I haven't played nearly enough to make such a decision, but if it's not DoDonPachi my favorite Cave game is probably Ketsui (Dangun Feveron could be up there too but it's not very representative of Cave anyways)
It did a lot of things that rubbed me the right way:
- Risk/reward system involving proximity to enemy (try Omega Fighter in MAME for another example of that)
- sucking gobs and gobs of helpful point-boxes towards yourself
- awesome OST with a turbospeed breakheavy TLB theme
- really tough bullet patterns that demand your respect
- exciting even if you only sort of care about scoring

Ketsui is moderately good.
But not the best cave shooter.
What's the point of this thread? Is it worth buying, you ask? The answer is definitely SAVEYOURMONEYFORGUWANGELOL.
Do you want to buy the best cave shooter? Well, definitely focus on something else.
Won't say what, of course, or this thread becomes a napalm rain
Maybe sooner or later someone will discover that I'm probably the only one on this planet who doesn't like DDP. That's why I won't say a thing.

The only reason why this thread is going to be locked is people going ooooh eeeer, it should be locked. Ketsui has a certain alure, that has been built up and maintained by this board. Consequently, we see manifestations of interest in it. Not so hard to understand.
On Topic: I found Ketsui very refreshing. It was a lot easier than DOJ, and the multiplier blocks being absorbed all over the place made for a satisfying game. I can't comment on the oceanic depth that the game obviously boasts, but if I were to get a board, this would be high on my list of considerations. It would still be behind ESPGaluda 2 (which I tried and loved) and Muchi Muchi Pork (which I havn't tried, but long for).
Also, don't forget that Ketsui is getting ported to X360. Even if you have to import a jp console, it's still going to be cheaper than even buying a bare board

Ketsui is so good, it`s frightening, in my opinion*. It makes all else compared (Cave or whatever) seem rubbish, it`s that good.
It`s like the `77 Star Wars, Akira anime, Rodney Mullen or the Audi ur-quattro, everything else before or after seems a bit shite compared. That`s the best I can describe Ketsui as! I would knock one off if Cave did any better in their lifetime. I won`t hold my breath.
Believe the hype.

Lool, yeah I was joking
Given that there are about 8 new shmups released yearly, then surely we only 'need' 8 topics posted on 'shmups chat' a year? Of course not. It's 'shmups chat' not 'shmups news'. Let's relish a chance to once again discuss the merits of one of the STG scenes most famous games!

Re: How good is Ketsui?
it has a major flaw if you're playing for high level scores : it loops.riffbear wrote:Im really interested in this game..

I don't know how bad it is handled compared to dodonpachi, but I'm sure it's fucking annoying at best and handicaps the design everywhere. That won't bother you at all if you're not aiming to play for high level scores, though.
Other than that, having played it a little, I think it's system is kick ass, it looks good and sounds good (except for the boss music which is horrible I think), the patterns are really cool... everything seems perfect to me so far except for the devastating fact that it loops. It needs mushi style modes badly.

I have a feeling that all this hyperbole will suddenly end once the Xbox360 port is readily available.JAPJAC wrote:Ketsui is so good, it`s frightening, in my opinion*. It makes all else compared (Cave or whatever) seem rubbish, it`s that good.

Depends on your opinions of loops. I tend to see them as a concession that the scoring system isn't particularly accomplished, which is clearly not the case for Ketsui. Ketsui Ketsui Ketsui.moozooh wrote:Good thing about Ketsui looping is that there are two different second loops, and both have their scoring system different from the first.

Well, at least it's more original than DonPachiesque "go through all the same stuff, except now it's worse". Basically two scoring systems in one game. Artificial lengthening isn't good, of course, but it's inherent to all looping games — I'm only saying that Ketsui's looping have some benefits compared to others.MX7 wrote:Depends on your opinions of loops. Anyone with a JPN Xbox 360 lookout!Chi_Ryu wrote:It's not a bad game, but I must admit I prefer DDP DOJ (and prefer Progear above both of them!).
Value for money wise it is nowhere near the best, seeing as it *still* costs $1,000 or so.
You might find it more obtainable when the Xbox360 port comes out!

I always thought the point about loops was they rewarded pure, tenacious survival, and were an admission that scoring system was simple. Like in Gradius, you shoot something, it dies, you get points, so the scores of a good player who completed one loop would generally be pretty similar to any other player who 1cc'd the first loop. With a game like Ketsui, there is much less of a standardised 'upper level' of performance.A shit player might be able to give it a flukey 1cc, but a good player would trounce that score from stage one alone. Thus the inclusion of another loop seems a bit illogical.PROMETHEUS wrote:why? that's not what I had in mind at all about what's bad about loopsMX7 wrote:Depends on your opinions of loops.
