Mega Man 8 is beautiful!!...

Post by dave4shmups »

One of the non-shmup games I received for my birthday was the Mega Man Anniversary Collection. Immediately I checked out 8, and it is indeed a gorgeous game! :D I dare say the best-looking Mega Man game I've ever played!

I am working on 3 at the moment, however, because you have to beat 3 to unlock both of the Mega Man Power Battle games. 3 is somewhat familiar to me; it was one of the last NES games I got. I've only beat Top Man for now, and I currently trying to figure out who I should try to beat next.

I really like MM8 as well. The music is by far the best IMO; really soothing yet catchy and appropriate at the same time. If it wasn't for all the bolts you could collect, it'd be my fave MM game. In fact, it still might be, after MM6. No, I'm not one of those people who feel that no originality = bad.

Megaman 8 is pretty...X4 is easily the best looking though (maybe X5 and X6 are better, but I don't really care for either).

For you multi-console owners, the Xbox port of AC is the best, fwiw. It has the extras from both and $10 cheaper.

You should see it in RGB. Absolutely fucking stunning. X4 is, too. This was the first game I tested when I got my PS1/PS2 RGB adapter from Matt. I hear the Saturn version of MM8 looks great, as well, plus it has two extra bosses not in the PS1/MMAC versions.

MegaMan 8 is a fantastic game and I agree that it looks like sex. I like X4 even more and was deeply let down by X6 (and slightly let down by X5).

the Power Battle games aren't all that hot, btw. :(

That won't fix the issue with the jump and shoot buttons being reversed, though, will it?

MM8 = Good game.

First level of Dr. Wiley's castle with the hover-board thingamabob = low point of the game. Seriously, I loved the game until I got to that part. Killed my motivation to finish it.

Personally I think this series died with Mega Man 6. The level design was at its best when MM was a small sprite in a large level. When his sprite got bigger, the platforming got duller and the level designs got more gimmicky.

Yes, I feel the same way about the X series too (though that did have a couple good games... 1, 2, 4 and 5).

Rockman & Forte's still the greatest thing, ever.

I dig the cinemas in MM8.

But not the voice acting. Why does Mega Man have to sound like a doll? The voice of Zatch Bell would fit the character even better.

I definately like 1-8 better then any of the X games I've played, but I'm still picking up the Mega Man X Collection that Capcom is putting out.

Really, the only thing I like better about the X series is the addition of Zero. He's just an awesome character, IMO, and he even got his own game on the GBC! Capcom should do some more in the series that focus on Zero.

Capcom has managed four Zero games in about three years. What more do you want? :P

I loved the music in Megaman 2.

Which reminds me, has anyone played the first 3 megaman games on the Megadrive/Genesis?

Though I don't think it's as good as the original NES versions, I still enjoyed it. I actually prefer the look of megaman in this version than the original version, the graphics on the game overall got a very nice upgrade too.

The sound on the MD version is fucking garbage compared to the originals, which was half the reason to play them in the first place.

Random rant: I really hate how, in MM3-6, they made the weapons-hitting-the-enemies sound effect a lot softer. The crunchy, metal-scraping way it sounded in 1 and 2 was perfect, and they shouldn't have fucked with it. MM5 stands out in this crowd for having an actual explosion SE for all the enemies, which is pretty cool.

The MD version also has those intertial controls where MM doesn't move until you hold the button for a fraction of a second, which is simply horrible.

I like Megaman 1-8, Megaman and Bass, the GB Megamans, Megaman Battle Network 2 and 3, and some of the X games. I actually like the arcade games too.

Personally, I felt that MM8 was a step in the right direction after MM7 - the sprites were too big in MM7, and the control was too rigid. I find myself yelling at the TV when I missed a jump from a platform to a ladder because MM bumped his head on the platform above and I missed it my a millimeter. At least MM8 put things back into a more feasible proportion.

MM7 was also where MM somehow got a tumor in his back and suffered from hunchback-edness... not to mention the music, beyond the tune you hear at the start of the game, is awfully bland.

well i didn't know that the Xbox release, which is cheaper, included the bonuses from both GC and PS2, so i'm getting that now.

also, i never played Mega Man way back so it wouldn't get in my way. before dreamcast i didn't play video games, on accounta i didn't like them. :)

and Arrogant Bastard is back. i have missed your avatar.

I had never played 1-6 on "the real thing" before I got MMAC for 'Cube, either. But I still find the control for them kinda wonky, since when they added separate buttons for turbofire and sliding (:D) they put the turbofire on the Y button, above the fire (), so in order to jump and turbofire you have to either crane one finger over the button or hold the controller in your left hand and put your right hand over the buttons as if the controller was a keyboard, and if you do the latter you can't easily hit Z, which is the subscreen button instead of Start, which would have made much more sense. Also, for MM1-6, you can hit L and R to change weapons a la MM7, and since it's so non-intuitive to hit Z for the menu I end up hitting L and R a lot until I recognize the right palette for the weapon I want, and that's awkward and screws me over when the action is getting heated. Also, I heard that they took out the ending for MM7, but I haven't ever beaten that game so I can't verify, and probably won't anytime soon because they couldn't bother to add the extra turbofire/slide buttons for that game, never mind that the original only used two face buttons like the NES games.

...But I'm getting used to all that. Because I'm not a quitter, and besides, I paid money for this sucker.

On topic: Mega Man 8 would be beautiful if it weren't for the absolutely horrible voice acting. [opinion]I swear, voice acting is the worst thing to happen to video games since the FPS.[/opinion]

Alright, I just finished MM8, and except for that cursed boarding stage in Wiley's castle, the game seems relatively hassle-free. Since the only other MM game I've played to completion is MMX and MM1, which I'm working on now, I have no idea how 8 stacks up in difficulty. Anyone care to list them in some semi-orderly way according to difficulty? Not that it matters....gonna go through sequentially anyway....but yeah......*shrug*

The easiest MM is 8 imo. The hardest one to me was 3. It seemed to have the trickiest jumps and bosses of the series. And it was just a hella long game as well. So here is how I'd rank them:

MM3 - Hardest
MM4
MM5
MM1
MM6
MM2
MM7
MM8 - Easiest

I'd agree with that list for the most part although I think MM4 is tougher than MM3.

I don't know if MM7 belongs down there. The final boss is possibly the toughest of any MM even if everything else is a cakewalk.

I'd probably swap MM5 and MM7 actually. MM5 is incredibly generous on powerups.

I liked seeing Cut Man and Wood Man in Mega Man 8. That was pretty f'ing cool.

But yeah, overall Mega Man 8 is a gorgeous game. Albeit a bit cheesy. "I'm Aqua Man! But you can call me handsome guy!"
