A Real Old School RPG

Just played some of this for the first time in years and years:

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

So does telnet still exist? Can one still get on ISCA?

I liked Golvellius on the master system. Not as old, but old enough, and by Compile no less.

Oh god.. it's playing in my head right now. Thanks a lot. :(

I remember being freaked out when I discovered that everyone else's modem makes the exact same dialing noise.

Damn, I can't believe you guys have never played LORD. It's like, the most epic online RPG ever.

Good game. It's actually older than LORD however!

Not really. Depends on the baud rate and the line quality. The slower modems sound a lot cooler (lower frequencies).

Anyone who is not mildly amused at the very least by Golvellius needs to be shot. I mean fuck, it's Golvellius.

LORD was good, but I was always more of an Usurper or BRE player. They had a little more depth to them.

I was a big BBS whore back in the day. Its how I more or less started gaming.

Word. Usurper and BRE are both great, but they do lack the humor that LORD has.

Does anyone remember that 'kill Barney' game? I think it was primarily installed on Renegade BBSes. Now that was an awesome game.

You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.

On the subject of older RPG games I like the genre before the deep character customization. It was more hassle free when one just had to upgrade to the next sword or armor. Now you tinker with massive maps of hidden tiles raising skills.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Eh, most of the western-made games always had a lot of customization, but the good thing was that you got to play as the character you wanted rather than some character that was already defined.

LORD was just pretty cool in the way it let you advance your character in multiple areas -- the tavern conversation system was really cool, as was the 'flirt with the barwench' option. Most RPGs these days, online included, don't have that level of interaction with NPCs.

Perhaps I counted Dragon Warrior the first. Which would not be really fair.

Can't say I've ever seen that.

Dragon Warrior and Ultima: Exodus on NES were my first RPGs.
