Definitive R-Type?

Post by airzonk »

Opinion: Which R-Type version, playable on a computer, is the best? I have R-Type Complete for PC Engine.. wondering if I should play that one, or try to find the arcade ROM image... (is it available on the internet somewhere...?)

Shooting up a storm today... I needed a change from RPG/Adventure games, believe me.... :)

Leo!

Seriously though, R-Type II's my personal favorite. Loads of atmosphere and phalli coupled with some excellent graphics make for a great R-Type game, this being the best.

I've actually never played Leo, too bad it wasn't included on R-Types.

If you're asking about versions of the original R-Type, then of course R-Type for MAME!

To paraphrase the WOPR computer from the movie Wargames... "Strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of Dodonpachi?"

I've been playing Donpachi for 2 weeks now.

I think I will start on Dodonpachi sometime in the next few days.

I'm gonna say Delta... it's amazing. R-type 2 is also amazing, takes the original and improves on it heaps. But play through all the R-types you can get your hands on :P You need to experience R-type 1 as well, especially the last boss. (every R-type final boss is an experience not to be missed). I haven't played any of the more obscure R-types however.

I liked R-Type II on the Amiga the best. I know it didn't have the best graphics but it had cool design & better music than the Arcade/SNES versions.
OK I'm a music freak! ;)

It's funny you like the Amiga when your username is "ST" Dragon.

Yeah, how bizarre for an Amiga fan to use the name of an Amiga game. Better call CNN!

If you're asking which is the best version of the first R-Type: R-Types. Better than mame, with tons of nice options like cockpit positioning, stage select, "wait" option and such. And you get R-Type II too!

R-Type SMS has a secret stage you won't find anywhere else.

If your question was, which R-Type game is the best in the whole series... Definitely Delta, but any major installment is worth checking out. R-Type III and Final are good too.

And ST Dragon is right, R-Type II on amiga has much better music than the arcade version.

Nobody can agree on what R-Type is the best one (I'd learn towards 1 or 3, personally) but I'd really, really suggest trying out the original just so you can see where the series came from. It gets a bad rep from some due to the slow pace (as compared to a lot of modern shmups) and the outrageous difficulty... but like it or not, it's one of the most influential shmups ever made. Possibly one of the most influential games ever, period (just look at how much effect it had on late 80s / early 90s games).

None of the R-Type games are really expensive (minus Leo  ) so I wholeheartedly suggest playing as many as possible.

I'd rather go for the non-sucky versions.

PC Engine and PCE CD.
SMS.
R-Types.
and Delta.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

ST Dragon = Saint Dragon

A cool Horizontal Shooter by Jaleco (1989). Released for the Arcades, PCE, C64, Amstrad, Spectrum & the AMIGA.
Gameplay is very similar to R-Type, quite hard & same cheap-ass check points. The 1st level Bull Boss is one of the coolest concepts.
Music of the AMIGA version is again the best of them all. Like in R-Type II.

I enjoyed R-Type LEO better than Delta. I've yet to try Final though.

Here are my favorites:

R-Type Delta (great gameplay and graphics)
R-Type Final (atmosphere, graphics, gameplay)
R-Type (the original)
R-Type II (gameplay not as good as original IMO, but great atmosphere and graphics)

I have R-Type III SNES now but haven't played it yet due to not having an SNES!
make a reaction
memorizing a pattern
must not be shot down

R-Type I & II for the GameBoy are cool aswell. Very good Black & white ports.
I didn't like the DX version, as the colours didn't look very good.

The DX version does have the b/w versions with it, though. The colors look better on a GBC than a GBA, but they simply tiled the colors, which causes some technical problems that aren't in the b/w versions. I wasn't thrilled with how Bits just added color to the games without adding the levels that were missing from the GB versions.

Talking about the original classic, I agree:

R-Types (PSX) is better than arcade. While it seem to have a slightly more pixelated resolution, the "wait control" option easily makes it best of the bunch.

My ranking:

R-Types (PSX)
R-Type (Arcade)
R-Type (PC-Engine) R-Type (Amiga) -while having less colors and some details missing compared to the engine version, it`s smoother and less flickery-
R-Type (Atari ST)
R-Type (SMS)
R-Type (Gameboy)
R-Type (C 64)
R-Type (ZX Spectrum)

Haven`t seen any other version, especially for japanese computers.

meh, I like R-Type 3 but that's the only one I played really.. extensively. Plus it was the first one that introduced me to the series, so maybe I'm a little biased.

My personal favorite is R-Type III; the selectable Forces are awesome, the level design is great, and the remixed music is pretty cool. I recommend it, as well as the first two arcade games. I have't played Leo, so I can't really say anything about it.

PS: Hi Eltrotraw. :D If Asteroids is considered a shmup, then why not Subspace/Continuum, eh?

PPS: I apologize if you're not who I think you are.

Yeah, that's a general reason why I also like R-Type 3.

And when did I say Subspace/Continuum wasn't a shmup..? Besides, I stopped playing that for a while due to other issues popping up.

Oh, sorry. I wasn't trying to imply that you said that anywhere. Just associating you with SS, really. I think some people at this site should try it out.
