at the end of the levels even though you were hit, that might count as a no-miss).

At least I think that way.

In my opinion, the only thing that counts as a miss(take) is if your lives are decreased by one.

I would say a no-miss is not getting hit, period. But then the meaning of "miss" is probably "death", I just don't like to think of it that way.

I always thought no-miss just meant no miss.
So you killed everything in the level.

No miss = no death, by definition. If you have shields and lose them but don't lose a ship, it's still a no miss. There are some other terms like, "no damage" for games w/ a health bar.

For one example, Thunder Force IV will still award the "No Miss Bonus" regardless of how many shields you go through, as long as you don't die.

But you will feel better having turned auto-shield/bomb off in a no-miss run, if its possible to change that in options

Not if it doesn't give the extra pointz

Also, the idea of no-damage running through a Gradius with the buzzsaw shield is causing me fits.

I don't get why anyone who tries to do a "no hit"(including shield) in Gradius would even "use"(make) the shield.

The name of the game is no hit. Doesn't mean it's not going to happen.

I think "no miss", in typical videogame quasi-English, is intended to mean "no missing lives compared to those you had at the start"; in end of level bonuses, not missing any target is often called "perfect" (that is, a perfectly effective performance).

In Viper Phase 1 1st Level no-miss does mean no miss and not no death.
I've played that enough to know by now.

Maybe there's no real standard for this ?!?

No-miss = no-death is pretty much the standard. VP1 is just being different.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

"no missing lives compared to those you had at the start";
If you get an extend and die, it is not a "no miss". No miss means you didn't die (at all, regardless of bonus).
