What does Ketsui mean ?!?

Post by Michaelm »

To follow tradition on subjects...
I've been wondering what Ketsui stands for ?
When I search on play-asia I get all these idol videos shoved in my face.
So what does it mean ?
All errors are intentional but mistakes could have been made.

中国
There's also Chuukoku which is a region in Japan (the middle, obviously), just to add that patented nonsensical Japaneseness to it.
Peaceful Death
Not really the best translation of a title. It is to die peacefully, after having lived fully. So, it signals the end, but also "going out with a bang".

As far as I know, Daioujou means Peaceful Death. A pun since you don't die in the game peacefully, or something.

No...same kanji as China. Hence, the "confusing" element.

Oh. You can tell I'm nowhere near fluent in reading or writing or understanding Japanese-- I'm only learning right now. =P

Yeah, but that's just an example of a heteronym (2 or more words written the same way but with different pronunciations and meanings) - these can be found in most languages with a writing system, thus not particularly weird or "nonsensical". English has a bunch of them, such as "bass" (the fish) and "bass" (in music), or "wind" (verb) and "wind" (noun).

Technically some single kanji can be heteronyms as they have more than one reading and meaning on their own depending on the context. A good example is 生, which can be read independently as "nama" (raw), or "sei" (life - as in 生を享ける).

Well, the context is very easy to derive from that example... in this case, they are both names of places, with the same kanji... a compound at that which is rarer. The language is notorious for relying on implication, but I've always found this one especially retarded.

I just checked, and this is not a heteronym, as it is pronounced "chuugoku" in both instances, not "chuugoku" in one instance and "chuukoku" in another as you wrote, GP. So it's just a plain homonym.

The difference in meaning between these two is a lot easier to discern using context than something like "kara" in older texts, which could refer to either China or Korea, and sometimes it's nearly impossible to tell which one the author intended.

Yeah, indeed I was wrong. I suck at geography, I admit it.

There's gotta be some weird type of psychological thing behind that.
