Raiden i and II for MAME?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Are there any working versions of Raiden I and II for MAME?

I have the collection for Playstation and would like to have something to play on my PC. I've never come across a working file though.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

No Raiden DX either. No one can seem to break the encryption. Though I heard something about the MAME team working on it, maybe it was around the turn of the year.

Viper Phase I also works.

Raiden DX seems to run pretty well in pSX (PS1 emulator), if using that program is an option. When I tried Raiden Project in psX and ePSXe it seemed to suffer from jerky scrolling, but I didn't look into any possible fixes.

Think this is an emulation issue, I ran into the same problem myself. The music stutters slightly as well.

On an actual PSX, it runs fine.

Raiden II had a port to PC, if that counts.

I've not tried a recent version, but as of a year or go the Jet series played turdy. Can anyone comment on that?

I think the emulation of the Fighters series was improved not that long ago. They work great, anyways. The only issue is that the sound is still not fully emulated.

I'm pretty certain that the playstation version works fairly well in epsxe, although that would take up way more harddrive space than a couple mame roms.

I play DX in epsxe and it's fine - especially when ramping up the graphic effects on the PC for a less pixilated and smoother experience.

The 411 on Interplay's Raiden II for the PC...

Interplay's Raiden II for the PC came out back in 1999-2000 as a budget PC software title. After buying it and opening it up, it mentions in the instructions that this particular PC CD-Rom is nothing but a port of the existing PSX game of Raiden II taken from the Raiden Project compliation disc.

The only gripe with this USA region Interplay port of Raiden II is that it still has the control issue that plagues the USA PSX version of Raiden II when playing in Tate mode, the controls are still not fixed to this day. Of course, a Gameshark code remedies that tate control issue just fine on the PSX platform but for the PC ver., Raiden II is still unplayable in Tate mode...

As a cool bonus, the Interplay Raiden II CD-Rom disc can be played in a regular music CD player as the BGM tunes are recorded in Redbook format for posterity...one can't do this with the PSX version of Raiden Project anyways. ^_~

You can play it off of the disc in epsxe, you don't have to copy an image to your hard drive.

Then you're doing it wrong.

I thought that was when I got my 30Mil score on Jet...the game sure plays nicely now, anyway.

Control issue on your end maybe? I've had a nice system through all this time.
Hardstepah wrote:doing what wrong? i just dl the roms and play what will play on mame
Audit the ROMs, see if they're failing...or update your MAME...because they do work in the newest MAME.

p.s. MAME > FM Towns, every time (if you have a good system, that is).

I don't know the in's and out's of mame, one computer of mine crashes on some stuff. One computer has newest mame, current roms, and those games all seem to work. I had to try every version of each one, and only one worked of each. These one's seemed to work.

This isn't really related to the topic at hand, but i'll ask it here anyway. Has anyone here played a hack of Raiden 2?

I recently took a trip to Cali and was at the Santa Monica pier (I think that was the name). Anyway, there was an arcade there with a few good shmups. But the Raiden 2 I played had extra enemies in it. For example, in the first level there were these strange BIG tank looking enemies. Also it seemed that the placement of enemies was a bit different as well. There were some extra little tanks placed around. Also, the difficulty was turned down.

Could this perhaps be a china bootleg or something?

actually, it doesnt really need to be the newest mame... RF and VP have been workin (i mean, really playable, since they used to wrok b4, but you couldnt see shit!...) in mame since version 0.98 (or even an older one), which was released like 2 years ago or so... you just need the correct romset and you're all set.

WIP from MAWS:
WIP:

* 0.119u4: Couriersud added to clone Raiden Fighters Jet (US, Single Board) a hack to enable Test-Switch to enter testmode if no nvram exists.
* 0.115: Aaron Giles fixed debug build crashes in clone (US, Single Board).
* 0.114u2: Couriersud fixed NVRAM in clone (US, Single Board).
* 0.112u1: Ville Linde fixed uninitialized use of video_dma_address to address the Raiden Fighters Jet crashed in 64-bit builds.
* 0.93u2: Added clone Raiden Fighters Jet (Japan).
* 0.93: Nicola Salmoria decrypted the graphics in all SPI games. Raiden Fighters Jet is now playable.
* 24th February 2005: Guru - Raiden Fighters Jet (single board version) arrived, purchased by Randy on eBay. Thanks to all that chipped-in for donations.
* 0.88u4: Added clones Raiden Fighters Jet (US) and (ASIAN). Incomplete tile/sprite decryption.
* 8th November 2004: Guru - Raiden Fighters Jet (US version, Seibu 1998) arrived. Thanks to RB!
* 0.88u3: J. Rodman added clone Raiden Fighters Jet (US, Single Board).
* 0.88u2: Added Raiden Fighters Jet (Seibu Kaihatsu 1998). Encrypted gfx.
* 30th October 2004: David Haywood - Raiden Fighters Jet uses a different encryption to both rf and rf2 so it doesn't look too pretty when put in the spi driver for now, I wouldn't really call this WIP since no progress has been made.
* 29th October 2004: Guru - Raiden Fighters Jet (Seibu/Tuning 1998) arrived as a eBay purchases.
Looks like there's been a bit of work on it recently-ish.

Thats mighty interesting. But I don't understand why. Did Seibu put out both versions?

If I ever get back to that arcade I'll be sure to play it again and try to get farther. I only made it to the second stage then went on to play 19xx.

Wait, are you just telling me there is raiden 2 and raiden dx? This def wasn't DX

You have to let the countdown timer reach 0 from 999, I think it displays a message saying that it's done afterwards. The next time you boot up the rom it'll work like normal.
